- 君が代 - Kimigayo" is the national anthem of Japan. Its lyrics are the oldest among the world's national anthems, and with a length of 11 measures and 32 characters "Kimigayo" is also one of the world's shortest. Its lyrics are from a waka poem written in the Heian period (794-1185), and the current melody was chosen in 1880, replacing an unpopular melody composed eleven years earlier. While the title "Kimigayo" is usually translated as His Imperial Majesty's Reign, no official translation of the title or lyrics has been established in law.
From 1888 to 1945 "Kimigayo" served as the national anthem of the Empire of Japan. When the Empire was dissolved following its surrender at the end of World War II, the State of Japan succeeded it in 1945. This successor state was a parliamentary democracy and the polity therefore changed from a system based on imperial sovereignty to one based on popular sovereignty. Emperor Hirohito was not dethroned, and "Kimigayo" was retained as the de facto national anthem. The passage of the Act on National Flag and Anthem in 1999 recognized it as the official national anthem. - Hudba

I like how they're employing the drumrolls in this version. Makes it sound like waves crashing onto a rocky shore, (seemingly) symbolising the eternity of Japan, withstanding the tide of history.

One of the most unique anthems in the world: it does not boast past glories, nor it promisses a bright future. It is not bloody, nor is heroic.
It is a prayer, with one humble request:
"Let us exist".
It is a fine! Not extravagant nor unnatractive, not warlike! Even boastful sounding!
Just a quite beautiful anthem just celebrating their existence!
I'm not keen on national anthems in the main, they tend to be jingoistic and expansionist, but the Japanese anthem is different -- it is just a timeless love song to the country itself, nothing more. No emperors or military campaigns glorified, quite wonderful.

Lots of people say this anthem is depressing, and it does have a minor tune, but this may be the purest national anthem in the world! A very simple blessing for Japan to exist eternally, made into song. Something like this can only happen when there is a deep love for something, and in this case, it is the deepest and purest love for Japan! May God have mercy on and bless Japan abundantly! Fun fact: the lyrics of Kimigayo is actually comes from a very old poem called "Waka Poem" that was written around during the Heian Period (from the year 794-1185).
If you look at the translation, it sounds like a poem well, thats because the lyrics is from a poem. So you're singing a poem.
Kimigayo was composed by Yoshiisa Oku and Akimori Hayashi (arranged by Franz Eckert, 1880). The first version of Kimigayo was composed by John William Fenton, an Irish with Scottish descent military band leader in Japan. Fenton's tune of Kimigayo gained a little popularity, but it was later scrapped. The later tune of kimigayo (the current tune of Kimigayo that was composed by Yoshiisa Oku and Akimori Hayashi) replaced Fenton's tune of Kimigayo. Fenton was nicknamed by the Japanese as a "Father of Music" because he is the first ever person to (unsuccessfully) compose an anthem for Japan

Therefore, by extension, Emperor Naruhito won't be Emperor Reiwa until he's dead, and Akihito won't be Heisei until he's dead.
Furthermore, it'd be insulting to refer to his majesty as Reiwa as it implies he's dead.
