AirTags have the whole Apple FindMy network, which means that if there’s an iPhone, an iPad, an Apple Watch, a MacBook or anything else around, the AirTag will get pinged by them and appear on your map. Someone made an excellent video about how they operate in a very similar way, but while there might be one Tile product per block, there could be almost 50 Apple products per block, which means you’ll have a much easier time finding an AirTag than a Tile.

This isn't for tracking your phone. Its for tracking other stuff like car keys, wallets, bags etc. For instance, you can put it in a keychain and then can track where your keys are.

The location only updates every 2 minutes in a very iPhone dense area and for me it updates every hour, and doesn’t change the location.
