I have done this job before on my v70. A little tip is to put Vaseline on all the clips on the surround, it makes it easier to get it off next time without breaking them.
I just repaired mine.... tried just spraying some penetrant in from the outside- no go. So, ended up yanking it All apart, and fixed it Without the new part. (Save $150-). Mine was rusted as they all are, but Much worse than the one here. In fact if you opened the hatch you had to use a tool to pry it back.. which got just a Little old after oh, 3yrs. So I just went at it hard-core with the penetrant moving it back-n-forth different angles, then after it started to free a little (like a half our later!), I dripped in some gear oil and continued. Believe it or not I got to become TOTALLY free, just flopping around. Big Yay. Then, over the rusty ends I placed a dab of heavy grease and called it good. Yes you must remove the license plate frame, but mine wasn't in bad shape; a perfect time to clean it up so it doesn't become like the one here. All-in-all, Way more time than i planned to spend, but fixed, works perfectly, no cost, and the license plate frame is new again 👌 For those that go do this to theirs... (didn't hear it in the video) there are Four 10mm nuts that hold the handle in, and a couple of really minor tabs. Pull off the entire carpet/molding, and you will find those 4 nuts to remove and then the license plate frame, and you're golden 👍 ~
Step one can only be done if you can open the tailgate, if you can't, then forget step 1 2 3 and all the other steps until you get the door opened. On the 2009 I had to cut a square hole on the inside of the tailgate to expose the lock and then poke, push, prod everything inside the lock to try and open it. Suffice to say, I was successful after several hours, several attempts and then it was a total fluke, by accident, it opened and I have no clue what I did or what I poked to open it. I had to remove the inside tailgate cover, (what was left of it), replace it as well as the tail gate lock after I removed the tailgate license plate and exposed the lock from the outside. Yes, you guessed it, had to cut another square hole with my angle grinder and cut off disk. Close to 2000 for replacement parts, shipping and tax. So grand to own a volvo you can't manually open.
The problem I'm currently having with my 2010 V70. I ordered the new part, 30699743, online, provided my VIN, and relayed that my car has a manual tailgate, not powered. Got the part in and took the car to the local Volvo dealer Tuesday and was told the connector was different on the new part. Did a little more research and found all the different Volvo sellers online list 30699743 as being the correct part for my VIN but it's for a powered tailgate. No listing for a manual tailgate. I did find some mention that part #31253018 is the correct part but is listed as for the older XC90. Looking at this video I see there are more wires in the replacement piece, which I assume are for the powered lift, as mine has only the blue and red wires. So I'm going to ask the Volvo Technician to remove the connector off my old latch and connect just the red and blue wires on the new piece and see if it works. That will save me time at the dealership, doing a return, and buying another latch. We'll see how that goes.

I have a latch stuck closed. I tried to get in from inside of car, but can't see what area on latch to move. Not enough light to see things, I saw one video with a metal tool to hook inside right side of latch. No idea where the tool comes from.
Well that’s annoying. Is the outside latch in full-closed position? You might have some success yanking hard on it to open. May be that something got stuck in the catch.
@@Bigtime_mcalpine Nope, it won't budge. Hoping it isn't just a piece of rubber from the seal that goes along bottom edge. The handle and the metal rod on outside of car is rusted too. I sent email to Volvo parts place in Ontario. He said they don't sell the tool to get the locking mechanism to open. I saw another video with the tool needed. It looks like a funky coat hanger. It needs to fit into the hole on right side to release it. Guess I am stuck taking to a repair shop with tool....
@@kumack67 you may want to think about whether it makes more sense to cut a strategically placed hole on inside panel near where latch is. Getting another panel from wreckyard would be pretty cheap.

I had similar problem......did put planty of Brunox spray for locks and stuff, handle started to work fine.
