Got wind of someone making his 18650 DIY Tesla Powerwall without capacity testing their cells. This is my reply! Instead of trying to talk them out of the idea I would like to document the reality of doing a powerwall this way as safely as possible.
The downside to this is I'll be fully on the grid for about a week while I test and film but fingers crossed I get the results I expect - if not I guess we will all win.

Thanks for tuning in as always!

Been 18650ED ? -
This is really awesome. now I also what to build it too
Love the video! Working on using wasted energy projects. Wind, solar, water. Anyways great job man!
we talked to you last night and live video someone mentioned testing batteries and now you're making a video good to see you do pay attention to us thank you
Good lord you battery hoarder! XD i really enjoyed this setup.. keep up the good work dude!

Thanks for these videos. I'm learning a lot. Specifically what gauge wire do you use as a 'fuse' to connect the cells into the buss?
Whoa!!! Havent heard of this method before but like you said to each his own... or Her???
Nice editing and production. Good work!
"...and I just broke the toaster" sorry for the toaster but that produced an honest to goodness guffaw from me while watching. :P Cheers Pete, keep making the awesome vids!
don't burn your house down think about fire and how your gonna stop thermal runaway from old used cells looks like it's in a metal shed hopefully away from your house
Hey, love your vids man keep tearing these packs to shreds.. quick question. I've gone through a number of your vids and many others in regards to these lithium powered systems using the MPP solar inverters, but i haven't found a straight answer on how to set them up for lithium specifically.(might be an awesome idea for a full walkthrough vid btw). I'm about to make a 24-volt system with the pip2424lv-msd(in the U.S.) and im able to get the same size lithium pack in my area as agm, but i dont know how to setup these inverters for it.
Damn you guys are lucky to be able to have access to busted battery packs, I really wish I could get cracking on a project like that I have the really big 2v batteries with the water acid, Pain in the butt! but is what I could do at the time of install, the guys out here try and conk us out for half the load of what the batteries cost new and I am not going to take a gamble if I don't know what I'm going to get, I know that most of the time there will be one or two cells maybe bad, but taking that the actuall modules cost 2KNAD new and they want 1KNAD for a busted one theres no way I could just as well by new LG or Sanyo 18650's for that price! Love the videos cudos! Regards Charles from Namibia
Out of curiosity, and a spirit of reckless experimentation, I ran 50 ma into a few laptop cells ( about 100 ) at <.5 volts until they came up to 2.5 and then into a charger at 500ma - 4.2 volt limited. Some of course were open , and if they were self discharging and or heating I rejected them. Cycled and recorded capacity, some were 2.5 amp hours, most were 1 to 1.5 amp hour and anything below .75 amp hours were destine for the "country and western" box ( they's a hurtin but ain't dead yet ). Then left the charged cells alone for two months and checked charges. 75% of them actually passed all that. I'm not about to do a power wall with these ( well any salvage 18650s ) but they've been in flashlights and USB power banks for a year now with no issues and I am thinking of making a few low voltage UPS to keep things like the cordless phones and the cell phone amp running during outages. Probably use a PIC to monitor charging and switch the loads, then again a set of diodes and a boost regulator and just toggle the charge circuit between on at 3.7 volts and off at 3.9 would be quick to build.
Thats amazing. i just wonder when i saw all the massive packs on the wall and some small board on the battery pack. what are the pack for to run fully only 4.2v? on what ever how many thousands of Mah of batteries
am i understanding this correctly that this is one single large parallel cell and they are put into series on the wall itself? iv got alot to learn about these powerwalls.
After longer time what do you think is the better System: the BatteryHookup Nickel Fuse or the System of this Video and: how often do you need to check (and repair) the fuses?
I already have solar. How or where can I find a DIY on doing a 30kw setup?
Hey Pete, great vid as usual. Could you possibly share the link where to get that battery holder @
