I was born at Caribou City Hospital in 1958 to a local girl and an Air Force Air Policeman and returned in 1983-85 as Electronics Technician on B-52's. My mom (Caribou) and my wife (Caswell) are both from that area. We just visited family there in mid-July 2024 nearby in Caswell and Hamlin (several miles up the Van Buren Road from Limestone). My wife's old house is about one mile from the Canadian Border on the Van Buren Road. I never actually grew up there as Dad's assignments kept us moving around the country (and overseas) until his retirement and we ended up in Pittsburgh, PA (Go Steelers).
I was stationed at the USAF base from 1981 - 1985. It was a very memorable place.

Boring Loring
Spent 3 1/2 years there. I get it.
Could be worse. You could have gotten another Northern Tier base after Loring. Several years later, after coming back from three years in Chateauroux Air Base, France (many fond memories as kid), we were stationed at Kincheloe AFB in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan in 1965-66. It gave Loring more than a run for its money on both cold and sheer amounts of snow (especially being situated between Lake Superior, Lake Michigan, and Lake Huron.). I built lots of snow forts after being stuck indoors in base housing waiting for the snowstorms to subside.
@marks1638 I transferred to Kadena Air Base, Okinawa Island, Japan. I loved being there. Loring wasn't terrible. That was just a nickname for it. I wouldn't mind spending summers in northern Maine. I would go fishing and pick wild blueberries.
