Painting & Weathering Scale Model Pavement | River Road ~ Vlog # 159

- This is how I paint & weather scale pavement that is light weight and won't shrink or crack!. In this case an HO Scale Model Railroad subject. I skim coat texture paste over sealed 1/8" Balsa Wood sheet. I explain and demonstrate how to paint thin "filter" washes with isolation coats using water based varathane. This method produces a remarkable finish with scale depth and desaturated color.

I love watching you paint and seeing the end result. You have made me a much better modler I used be afraid to screw up a paint job before but now I love acrylics now. The thing you taught me was if you screw up wash it off and start over till your satisfied. Thank you.

Boomer, your approach to modeling, painting and the artistry is awesome and refreshing. too many get hung up on any one particular method or even the mediums to use. We (my son Brett and I from The Bench Time Podcast) found that trying every method and resource out there, and there are many, even if they fail or you don't get the result you needed, makes you a better modeler and artist. Sfumato! Thanks for sharing this valuable technique that can be applied to all aspects of model and diorama building. I can see it being a very useful technique for finishing an antique piece of furniture as well.
It is easier to demo on a larger scale. I use the technique on small models as well. ;-)

Great video and the asphalt turned out great! I love that Vallejo air dunkelbraun, it is great for weathering rust on freight cars and old rails and looks great on the parking lot too!
The Vallejo colors are awesome for weathering if you are a fan of water based paints for sure. ;-)

I keep coming back to this when I need a brush up on the clear coat. verithane? Basically water based polyurethane?
I did some experimenting with my road on my layout. I used the woodland scenics smooth it. I think it was before I saw this video, but I didn’t put anything in to color the plaster or tone it down. It was stark white and I was going to paint it gray and maybe try to weather it. I ended up splashing ipa on it and dots of India ink. Worked pretty well. Put the Verithane over top of that.
Yes. I believe polyurethane is water based as well. Probably the same stuff but different marketing.

I am one of those folks that you refer to often as "afraid to make painting mistakes" due to the very low model railroad budgets I have had most of my long life, and therefore felt the need to "do it right the first time" cause I can't afford money-wise or time-wise to do it over. I hate that approach and with your encouragement I am endeavoring to to learn to practice now that my budget is larger. Since I am just learning, really for the first time, how to paint model railroad scenery that looks realistic, (and yours looks absolutely is AMAZING) I want to learn to PRACTICE, but I don't know what components are critical to the results. Hence my VARATHANE question.... I can find the water-based Varathane you are using in Canada (like Home Depot for $46 can.), I have not been able to find it in the US.
My question is: what are the critical elements of this VARATHANE? Obviously water-based, satin, and clear. In the US I can only find Urethane or Polyurethane. Do you think either of these would be a good substitute?
I appreciate whatever help you can provide.
PS: I do have access to the TAMIYA Acrylics!!
Any varathane (Urethane, Polyurethane or Varathane) will work. I just prefer water-based. Make sure it is satin.
Many thanks. I found that Amazon sells "Rust-Oleum 250241H Ultimate Spar Urethane Water Based, Quart, Satin Finish" which matches your suggestion, so I ordered that. On a side note, I requested this detail from you so that I could have some success using a process that works. Hopefully, then I can expand to more trial and error, given I have experienced for myself a process that produces good results. The internet has been a two-edged sword, providing much needed how-to instruction like yours, but couched in a morass of questionable other instruction, leaving the viewer in a quandary over which info will work for them!!

@@hughhall1167 Ultimately you have to experiment and develop your own method and style based on the plethora of techniques and info via your own experience. One method may not work for the other. Dear Boomer, just awesome how you’ve shown these steps. Love the depth it creates. Very much like the ‘Sfumato’ approach. And indeed a lot of water is the essence, even dirty water. Still looking though for a good European Varathane alternative. Thought I found one, but it still has the tendency to give a kind of yellow sheen. Cheers
Any water based clear coat (or varnish) from artist supply should work as well.
@@boomerdioramathe clear coat I found is a water based acrylic clear coat. However, it’s one from a wood floor product range. Definitely says clear coat on the label, but has a distinctive yellow sheen. Bought it at the local European equivalent of Home Depot. I’ll check with the local paint specialist store, they might be able to give better advice.
@@vincenthuying98 I would avoid the "yellow" tint if you can. There must be a true "clear" coat available.
Boomer, great video. Know you posted awhile it back but have a quick question for you if you have time. I understand the idea of experimenting and not trying to use a set formula, but ... . You mention "wash, rinse, seal, repeat" and I want to be sure I understand as I start my own experimenting. I understand seal (satin varnish) and repeat (layers), but not sure I fully understand wash and rinse. I know you poured paint on a sealed surface and then added water to spread. Is that "wash and rinse" or have I missed something? Thanks in advance. John
Wash & rinse just means repeating things that work. I usually put the water on before paint when I use washes. ;-)
Boom, looking at your drawing, on top of the balsa you put a layer of pumice gel, yes? Then, seal with varathane, before first paint later?

Hi Boomer! Thank you for sharing your knowledge! Based on one of your recent videos showing fast mache, I'm going to try it on my flat plywood base to give subtle terrain variation. Should I use Varathane to seal the plywood first? Latex paint? Or just put the mache mixture straight on the wood? Thanks!
I would avoid putting the fast Mache directly onto the raw plywood surface. The water can delaminate or warp the plywood surface, especially when the Fast Mache shrinks and the water evaporates. It is best to be patient and prep the plywood surface with varathane first. You can use a heavy coat of latex paint if you are in a pinch. One quart of varathane will do you well for a long time and you can use it seal almost anything. Cheers.😄😁

So the asphault is done, then you notice a lonf runnning crack in the surface and think the must be a natural fault, so you make a sign saying danger AssPhalt with an arrow point to the crack..... ah ha ha ha ha

Can you use something other than Varathane (polyurethane or shellac for example)?
If you do don't blame me if it doesn't work out.
I use water-borne varathane because it is compatible with the water based paints I specifically use. The ones you mention I am not sure about so you will have to try for your self.

Boomer you are simply a magician. I don't know how many more times I can watch River Road videos and catch myself in awe of this masterpiece. However,my uncle that lives in Germany has a CZcams and has a layout he is working on..If you are interested I would love to give you his channel name. I have a feeling that you and him set the standard and bar of modeling..He did some Diorama modelling for a couple German TV shows about 10 years ago. Would you be interested. I have shared your channel with him and would love for you to see his..would then love to hear your feedback..

He merely calls it a Diorama instead of layout. However I really just wanted you to tell me what your opinion is on his modelling.
