HO Scale (SRY Rail Link) Locomotive (wet-on-wet) Paint - Weathering Tip | Boomer Diorama ~ # 240

- The comprehensive (Part 3) Sunday episode follows this midweek tip. Acrylic paint washes (wet-on-wet) have the advantage of soft transitions and fast dry time with almost instant results. If you apply them super thin you avoid overwhelming the underlying color with room to correct things.

Thanks
You are awesome supporter of the channel! Thank you Peter! Cheers ~ Boomer.
Thanks Boomer, fascinating to see how much you use this technique across the layout.
Many thanks!
Great video I'm always terrified painting like this lol!!
Wet the whole piece and dab in a little color. Try a cheap car. ;-)
Thank you! Since I started using your technique of water and letting the paint flow, I have been much more pleased with my weathering. Thanks again!
it makes a big difference if you use a drop of liquid detergent or wetting agent in the water as well. It relieves the surface tension and causes the acrylic pigment to blend better.
@@boomerdiorama Will do! Thanks!
Boomer never disappoints!!!
Well . . . some I do but thank you! heers ~ Boomer.
Thank again for talk you gave at InterCity
You are very welcome! Cheers ~ Boomer.😁
Hey Boomer, thanks again for your example to us. Model railroaders, great stuff very nice.🎩🎩off to ya👍🏻🚂
Thanks 👍
You make it look so easy, haha. Practice makes perfection I suppose
😁
One of the best techniques I use, especially on roofs of Locomotives.
Agreed!
That’s almost magic.
It works!
A fantastic series to follow along with, and it couldn't be more perfectly timed. I've finally plucked up the courage to build Minnesota Commercial 316, one of two RS27s (the other is 318), from what was intended to be a spares loco when I bought it. Those two MNNR RS27s were in service for such a long time that there are a myriad of small changes to them that tell their story. Each is different in subtle ways too. It's been fun building and adding details, plus making a significant correction to the cab that pretty much every manufacturer has got wrong so far. Just applied the paint and decals, and so to final finishing and light weathering. You are spot on about a locomotive becoming cherished once you have put so much effort into building a specific unit. I've got an Atlas SD35 to play with too, so this series gives me some specific inspiration to perhaps super-detail it as well.
If you ever feel the inclination, I know I would benefit from tips and tricks for decals and perhaps others would too. I hate decals with a passion and they fill me with dread every time even if I do manage good results in the end. It would be nice to have a little more confidence with them. Wonderful to see you saving a loco from the parts bin too.
I think I cover some of that in the paint episode this coming Sunday.
Boomer, great result. Wet on wet certainly gives a great result. Thank you for showing how to do it.
Thank you for sharing, the loco is looking amazing.
Cheers, and stay safe, Michael
Thank you! Cheers!
Thanks!
Thank you!
Great video Boomer, gives me ideas what to do with my narrow gauged Alco HH600 locomotive for some weathering as she operates on my Lost Creek Lumber Company
Go for it!
Beautiful Boomer.
Thank you kindly!
Great job Boomer very realistic
Cheers. . . . Thank You.
Great looking locomotive! The wet on wet technique is awesome! I have done it with great results.
Thanks 👍
thanks for the tips
No problem!
Cool 👍
This method is worth a try on almost any subject - like buildings and other vehicles, etc. Cheers ~ Boomer.
Boomer, How sweet it is. I'll have to have a Hot-x- Bun as a thank you for that. Happy Easter. Cheers, Chris Perry.
The full episode is this Sunday!
Practice...practice. Another great video.
Yes! Thank you!
Nice work on the center brake, bars on the lower trucks.
How's she run? Looks very smooth, EMD quality.
I can tell ....you've had experience at this kind of stuff ....before.😊
BTW ...Acme Cinematography is back up on Y.T. if you like something like that on while your working on the layout.
Thanks 👍
Great tips. Thanks for sharing.
You are so welcome!
" 🤝👍 " ...Danke
😉👍
👍👍👍
Full episode is this Sunday!
Nice use of the wet-on-wet for a locomotive. Did you do the same on the walkways? Looking down on motive power often shows weathered walways, but they can be fifficult to keep subtle.
Yes I did. The full painting episode is this Sunday. ;-)
Amazing🖌🎨🚂🇨🇦🙋Still running laps so you don't have to😁🚂
Cool 👍
Did I miss something? When did you show how you painted these?
Every Sunday. The longer features are always on following Sunday. Sometimes I release teaser tips before the feature release. Cheers.
Boomer, the wet on wet you only use Vallejo Air, will Vallejo color work as well?
Absolutely! In fact the Vallejo colors should go further since they are heavier pigment at the start.
Hello! What are you using to wet the parts before applying the dabs of weathering paints? Thank you!
Water with a "tiny" drop of liquid detergent ( or wetting agent) for acrylic paint.
@@boomerdiorama great! Thank you!👍👍
What did you use to wet the pilot?
Water. Ity also helps to add a few drops of liquid detergent to the water bottle as well.
What is a safe dry time between layers?
Ten minutes or even less, depending how much water is pooled up in crevices etc. A fan helps to increase the dry time even faster. ;-)
@@boomerdiorama Thanks, yet again. I enjoy all your vids and have learned (and un-learned) a lot. Caveat: The Blue Danube is one of my favorite Classical pieces. 2001 A Space Oddity ruined it, because now I see a Blue Geep rotating in front of the space station instead of the PanAm Orbiter... ;-)
Your photos of the prototype Rail Link seems like that loco was just painted, will you lightly weather yours, like the prototype?
I get the weathering, it looks very real but the money I spend on the locos and rolling stock, it’s hard to bring myself to mess up the new look. Like my 24 year old Buick Lasabre, it looks like new, I hate when it gets weathered 😂😂
Maybe use water colors and powders so I can wash & wax em, LOL I must be anal/OCD😂😂😂
I did weather it some, but not much. The actual prototype is very clean other than the trucks.
You should treat yourself to a new printer
This is a new printer . . . lol. It's a flake. One day it prints beautiful and the next day they suck. Tried everything.
On the other hand, I just bought one of the best Nikon lens money can buy for the channel and it is awesome. Nikon 14-24mm F/2.8G. Just learning how to use it and the pics are stunning, Cheers.
I did . . . and a new Nikon Lens that is blowing me away . . . lol.
