  • Nayara Justino thought her dreams had come true when she was selected as the Globeleza carnival queen in 2013 after a public vote on one of Brazil’s biggest TV shows. But some regarded her complexion to be too dark to be an acceptable queen. Nayara and her family wonder what this says about racial roles in modern Brazil

But worse than this is that there's also a bunch of people (white and black) who live in denial, like your teacher or Lucas here. It's a lot easier to pretend the problem does not exist. I'm Brazilian and this painting pretty much represents my and many Brazilians life! My grandfather is black and married a white Brazilian of Italian descent to have light children. My mother who is biracial was always told since she was a child by my grandfather to not bring home a black man because he already improved the race (he said you have to go "up" not down). My father is half white/japanese Brazilian and I am (like many Brazilians) a mixture of it all. Till this day my grandfather talks about I should marry a white man and not mixed/asian or black because this will "pollute" my race. This ideology is in so many Brazilian families and nobody likes to admit or talk about it. The self-hate of black Brazilians is insane and very sad! They would do ANYTHING to have a white blonde, light skin child. Just look at all our black celebrities, soccer players like Neymar, Pele, Ronaldo, Robinho.. actors or singers like Thiaginho, Alex Pires, Ludmilla and so on.. they all date/marry white exclusively! I'm all for love but it's really weird and conspicuous that not ONE is with a person of their own colour! They all grow up with self-hate and probably have family members like mine who tell them to "upgrade" the race. I kind of understand why this black woman is marrying a white man to "upgrade" and her children not go through the same as she did..but I don't think that this is the solution! Stop racism/shadism and start loving YOURSELF! God didn't make a mistake when he created you! He loves you.

+Llh Ihh Thank you for sharing your story. A documentary is one thing, but to see a person's personal experience expressed here in the comment section is another. The mentality that many black people in Brazil have is indeed tragic.
I am African American, and I currently live in Rio de Janeiro. In acquainting myself with the current popular music scene of Brazil, I came across the music videos of some of the artists you mentioned.
I saw three different ones by the singer Ludmilla, and in all of them, her love interest was white. In fact, I saw no black man in sight, which for me as an American, was bizarre.
Any music video for any black female singer in the United States, whether it is Beyonce or Ciara or Ashanti or any others anyone can think of past or present, the love interest is always a black man. And in their personal lives, they are all married to or primarily date or have children with black men.
So, imagine my shock when I saw these things in Brazil and not one of these artists featured a black love interest. It was very disappointing to see. I even noticed when I am in upscale neighborhoods in Rio like Leblon or Ipanema, there are very few, if any, faces of predominant African descent. It was very disappointing to see this in a country so allegedly proud of its mixed heritage.
While I generally like and respect Brazilians very much, their great friendliness, passion for live, conversation, etc. and I have a wealth of positive experiences in Brazil, this shame in dark skin or African features that is prevalent in the culture is very disturbing.
You are completely correct, racism and colorism have no place in a civilized society, especially in a society that prides itself on multiracial heritage.

You make a point, but notice how you spoke of your "little town." This documentary is not about your "little town," it is about Brazil in general as a country and nation and it's national culture, or at least the international perception of it's national culture.
Yes, Brazil does have a very large white population, but the fact is that when most people outside of Brazil generally think of Brazilians, it's not the image of a white person that comes to mind. That is not just Americans, that is the international community in general.
Any white Brazilian who has traveled outside of Brazil knows that most people in the world think of non-white people when they think of Brazilians, regardless of how many white people actually live in Brazil or how the majority of the South of Brazil looks.
What are the things Brazil is internationally famous for? Was Samba invented in the South of Brazil? No. Capoeira? No. Feijoada? No. Does most of Brazil's famous soccer players come from the South of Brazil? No.
The reality is that the vast majority of things that Brazil is famous for on an international level, such as Carnaval, Samba (the music and the dance), Capoeira, and sports figures (in the soccer/futeball world), and even the stereotypes of the "bunda" and voluptuous figures on women, are overwhelmingly of mixed race and/or black in origin.
So when people mentally put a face to all the things that Brazil is famous for on an international level, it's not a white face that comes to mind.
That is not to say there are no white Brazilians or that White Brazilians are not an important aspect of Brazil, that is simply saying that from an international perspective, it is not white people that are thought of when people think about Brazil, because foreigners to any country only know that country for what its famous for, not for every single thing that it is.

But they truly would like to be with one . I feel sorry for dark women who don't see a lot of that . They even have a Netflix series that comes on , and it is based on the slave trade . Slave Masters risking reputation to be with these women even when wife disapproves . Slave Masters sneaking around to get to e'm however they can get to e'm . I have had white guys tell me to my face that they do like dark black women . And in this racist world - takes a lot for a white guy to ever say something like that . Especially in that part of the country . But the get out in public forum - and they have to make sure mom and dad don't get upset . That's why this woman in Brasil got treated the way she did . Why is it, according to you, wrong for Blacks to have a sense of global unity? How, according to you, does that strip each group of its individuality? No, I sense you have a fear of something deeper, probably related to money. A Mende will still be a Mende, a Pondo a Pondo, an African American an African American, yet we can all live, work, and marry without WWIII taking place. This hurts my soul, especially the part where the painting was critiqued. I have to attest that I think in the complete opposite manner than how the composition was derived. Mixing with any kind of European dilutes the beauty and purity of Africans. I do agree with Nayara that love knows no color, but it is very clear that the culture of Brazil, South America, Central America, and North America as well as many other countries destroy their future potential time and time again in not seeing the power and knowledge that Africans hold and have held since the beginning of humanity. Destroy the foundation of humanity and the structure will fall.

Slavery ended abruptly in 1888 for Brazil. After that no drastic form of discrimination took place like what went on in America with KKK or Jim Crow. The Blacks of Brazil were never forced to fight racism heads on. They never had their own civil rights movement. The overt racism became less obvious but the covert racism was and still is there.
What makes it weird is that Brazil had the most imported slaves during the Atlantic slave trade at 4 million while only 300K came to the U.S. Blacks literally have the number to run the country but they've been denied education and basic living standards for over a century. They don't want them to prosper..

She is a great inspiration to everyone, especially dark skin girls everywhere. she should know that her elegant beauty, grace, intelligence, character, humility are what stands out the most. Ultimately, she wins. There will always be those who are jealous who envy the power that you have to change this world, one step at a time. She will always have to deal with ignorance and absolutely stupidity from those who feel threatened by what they want to control. She will always have this story to tell her grandchildren one day. She is a winner and I am proud of her. Go girl!
