    Hey there! This one was a lot of fun to make! Ever since the lawn mower video I've been wanting to do this, and I've been working on it all week. Thank you for those of you who support us on Patreon! You bring stability to my family's life. My goal is to be a light during this time. www.patreon.com/smartereveryday
    I know the world is a bit crazy at the moment. I wish you and your family peace and love. Spread the love and help others where you can. Look for the positive stories of people coming together in unity and try to amplify them.
    There's a lot of disinformation at the moment so if you recall what we learned together in the social media disinformation series, think twice before you share something!
    Warm Regards,
    Destin

      @@BoozhiOfficial slomo sound is recorded and produced separately. If the original audio was slowed down at the same scale of the video then the pitch would be below our audible range several times over.
      What he possibly did was record a few things like swinging the plastic cord slowly, shaking a chain link fence, hitting vegetables, etc... slowed them down and pitched them down slightly and then added a lot of reverb.

    I was wondering if you can please make a video where you're analyzing the physics of a scythe compared to a weed eater. My grandpa taught me how to scythe, and while the learning curve is very tough, the efficiency and speed of a scythe is way better than a weed eater. I was just wondering how it looks from a physicist's point of view.

    Destin, could you do a tension-elongation test to see how much this material stretches before it shows a plastic deformation and until what point it will show an elastic deformation. With this info, the rotations per minute you could calculate the angle at which the plastic string is being pulled and calculate the forces that apply to the string.
    Furthermore you could measure the time it takes the strong to rotate around the fence, where it can be seen as immobile. With the rpm of the weed eater you can also calculate the elongation of the string.
    Basically with the phantom you've built a visual tension-elongation measurement device.
    Shear forces should apply in that case. You've basically got 2 points of failure at least: 1 the impact weakens the plastic string. If the string isn't being broken by the impact, the smallest diameter of the plastic string no carries the weight of the weeed eater pull. After lowering the diameter, tension with a sheer force is being built up until the elastic deformation changes into a plastic deformation which leads to material failure.
    Another potential weakening of the string lies in the fact that the string is curled up and therefore shows inner tensions. As we know, inner tensions do get released when heat is applied. This heat is created upon impact with the fence. Basically you use the impact of the string to straighten it out a little and release some of the material tension.
    There are so many more things I have on my mind right now but due to me being German, it is hard to explain everything on my smartphone in a CZcams comment.
    Greetings from a German mechanical (Diplom-) engineer in the field of material science, compound technology and damage analysis.
    If you want a super interesting topic, I can hit you up with a machine that I've built that replaces a multi-million dollar machine with something that can be self made for 50 bucks. It's for measuring the surface tension of EVERY surface or surface coating. 😁

    Awesome video!
    I just had an idea while checking out some knives online. It would be awesome if you could make a video similar to this comparing different knife sharpening techniques (wet stone, pull through, honing steel, etc) with some close-ups of the knife blades after sharpening to help settle the debacle around pull-through sharpeners causing damage to knives and which steels chip more often, are harder to sharpen, etc

      @Science Matters --- Oh, yes! I can't believe six months has gone by since your comment and no one has chimed in.
      I have mixed feelings on knife sharpening (can never get mine very sharp) and would love to know more about the 'nuts and bolts' of the process!

    • @lunchworm
      @lunchworm Před 3 lety +4

      Vinny they can’t record in slow motion so it’s essentially foley artists making sound effects for it.

      I noticed that as well, after seeing other videos on how they make the sounds for slow mo videos, I’m always extra appreciative of nice sounds for these clips because I know someone spent time making it that way, not a by product of slowing down the footage. Awesome!

      The guy who does Destin's slow-mo sound effects is a music artist name is A Shell in the Pit; he did the soundtrack for the game Rogue Legacy. Check out his bandcamp page-I've loved his work since hearing his song Trilobyte. Destin's also got two videos where the guy is showcased and they talk about his process of figuring out "psychoacoustics", which is about how people expect, perceive, and experience sounds.

      Why dont they just make a miliinch?

    • @math0rt0n
      @math0rt0n Před 3 lety +19

      its funny, even as an american I hear about thousands of an inch, and it feels like some arbitrary measurement that I can't scale in my mind to other things outside of that sample. But if I hear the measurement in millimetres I have no problems.
      I definitely prefer metric but the hurdle that america would struggle with more than any other is switching from measuring distance in miles to kilometres the average Joe has no idea of the "feel" of traveling in kilometres because the only time they would have to understand it (outside of hiking) is when talking to a foreigner.
