JLY-Autism harnesses the power of film to connect and create empathy in others in an unprecedented way. The film's documentary techniques capture the real life stories of 3 children and their best friends/sibling. They explain their lives with autism in relatable everyday scenes. The kids and former NFL quarterback, Trent Green, explain sensitivities, behaviors and model how to be a good friend to someone living with autism. Ever since my childs autism diagnosis I've had a lump in my throat but after watching this i feel so much better
They played this at my kid's school. It really helped my son's class interact with him better. This video should be played at every school.
I agree. Depends on what school though. Jr. High and High School should be watching these. Those schools are more likely to have more bullying there

I always use the term "autistic," as opposed to "with autism," to describe myself, but I will respect whatever you prefer to be called.

Some people with autism prefers autistic, because they refer is a condition will be get along with them for the rest of their lives,like it is not optional, is part of their life…I wonder now what is better
@@dariusanderson9343 Yes, loads of people with disabilities prefer identity-first language rather than person-first, for example the deaf and blind communities, why is autism different? Person first implies that the person and the autism can be treated as seperate, and most autistic people think that it can't be -it's an intrinsic part of who we are, not something that can be easily seperated from them as a person. Also, not all autistic people view it as a negative thing or a disorder, just a different way of being. Look up the social model of disability some time.
@@robokill387 All the more reason to agree to accept whatever language a person uses to SELF identify. It is their choice and ultimately it is all good. A little history on civil rights movements. I am 70 and when I was a girl we were called Negro or Colored. In the 1960s my people knew we all had to self identify. After much discussion in the civil rights movement we realized that it was counterproductive to debate those who preferred the title Black as opposed to those who wanted to use African American. A lot of time was wasted arguing over the semantics of those terms, time and effort that could have been better spent fighting society for full inclusion for our people. There is a lot of important battles ahead for the population of people on the spectrum. Full inclusion in education, supportive safe housing, a full voice in one's life's decision making.... respect however individuals SELF IDENTIFY!
It warms my heart to see so many people on the spectrum saying how much this video meant to them, myself included. My lifelong dream is to promote mainstream acceptance of people like myself on the spectrum, and undo the damage that people like "autism speaks" have done
This is really touching, especially for me, because I have Aspergers Syndrome. Obviously Aspies are more high functioning than the majority of kids with Autism; but I feel like us Aspies can relate to this video as well. I like to think of Autism as a super power. It makes us unique, kind, and smart in unexpected ways. Yeah we may stumble with reading social cues. So? And sarcasm flies over our heads. You got a problem with that? We are just like you, except we have more uniqueness than you and we get more hate from people because of it. I love myself for who I am , and even with the social struggles of going through HighSchool with Autism, I wouldn't trade my disability for anything. Long live Autism!!!
+Thomas Assael I agree with you, and feel the same. I have classic autism, but quite high functioning, and an IQ of 160. I don't mind the things I'm not good at, because I don't think those things are very important. For example I can't communicate over the phone, so what, we have email. I am very good at certain things that other people are not so good at. And I'm very happy with those things. :)
I agree with everything that both of you said and there's only ONE thing I hate about my asperges and it isn't anything social I just hate it when people call me "disabled" or that I have a "syndrome" I know that they are the scientific names for them but when I hear those words people don't think of autism they think of much worse disability's so I just think it's a bit to the extreme.

Im a adult with aspergers glad you are not trying to make us seem like a demon yes i cant drive and cant work because the stress but im a 35 year old single dad people need to understand we are not monsters

I have autism myself. I'm impaired verbally, socially, and behaviorally. As a result, I stutter more often and I often take longer to get my words out so typing or writing really helps me explain what I'm feeling or what I'm saying. I can't always read social cues and sarcasm so I feel like an outcast but I love hanging with people but it's hard for me because I struggle with social skills. I have behavioral impairments which means I get angry, sad, or overwhelmed very easy. I also stem more inappropriately, these stemming include; rocking, jumping, tightening my muscles, and talking to myself. I don't want to do any of this but I do it to go through the situation or something. I view the world differently but go through the same problems. Autism isn't my only condition, I also have learning disabilities so I have trouble reading and writing. My accommodations for those is, I get extra help and I have resource classes so I can learn differently. I'm just like everyone else but different.

Yah really ahhh autism is hard
This made me cry so much. I didn't get diagnosed with high functioning autism until I was 18 years old. It made so much sense when I got diagnosed this way. I went through all of my public school life, with no help, counseling, or anything. I thought I was just weird. It's so important to get diagnosed at a young age, so please, don't be afraid to ask if you yourself have high functioning autism.
As myself who has Autism. I feel like it's hard to live with/and it effects on how I live. I don't understand a lot of things with education/ or with socializing with peers and with acquaintances. When each day goes by it's a challenge. I hope I die at a young age(twenties-thirties/19 years old) so I don't have to go through those trials.

What I didn't like is that Christian's mother forcing him to talk when he has a whole mind of his own. He needs to be taught how to use a letter board and a key board.
Amen! What she was doing was facilitated communication, which has been debunked and can sometimes be dangerous (as in legal proceedings). Non verbal autistic people can communicate on their own with no one guiding their hands: they just need to be taught alternate methods of communication.
I have mild (Aspergers Syndrome) Autism and ADHD. My symptoms never stopped me from what I wanted to do in life. I watched this documentary, some of the things mentioned in the video can relate to me. On how I feel, see things visually, different textures, and many other things. Getting back to the part of, "it never stopped me". I have become an, Hockey announcer and DJ for all of the games I do. In 2013 my calling came to me. The Geauga Maple Leafs Bantam AA hockey team was where it all started. Coach Magnasco was thrilled to have me, Mrs. Kendra guided me on the players names to announce. That same year with the help of me and having a great team we won the 2013-2014 CSHL Bantam AA Championship. The Leafs also gave me my first job opportunity. In the Spring of 2014 I started working for hockeytime productions. I work hockey tournaments for the company. I announce and play the music, while running the scoreboard and keeping score. In the fall of 2014 I picked up new hockey teams to work with. I came across the Cleveland Sharks coached by Adam Rich. Prior to finding the sharks I found the Cleveland Jr Lumberjacks AAA hockey organization. The first Jacks team I picked was the 2002 team Coached by Doren, Trobenter, and Houston. Shortly after that I picked up the 2000, 2001, 2003, and 2004 Jr Jacks teams. The 2002 Jr Jacks went to Toledo OH in the Spring of 2015. The team played in the USA Hockey Mid-Am District Tournament. I was there with them as we skated our way to become the, 14-15 2002 AAA District Champions. the 2002 team finished tier 1 season ranked 18th at 37-15-10. After the season has ended, my work for the 2015-2016 hockey season begins. In the Fall of 2015 came the largest amount of teams to work with, out of my entire announcing career. I work for ALL 8 Jr Jacks AAA teams, Gilmour Gladiators Youth Hockey, Chagrin Falls High School Hockey, and Strongsville High School Hockey. To this day I am hoping to land a job with a Pro Sports team. Until then I am happy where I am and with the teams I am working with. Lastly Autism never stopped me as you can see above. If you have autism don't let it stop you from doing the things you want to do. I want to thank my mom for helping me along the way with my Autism and ADHD.

At age 16 I was diagnosed with autism but this year I learnt to accept it. I’m 25 years old live by myself learning to drive, plenty of friends. I’m starting up a CZcams channel myself I do let plays, how to Mac & iPhone videos, documentaries, Vlogs and other geek related content
I have high functioning autism, after watching this in class, I got to further explain autism to the entire class.

I get so dismissive so times and feel as if no one understands me or can help me (I have Aspergers Syndrome) but when I see this kind of thing it makes me feel better. There are people out there who understand, I need to remind myself of that every day.

My best friend, Addi, was in this video! And I had no idea that her brother had autism, but I know not to blame him for what he's like, because he was just born that way. I don't believe that anyone should blame people who have disabilities for their problems, they were just born or had developed it. Its not their fault.
But, this video tells me more about my friends brother and more about autism, and it helps me understand what autism is better! Thanks for posting this great video for people to watch and learn (maybe from their mistakes)! Good job!

This is over all ok but I really don't like the start, mostly because I am Autistic, I use Identity first because Autism IS part of me and not something i need to to seperate from myself it is part of me it effects all of my life and thats ok! I am Autistic and I am proud to be who I am

I'm glad you feel confident about yourself. I wish I felt the same but I don't. When I was in school labels already existed. I was labeled and put in a box. I didn't have any friends in Jr. High or High School but my classmates knew who I was. I guess that's a good thing. Sometimes its hard to separate myself from my disability. I see myself defined by it. Even typical people do.
That and the way the boy with the word pad doesn’t look like he’s interacting so much as the assistant is through him. I would have preferred more moments where he interacted or talked in a manner that was unscripted. So I like the opening but those two things make me uncomfortable.
That being said, so close. It’s nice to see representation getting better. :)

I think what they mean is that autism isn’t the only thing you are. Like it’s part of your personality but it’s not the only part.

My child with autism is away from me these days. I so feel like hugging him loads and miss him so much :'(
Wow this is a great documentary, I have three siblings with Autism and a lot of these things are things my siblings deal with, and I even learned a few things too! I’m still learning, even though I’ve lived aware of Autism all my life. I think this would be a great resource for me to show to others, so thank you :) this made me feel like my family is understood, which makes me so happy. I live in hope of a future with more awareness and love for people with abilities. I loved how you included some famous people believed to have had Autism, it helps show people the amazing things those who have it can do.
I been reading books of old, the legends and the myths! Achilles had his gold, Hercules and his gifts! Spider-Man's control, and Batman with his fists! But clearly I don't see myself upon that list!
I was so glad this was the 1st video I watched after my 6 yr old was diagnosed on the Autism Spectrum. I'll admit it balled through it . He is high functioning but has many triggers that were discussed ! Thankful in TN !

It hurts to have a brother that in all of his 9 years hasn't ever spoke to me , yet we have the strongest connection. ELECTRIC CONNECTION. Now I have a better understanding of the reality. It's like afterlife, we're curious about it but will never really know how it feels. It's crazy how someone with no voice speak so loud and bright.

This has really touch me .... I had a kid and we recently discovered that he has Autism. There's so many things I still don't know, so many things Im beginning to understand he's behaving and his reactions. Understand more about this, he can get super hipper, sometimes I might not have patience, he might not understand my mood or even my face expression when I'm mad.... now I know. That's the reason he repeats sometimes when I'm getting mad for something that he's doing. He can be different on public sometimes, not so much. But all I can know that I get 1000000 hugs daily ... 1000000" kisses and I have the kid with the biggest heart and the most kindness. So I'm learning from him too, understanding more about how he sees things and why he do it. Why he always need to carry something on his hands, walk on his toes. I'm learning learning even more day by day. I really hope he meets a good friends at school just like this kids to help him over ♥️.

I never think anything even in class I do my math by explaining TO MYSELF and TALKING TO MYSELF AS IF I WAS A 2ND PERSON. Im Reading as I type. Don't talk to me on different tones.
I have classic autism and I always used to feel very lonely. I never really met people who were like me, or on the same 'frequency' how I always call it. But I'm doing better now. Working a lot on my art, and I'm giving presentations about my autism, and making videos. And now my network is a bit bigger. I'm still quite different than people in my network (which is more work related also), but I do feel appreciated and welcome.

A boy in kindergarten at my school has autism. I had to watch this and other vids by "just like you" for a school project about how we are all different.
I got HF autism, and I enjoy it. However, I don’t enjoy fearing awkwardness. I go out of my way to avoid it. My thought process is very dirty and filthy,. Literally, I can see dirty mindedness in almost everything, I enjoy it. I’m also practically immune to epileptic images, eyestrain art, etc.
In a nutshell, my autism doesn’t affect my senses.
Only my social skills. I don’t really talk a lot in school, since i fear getting in trouble for embracing my extreme dirty sense of humor.
It's good to have other people understand how it is for us.
Both me and my partner have high functioning autism and I wouldn't want her to be any different than she is because she's perfect how she is. I'm thankful to have her in my life and I'm more than thankful for her every single day.

I have ASD, formerly known as Asperger's. So, I understand the problems those with ASD go through.
I have ASD under what was known as Asperger's Syndrome. I understood what the video was trying to tell me at times more than others. Yes, the processing part was very on point. I hear everything and enjoy being quiet or just chilling with friends in a room. Sure, I can get loud and hyper like a lot of people but the one thing I love most? Finding other people who are on the spectrum who understand what you deal with daily. I have been called weird for my sensitivities and truthfully, I think I have gotten used to it in some cases. I understand sarcasm to an extent but have been told that the way I come across can be rude or demeaning and honestly, I don't intend that behavior at all. I have noise and light sensitivities which makes it very difficult some times to process things the way you or someone else may. These things may make me get loud so as to fight against the noise or some times even ignore you. I do the latter just so I don't always have to be engaged in conversations. I am learning how to be independent and monitor my own actions and behaviors. I am no longer a child but I know that I will always be that in my parents's eyes. It has gained me friends and lost me friends but at the end of the day, those that stuck by me ended up with more loyalty and friendship than those that left. I try and understand my friends who aren't always able to communicate with me the same way as I am able to. I learn visually and it has always helped. If I am struggling, give me time and some patience to get my thoughts and words in order to communicate what I feel I need to say to you or come up with some sort of code/language that you and I share. I know it has helped me in uncertain situations. I am always there for my friends and am willing to try again if the situation reappears. The more you are willing to fight with me, the more I am willing to do the same. Thank you for showing us what it feels like, what you see and how it effects you. You all are beautiful people and you are all valid.

This makes me cry because I had it my whole life but didn't get told till I was 19. Nobody really talked about it around me. People didn't help me get the help I needed in the right way in school because they didn't know why I did what I did because I didn't understand myself either so I wasn't able to explain myself about who I am. I can sometimes speak normal but most the time speak in baby language because it feel safe and it's one of the only ways I understand how to sound out and speak 99.8% of the time. I have to be quiet a lot around my family because they don't like the way I say things because they don't believe it's me. I stay in my room most the time around them since I don't want to be judged by them even though we love each other. They also don't like what I wear. I wear emo stuff and baby stuff because it makes me feel safe but my parents say you can't wear that, even though it makes me feel safe. I still try to cope with life but am so glad I have a few friends and a loyal autistic husband who help me threw my life. I love who I am.
This is just sad to see people make fun of them for no reason
The worst is not being to trust those your supposed to care about and having thoughts of doing them wrong in return. It becomes like an addiction. Once you hit adulthood you have an ego that cannot seem to be deflated and Darwin's theory is your handbook. That's why I gotta say this virus has been a blessing upon us to condemn those who make a mockery and fill our families with contempt and deciet.
And then you stop and wonder why?

El hijo de mi pareja tiene asperger. Desde el primer día siento que lo entiendo. De hecho detesto como la madre lo declaró discapacitado para que el estado le de plata en lugar de confiar en las capacidades de su hijo y salir a trabajar como cualquier madre. Los respeto mucho, de verdad. Y a mi divino hijastro lo adoro con el corazón, es inteligente, dulce, tierno y muy mimoso conmigo.

This helped me understand my daughter better. Newly DX at 11.....dont know how the doctors and therapists missed this DX but I knew it was more than just "ADD"
Loud sounds and people talking at one time is annoying. I like music. I sometimes wear noise cancelling headphones. Other times I just wear music headphones. I hate many different smells. I could vomit. Some food could send me into meltdown. I hate tags and polyester. I can't stand to be touched lightly. Bear hugs are ok and weighted compression cooling vests are excellent. Amusement parks are a nightmare. Then I have a meltdown in public and that is embarrassing. I don't understand jokes or sarcasm. I prefer to use ASL rather than speech. I prefer to be alone. Social skills classes don't help me much I don't think. I do have a few great friends though and a great teacher. I don't get invited to parties and stuff though and I hate getting compliments. I hear the r word a lot.

I cried my eyes out personally after watching this, and have shared it with several of my friends and colleagues. I myself have autism, so I am always searching for new resources to better help my friends and colleagues as well as my family understand me and others like me. This film put tears on my face

I have aspergers + adhd, so far i'm pretty lonely, getting no love nor positive attention such as a simple hug. Kinda feel like i'll be doomed to stay alone the rest of my life no matter what i try.

1980Shadowwolf Got the same feeling dude. Always you are being told that for everyone there is a partner, yet they don't calculate in what hard life's people with Asperger's have. I am 33 now and not a single woman even wishes to try it with me, no fair chances for a person with Asperger's. This all because "normal" people can't seem to figure out how to be actually 'normal' around someone with Asperger's. Unfortunately this will never change as well, people are just too stupid and stubborn to change their bad behaviors. Which on turn will just push us Aspy's further to the edge of a cliff, thanks alot 'normal' people! Great people skills!
+SIG442 I know the feeling dude. I have those as well as Tourettes, work has been a struggle for me big time as has relationships. They say things will get better, but I have yet to see this myself.

10:00-10:30 is when the noises that may cause sensory overloads happen, just incase anyone wants to skip over that. Its loud and has static-y noises and overlapping voices and its pretty loud.

I was diagnosed with high asbergers and im currently 13 my friend at school help me get through my life Note: Looking people in the eye is uncomfortable because we feel like we're being judged or at lease that's how i feel. i love all of my family and friend and all that suppor me thank you for making my life good even if my family is poor :(

One thing that I didn't know about autism was some of the vision problems that comes along with it
+TheSingingScouser its part of the sensory issues. My son who has autism is both hyposensitive and hypersensitive, so to little stimulation or too much stimulation (touch, sound, sight, smell) can affect him really badly, this can lead to a melt down. sensory aids help, ear protectors and sun glasses and a dark den where he goes if thing are getting to much for him, plus bean bags and noisy items as a stimuli. Once you know how it works for that person its easier to help.

A lot of the times I will have sensory activities for the kids in Sunday school because one has autism the sensory activity this week is play dough they all love play dough

I recently took my 2 year old Handsome baby boy to be evaluated. I knew some thing wasn't right and he was diagnosed with Asperger's.. I had the same reaction that most parents have who don't know any thing of this condition.even after the doctor explained that my baby boy was definitely going to be fine and is developing in such a way that it impressed the doctor.. ( not to brag in fact I'm actually a little jealous of my son 😅 but he is picking up Spanish very quickly as well as Thai. Ave here I'm forgetting the Spanish that i was born with) But, never knew what his world was like nor did i have any idea how experience everyday life. Until i saw this video. It took every thing in my to not break down. I had no idea how intense life is...... Thank you for this video and they are such beautiful and gifted children.

omg, this video is so good, i love it and i have autism. I know it can be hard, i know it can be thought but accept us we are just like u and we can do all the same things as u can so plese just accsept us for who we are. my brother has autism and yesterday our school did an autism awareness power point and it was very disappointing at one point glorifying it in the way that was making them seem like aliens which they arent theyre people and it had no proper information in it apart from a few copy and pasted word so i decided that for the speech i need to do in english im doing it on autism awareness because all of these people deserved better that 2 lines of copy and pasted words and a video. this video was worded so well

I have a cousin who has severe Autism. He doesn't communicate much especially at his age. He is thirteen and uses an i-pad to communicate. I also have a friend who has Autism too. She likes her routines and doesn't like minor changes. Because I have Down syndrome it's really difficult to educate myself to learn more about Autism especially when it comes to very different things that I don't have any expertise about. I find it difficult to be around autistic people. Most importantly, autistic people are hard to read since I can't tell their body language, facial expressions, and verbally.

OK, about the point made around the 3:00 mark - LOTS of us on the spectrum actually prefer "autistic" to "with autism", as the latter implies we have some sort of disease, which autism is NOT, though I respect whichever an individual prefers. Many of us prefer to think about autism as like a linux while the rest of the world (the "neurotypicals", as we call them) are macs.
