the making of this battery packs was really interesting, i really liked to watch those series, with tons of things to learn, and visibly a secure mind in their design...
effectively, the fire hazard of lithium ion is a thing that stay somewhere in mind, i think that if i was able to make the same packs, it would be in a shelter far away from the house 😉
those types of fires are so scary, especially in a basement i suppose 😉
i bet that we are probably someone to be interested by a full technical review of the staying capacity of these packs after the passed time 🙂
100%! I learned a ton building and did mostly everything I could oo prevent a future 🔥or mishap minus a suppression system. You betcha fire hazard was/IS always in the back of my mind. If I had a shed away from the house Id keep them in service. Ill be doing a capacity test video for sure!!💥🤘

All cloud here Joe. I sold my cells during the Pandemic, 4000 batteries. Still have some hanging around. Sold my old packs a month ago. I need two busbar now.

Same here, Joe, same here. 18650s, in my experience, are a good choice for small, more mobile, power packs. For power walls, larger LifePo4 cells are the way.
Yeah its time for the BIG switch! Oh yeah for sure dont get me wrong. There are plenty of uses for 18650! If I had a better place to house them in Id keep using it for sure. Indoors, LiFePO4 for the WIN!!!💥🤘

Hey Joe! glad to see you back :) I am enjoying the irony of you dismantling your Li-Ion DIY battery as I sit here shucking 18650s to build something similar :) I got an awesome deal on several hundred unused brand new drill packs that I am slowly working through and meanwhile thinking that Fe batteries are a much safer choice. Anyways, I would be interested in the overview video you had mentioned. Great to see you again and see in the next one!

@@AveRage_Joe I got a phone call from a guy in Hamilton that used to own a Canadian Tire ... They had a brand of tools called Yard Works which was discontinued so he took a sh*t ton of the proprietary brand new batteries that have never been used. They sat in totes forever and he did nothing with them and said that if I picked them up they were free...which I did :) They have Samsung INR18650-20Q batteries in them and I suspect that I shall have about 1400 of them or so in the end. I shall be shucking forever!!
@ 7:45 with the 2.35V it’s most likely ghost voltage. If you have a LoZ function on the meter, or a meter that has the LoZ option it will show a much more true and accurate voltage with AC when using that LoZ function.

This my idea to fix the fire problem. Build a concrete block Cabnet with a slab on top and a commercial steel door. Joe you could just roll that steel cabnet inside and shut the door. No fire is getting out of that.
I have basically that in my basement now minus the steel door(which I was making). I think they used it as a storm shelter back in the day or prepped for the end of world!!
@@AveRage_Joe You poured your heart and soul into that system and got many of us in gear to do ours. This is just my on thoughts on your outstanding work. Seeing that being unhooked is like the Dog died. I hope you change your mind and still keep it safe.. Glad your going full time. Most channels are buying these new batterys also. They are nice, turn key, $$$$$$ and costly.

How do you plan to dispose of the batteries? Will you discharge first?
Havent decided what Ill actually do with them yet but if I dispose them, yes Ill 100% discharge them!!💥🤘
Sad to see it go but also glad you are moving to a safer chemistry. I would love to see some capacity tests on those packs if you have the time. If they still have some life left you might even find a use for them away from the house in a weatherproof enclosure with a BMS that has low temp and high temp cutoff. They will survive freezing and higher temps for a while as long as the cells on not being cycled during the extremes. I have nearly 15KWh of flat pack cells from chrombooks that I still need to finish testing and find a use for.

i cant imagine how that setup ever paid for itself in electricity savings.
Alot of stuff was recycled. I did buy inverter. Its not only for electricity savings, In a few power outages it can pay for itself by keeping the fridge and freezer on especially after just going to the store! 🤘

The end of an era lol. I've got my purpose built power shed so i'm still rocking 18650s for the forseable future.
Sad Day!!! If I had a purpose built shed Id keep in service for sure!!! I still have another 1600+ cells tested for when I planned on a 2nd 18650 build that Ill need to get rid of!!😆🙄💥🤘
@@AveRage_Joe It is a pretty attractive option though going with those larger format cells, and if I had the coin to drop on them I'd do it in a heart beat, but ya i've got tons of good 18650's just waiting to be thrown into service when i get the motivation to work on them.

boom boom f boom wow ! the neatest job i have ever saw what are you doing with those big toroidal trannys i have a brand new 24 mosfet eg002 board here its one of the auto detecting batt voltage one 12 to 96 volts i also have a never used big sendust choke i built for it i have built bunches of these type inverters the oldest is 4 or 5 years now the highest idle on any that i have built is well under half of a amp and as low as low as 0.26 of a amp they are very tough and good inverters So you know whats coming next you should build a inverter! Or if not do you want to get rid of one or both of your transformers the wife and i both are glad to see your get back to your channel it WILL no pun do good your much better no joke i died on that getting in car voom voom video have a blessed day let me know if we can get on a trade!!
Thanks!!! Yeah id have to do some research on inverter building. I grabbed those trannys for that reason if I ever got a chance. I hear trannys are the best type. These 2 weigh a freakn ton. Had to drag then down here 1 step at a time and them onto a rolly cart. NO JOKE HEAVY.

Not sure on the 18650s yet. I have a bunch of cells Ill probly sell if I can. Batrium will be used on new powerwall. UPS......hmmmm maybe use for other battery tests? Need anything? Local?
I collected a bunch of those batteries at first but then once I looked at the risks and as lifepo4 cells became available I decided against going that route, fortunately spent nothing on those cells either. 24kwh of lifepo4 cells doing my work so far, plan to add more later this year, last battery added was a 230ah pack made from EVE cells that replaced the original BYD cells I had that proved to be crap. Been very happy with the setup. I assume you'll move your batrium over to the new power wall setup?
Yep, started the 18650 project before lifepo4 was a feasible thing. Luckily didnt spend to much on 18650s. Thats why it took so long cause I usually waited for free cells! Super glad I purchased the 280ah cells before the last price hike. Cant wait to get this in service! Good to hear you just went for lifepo4 to start with! Yeah for sure reusing the batrium!!💥🤘

Thanks! Havent decided what Ill do with them as of yet but I would discharge the packs and then take to recycler. If they wanted it disassembled, easy peasy!💥🤘

How long do you think that was in service for? Mines been in for 3 years and now thinking exactly the same. Fun to build and its saced me loads of money but don't want it in house anymore.
Id say around 5ish years maybe or a little under. Yeah its time to move on especially since lifepo4 is readily available and much cheaper nowa days.💥🤘

Why not just put the new cells into the old rack, that way you can keep most of the wiring and accessories and have it neatly in a movable rack? Since you're moving to LiFePO4's then you don't need the closed cabinets that you now want to put the new LiFePO4 cells into. 🙂
I originally was going to do that but then decided I wanted a more compact battery. With the boxes mounted on the wall it takes up less space and should have a nice clean installation!💥🤘

Sweet trick to put the system on the grid through the app. Which setting did you use to do that?
I used the "shinephone" app that growatt has. Its an ok app. Not always instant but fairly quick.
@@AveRage_Joe right, the app updates at 5 minute intervals, which is lame. But in the settings did you just change the priority source? Also do you have the enter the password every time or is there a way around that.
Oh ya my bad, yeah just change source to utility for a few hours then switch back later. Yeah I have to enter in the dumb password everytime🙄

Just recently found out why, too. Apparently about 20yrs ago I sustained a massive trauma to my lower back, and my L5 was fractured in two locations.
So yeah, going on that long of a ride isn't gonna be fun 😜 Well, unless I went in an RV and took a week to get there.
Oh ya I 100% understand. I have the 5 disks that are shot in lower and mid back. I cant do long drives much anymore🙄

Like how much money? My 4 6volt batteries are almost dead and need to replace them. I am looking for replacements. I've been living off of 4 harbor freight 90 watt systems for 5 years now. It's time I need a bigger up grades. I don't see why I can't come an pick them up myself.
