ICED IN: Paddling Frozen Lake - Winter Camping Trip in Canadian Wilderness

  • Welcome back to our channel!
    I wanted to squeeze one more canoe trip into this season and we did just in the nick of time! We set up a home base with our tentipi and enjoyed the beautiful Canadian winter wilderness for a few days. We kept a close eye on the water to make sure we were not getting frozen in and left a day early when we woke up to the entire lake freezing over. Mother Nature is always in control and we were at her mercy! Breaking through ice to get home was a cool experience but our paddles took a beating. We also had some spectators filming us breaking through once we got back to civilization. They could hear us coming from mile a way and said we were crazy. Are we crazy?! That's okay with us :)
    Safe to say this will be our last canoe trip of the season! Let us know what you would like to see from us in the off season!
    Love,

    I can't tell you how much I've been enjoying your videos! I've watched them multiple times and I can't say that about the other channels I watch! They're so beautiful and peaceful. But this one definitely had some drama! I was feeling nervous for you as you broke through the ice in your canoe. It made me wonder if you ever did get stuck, and what you would do if you did? Thanks so much for sharing!

      thats so nice to hear, thank you! I was pretty confident we wouldn't get stuck.. the ice wasn't that thick. But we did pack extra food just in case and picked a campsite that if we had to, we could hike back to our vehicle if we really had to.

    That was pretty awesome! I bet one more day and you would have had a real problem! That wood stove... how much does it weigh? And how long before you're trying to pack it up do you need to have the fire completely out (so that it's not too hot to handle)?

    • @TheTimberLife
      @TheTimberLife  Před 3 lety

      It’s about 18 lbs.. not light. The length of time it takes to cool down really depends on how big of a fire you get going in there.. but that’s why we had a campfire the last morning so that we could pack it up quickly. :)

    Great vid but Scary!! I THINK in Ontario now if you have to be rescued from being stranded by your own negligence (no offence love you guys!) they make you pay for it and its not cheap. Heard of a few guys got blown out into lake Erie on a piece of ice and had to be rescued and they charged them for it i remember it was a hefty cost!!

    • @TheTimberLife
      @TheTimberLife  Před 3 lety +1

      Yes I think your right about the hefty price tag... we chose a campsite that if we did get stuck we could have hiked out and had extra food packed if that would have happened. I'm pretty frugal.. it would have had to be serious for me to call in help! Now that would have been a good video haha.

      If you watch previous videos, they are obviously experienced outdoorsmen.. anyone with experience is prepared for the worst , remains calm when the unexpected happens, and has a back up plan. I’m sure they had one. I’ve duck hunted a hundred times surrounded by ice and having to break through it. When your experienced you just figure it out. There’s always a way , and besides, experiencing the unexpected is half the adventure! Those who are afraid of adventure sit in the couch and watch youtubers do it.

    • @JohnHMoore
      @JohnHMoore Před 3 lety

      @@FrankLadd yeah, I was thinking more about this... making fire onshore only helps if one of them doesn't fall in the water and can help the other rapidly. If both fall in the water... not good. Sticking closer to shore might help (though thicker ice there). Wearing drysuits or even wetsuits might be a good idea. Though I do believe that the odds of them dunking themselves are lower than average...
