      Zach Bednarek In an emergency I could see it being useful... but I partially heat my house with wood and I don't see how anyone would have that much paper laying around. I go through several ricks every winter, no way I could get that much paper. Plus hardwood logs are more dense and will probably burn longer in a wood stove, which is going to do a way better job of heating than an open fireplace.

    • @tazny3229
      @tazny3229 Před 7 lety +1

      The point is getting paper from logs, then using the paper, then instead of throwing away used paper you no longer want, you turn it into paper logs. Still pretty impractical but definitely not as simple as how you put it.

    • @erkdoc5
      @erkdoc5 Před 7 lety +1

      It's probably mostly for people who have a lot of papers they need to shred and has a wood fireplace. When it's condensed like that it will burn much slower since only the surface which can get oxygen by it will burn. If you throw shredded paper on the fire it will burn quickly, unless you put on so much that it smothers it.

    I had a fireplace in one house and a wood stove in another house. I used rolled up newspaper to make logs which I used in both places. I let the paper soak for about a day or so then rolled the logs; let the logs dry for several weeks or more until dry. They worked very well to keep the fire going and reduce the use of wood logs. Most newspaper ink now is not toxic.

      The EPA says theres no safe minimal limit of airborne toxins like lead that's why people who work with lead for a living have to wear masks with special air filters. you also don't know what all goes into making paper today like bleach to make paper white but the industry doesn't want you to know that.

    • @FlutePlayer777
      @FlutePlayer777 Před 7 lety +11

      That is why you use paper that is in a recycling bin with no plastic and very little writing or ink on it. Today they do not use bleach on the paper. There are other ways to make paper. Anyways if you are going to be paranoid about these things then you might as well live in a bubble. The second you step outside you are already breathing in bad things.

      I hear that, as I've done it when going camping from old newspapers, and using it as my starter logs once my twigs and fat lighter have started to burn, then later on in the night switching over to big log found in the woods around the camp site.

      When my Husband was stationed in Ohio the house we had there had a wood burning furnace I used to roll newspaper into logs and burned them at the same time as the wood. If I was running low on logs I just used the paper logs more and used the wood every few hours. I really like green logs in winter time with the paper logs they would burn slower & last longer. LOL

    These briquet presses are not new, i remember that i saw one as a child in the early 80ies.
    Paper briquets are cheap but most of the paper contains a lot of chemicals. Besides the printing ink there are also optical brighteners and fillers in the paper. These chemicals can not be totally burnt in an oven and so you have some toxic fumes and also some unhealthy residues in the ash.
    Burning paper briquets for heating is not allowed in Germany because of that. The chemicals in combination with moisture can also reduce the life of your chimney. So you probably don't save that much.
    If you are using these logs anyway you should put the ash in the trash can and not onto your home grown vegetables at least. ;-)

So recycling like newpaper and such as firewood would save tons of money.

    After watching this and others yesterday I was inspired to take loose oak and maple leaves off the ground and stuff them in an old metal coffe can, enough to loosly fill about 1 1/2 paper grocery bags. Put a pipe in the middle to make a center hole while packing them in and had a 1 inch hole in the bottom of the can to draw air to the center (like a rocket stove) those darn leaves burned beyond my expectations, as after 2 hours it was still 748 degrees on the grate set above the center on top of the coffe can. Today I want to try the Crazy Hardashow Rooshke's method, but with a flour and isopropyl alcohol slurry to bind them and bypass drying time

Also its more like that when a few Million People always burn Newspapers, the gasses go into the atmosphere and make you sick when you breathe the normal air outside (of course you dont get sick instantly, but after a few years for example...
