Best how to video on CZcams, hands down. Your video was to the point with clear instructions, and easy to understand. Stating what size socket to use and the torque specs on each bolt was an awesome added feature. I know your video is about changing the front brakes and rotors but, I used it to help me change the wheel bearing/hub assembly on my son's truck that had completely locked up on him. Very informative and time saving. Thanks.
Thank you🙂 i really appreciate it
Just saved me big time. I took off the wheel and caliper and then realized the rotor wasn't held on by 2 bolts. Great vid.
Thank you🙂 glad to be able to help
Wow General Motors has lost their mind you have to change the wheel bearing to get the Disc Off just nuts
Yea i cant imagine why they would change to this design, what would be the advantage other than being able to ride on the rotor if the wheel falls off lol

getting ready to save myself big dollars on my 2005 Canyon full brake replacement. Going to get pre-painted calipers but now I see I'm going to want to paint the mounting bracket too. Maybe I should pickup those at the junkyard, oh, I mean the recycled car part place. Course I'll have to take them off myself. Going to do the hoses too. Dealer, never go there again, wanted about a thousand bucks, parts and labor, and I already knew I needed to do it and how to do it. You've helped with the torque specs, so thanks. This will be the first new wheel hub design I've done this to. At 75 yo this may be my last DIY brake job, but I've had all the tools for decades and have never paid anyone for this job, and I'm not going to start now.

Great tutorial video with torque specs. I'm about to change the pads and rotors on my nephew's 2006 2wd Colorado, just like yours. Is blue loctite necessary even though the bolts are torqued to specs? Thanks for the video
Thank you:) hope everything goes smooth...blue loctite just keeps the bolts from possibly vibrating loose overtime.

Awesome video with very helpful and informative details. Quick question, what extra steps would I have to take on a 4WD model? I can’t find any videos with a 4WD model.
Thank you🙂..it should be fairly similar..youll need to loosen the axle hub bolt in the middle and just getting to the hub retaining bolts especially the lower one in the back is a lil harder to work with..but a short socket with a swivel should help with the one bolt by the lower ball joint

What size socket did you use for removing to rotor form the bearing?
I just recently bought a Colorado and while doing an in depth check of everything and to get familiar with everything I was looking at the brakes to see what kind of a job it would be to replace them when I need to. I suspected this was the case and would need to remove the hubs. I can say without a doubt this was completely unnecessary on the engineer’s behalf😂. I’ve done brakes on many different vehicles from FWD,RWD,AWD,4X4 foreign and domestic and never in over 30 years have I come across captured rotors on a light duty pickup truck or passenger vehicle. Obviously the Colorado isn’t the only vehicle on the planet with them but it’s proof it’s unnecessarily overkill.😂
Thanks that's what I need to change the brake pads
Thats great🙂👍 thank you
Muchas gracias por todo a mi me Sirve Gracias bendiciones 🥳🙏👍

Great video sir
Thank you for the vid! Ive tried twice now and ive failed both times and just put the old stuff back on. I dont have the tools, skills, or willpower to do this on my own. Maybe ill pay a friend to do it or something.
Good video man..👍😎
welp spent 3 hours doing one side , probably an hour or more tracking down tools . But the guy who owned it previously put an excessive amount of lock lite on . And i got everything undone . And tried lifting it off. Mine was rusted one . Tried hitting it , penitrating oil . I tired everything. Gotta send it to the shop I reckon.
More hitting
I replaced the rotors and pads. Now I have grinding sound wherever I drive. Squeals a lot when braking. Is this wear in or could I have missed something?
Normally that's one of two things..the splash shield behind the rotor is rubbing..or the brake pad retainers probably rubbing..its the two most common reasons why that would happen
Good job
Good and very helpful video u did!! great job! im going to trying do this on mine. Thankyou for the great video. Save a $$$$ doing yourself.
Thank you🙂 i hope everything goes well..good luck..yes u definitely can save a lot of money...thank you for the support🙂
I know some people complain about the design and extra work to get the rotors off.. and I will not disagree with them compared to easier designs.. BUT, are there benefits to this style of rotor?
Since I watched the video 3-5 times and he didn’t mention it. The bolts that he loosened before taking the caliper off are 17mm. I had to hammer them on a bit, use a breaker bar and some Pb spray and they came off with a little bit of force. Just thought it might help because it took me a minute to figure that out.
I didnt? Grr normally i make it a point to mention the sizes i use...thank you for the added tips
@@backyardchevy328 I wasn’t even saying it like the video wasn’t helpful because it very much so is, it’s just I got stuck at that one part. Your video is ver informative and I greatly appreciate you taking the time to explain all you have. Please keep it up!
@@thecommentator5280 thank you🙂 yea i normally make sure to mention the sizes but i was surprised I left it out
@@backyardchevy328 so I got all the way to the part where you’re supposed to take the 4 mounting bolts from the back of the rotor to completely remove it. And I cannot get a socket on any of the bolts, any pointers for that?
@@backyardchevy328 I am using a short socket btw
I'm new to mechanic stuff, do I need to grease my new hub assembly?
No, the wheel hub assembly comes pregreased and sealed
@@backyardchevy328 Thank you, your videos have been a huge help.
I'm currently swapping out to 2009 front brakes as they are larger and it sure is a lot of work vs a floating rotor.
On a 4X4, its a lot trickier for the bottom hub 15 mm bolt. I had to remove the tie rod to make some room... and all bolts are stuck after 14 years on salt roads. Great vid by the way.
Yea i can imagine...usually any job on a 4wheel drive is harder than a 2wd...glad to hear it sounds like u were able to get it done though...thank you🙂
Where is the axel or is that only on 4x4
Did you have to use a puller on the 4x4 to get the hub off? I've removed the axle nut and the 4 bolts in the back and it won't budge
@@DTWCT no.
@@FrenchyCanuck I had to use a puller. 353k on my truck so the hubs were pretty rusted in there. Whailing on the rotor with a hammer didn't budge them
Great video! Thank you so much. One question, is there any major differences for a 4x4 axle? Thanks for your time. Cheers, Bill
Its pretty much the same..its just the axle kinda gets in the way in some angles for loosening or tightening the hub bolts..then u gotta loosen the axle nut...and if really rusty itll make it harder to pull out
@@backyardchevy328 Thank you. I'm getting what I considered very high estimates for a complete break job. Now I'm starting to understand why.
@@BillDaubenmier 😂😂 how much they charging you? Because my estimate was down right outrageous
@@dakotatuck3611 yeah mine too ~$900 and said it could go higher if there are any problems. They did say I have about 20% left on the front breaks, so I'm just continuing to drive it. I may trade up for something newer soon.
@@BillDaubenmier yea them mfs was trying to charge me a couple grand😂😂
What do you do if you've replaced the switch, replaced the bulbs, and the brake lights still don't come on?
Probably a good time to replace the front shocks too if needed
Good
Thank you🙂
Why do you need to remove the entire hub to get the rotor off? Can’t the rotor be removed by simply loosening the rotor bolts?
How do you 'wiggle the hub free'?
Mine doesnt move AT ALL! :(
And yes, have all the bolt out. I've spray some penetrating oil and tapped the rotor with a hammer, but the hub has yet to move.
Mine just came off as it did on the video, but i know rust can affect things worse if u live in snowy regions, Its not 4 wheel drive either?..if u soaked it in penetrating spray and spray through the back of hub..i would turn the wheel all the way one side and maybe tap on it from behind...worst case u can get longer bolts thread em in..and tap on em back and forth it should free up that way
@@backyardchevy328 About 1/2 hour of soaking and more aggressive use of the mini-sledge did the trick/
@@mikemojc sucks that it took so much work...but im glad u got it off
I'm in the same boat. Hub won't budge. Thinking it's rust with 353k on the truck
Please somebody say the name and number of the socket to remove the roters
So I had to do rotors and one hole hub but now abs light is on anyone know why
What's the size on the hub bolts?
17mm socket
Now how in the world did that hub come off so easily?
I Got lucky that it wasn't so rusty
So do you remove the cv axle??????????
Only if its a 4wheel drive model..but mine was a 2 wheel drive model

Im sorry to hear that...i hope ur able to get it off..good luck
I've never known of Chevrolet making things so complicated. I wonder why the engineers didn't make it so you could take the rotors off the front instead of the rear.
I actually love this design. It's more work to replace, but from an engineering perspective it's more efficient and safer. More points of contact for the brake rotor. Shorter studs meaning less torque on the hub it's self. Also separating the studs from the brake rotor means no rapid change in force direction. You can also build (gm does) a more robust mount for the rotor while also losing rotor weight. The rotor is also more robust seeing as it's contact with the hub is more direct. (not a curve like on typical brake rotors). The gains aren't huge, but still more safe and efficient.
Yes, u do make very good points
If I knew the steps to change rotors on these, I would’ve never bought one
Same as 09 you think?
Yes, theyll be the same procedure as long as its the 6 lug design

You forgot to show the part where you have to use a press or beat the hub out
Well luckily ours wasnt too bad but yea depending how bad the rust is, u might have to get some good hits to free it
81 ft pound? For hub to rotor? IM SO CONFUSED! Haynes says 15 ft pound. But I had to beat the damn things off with a sledgehammer.
I’m in the exact same position
Where is your axel ?
The one in video is a 2wd model...u might have a 4wd model if u got a axle in the front

Why don't you take the rotor bolts loose if you're going to remove the hub assembly and replace it.... That's more work dude. Work like a fox not like a knocks work smarter not harder
And what about the boot? Totally skipped that part bud
Why did gm have to do it this way?!
