    I took this thing apart and found the tabs that hold the board (bottom footswitch pub) to the unit had worked off of the down switch. That's how the little black plastic piece came out. Luckily, I saved it in an old screw box and actually found it. These tabs had glue applied to them but still worked themselves off the board. They don't appear to be broken. So, tightened them up and applied more glue, buttoned her back up and I'm back in business. Thanks Doug for the push to do it.

    Great help. My COMP (Boost) wasn't working. For a $9.00 can of contact cleaner you saved me a $75.00 repair bill.
    Now..on to my VOX AD60VT with the power selector switch that doesn't always work.

    i got so lucky with mine. basically what i did is that i stumbled across this video, followed your instructions, and all i needed to do was soak the switches in contact cleaner and work the cleaner into the switches. my pod x3 works perfect right out of the box now! and i dont have problems switching patches anymore which once again is really crucial for me when i play live

    Thanks so much for this awesome video. I have a Line 6 POD HD500 which has the same exact problem so I will give this a whirl. Not sure how I even found this but you may want to change the title or tag words to help people find it. Maybe to have Line 6 Foot Switch Repair Replacement HD500 in the tags. You are right - there is very little info on this on the net.

    My "Up Bank" switch has stopped working, so your video is brilliant. However, I've heard on Forums that there's an inherent problem with the switches on early X3Ls and that Line 6 will replace them (if your product's serial number is on the magic list!) for free. Having said that, I emailed them on February 26th 2013 and they don't appear to be in any rush to get back to me! I'll give it another couple of weeks then I think I'll have to get my hands dirty. Thanks a lot for the video.

    thank you so much for this video!!!! at least it was your tap/tuner button. problem with me is that i run multiple patches in the course of a live set. i typically use 10 different patches and 30 different patch cues throughout the course of an average evening so i have different sounds on different banks and my C button and my bank up AND down buttons were going bad

    Still useful in 2019. Picked up a used HD500 at Guitar Center over the weekend. They told me it had a couple of known issues, one of which was a couple switches that would get stuck. I talked them into knocking another $20 off the price. Going to clean and/or replace the switches this week, as well as the toe switch. Thanks for the explanation and tips!

    Thanks for the video. Mine is the down button and I remember seeing a small piece of plastic fall out after it stopped working. I'll bet mine is part of the button assy, not the switch. I'll take it apart today and post my results. You'd think there would be a few of these on eBay as broken for parts but I haven't seen any. Seems to be almost impossible to get these switch parts from Line 6.

  • @chuckbrand298

    They seem to be a little slow getting back to you. If you opened a ticket they will see it.If you contacted them via email, you might want to follow up with a trouble ticket. If your unit is registered, they have your address. From what I was told all of the X3L's mechanical switch parts and the microswitch (ligth path boards) are covered under a lifetime warranty. You will probably be directed to an authorized repair shop. Thanks for the comment and keep on Jammin'!

However, if you can get it open to see what the jack looks like, you may be able to find one on ebay. Jacks are typically not to hard to change. Look for broken wires or bad solder connections too. It might just need resoldered.

    I was having trouble with my Tap/Tuner footswitch. Sometimes it was intermittent. You may have to clean the micro switches with contact cleaner. Spray the contact cleaner into the side of the micro switch whilel you push it several times. That should flush it out and lubricate the contacts inside. If that doesn't fix it, you may have to replace the micro switch.

    This video was so useful! But I have a question.
    The button under the wah/volume pedal stopped working on mine (weird because I only used it in my bedroom, rarely and always gently). Is the procedure the same than you did to fix the tuner button on yours?
    I can almost see in your video where the micro switch for the wah pedal is (right under the pedal where the long white cable comes from). I will try the circuitry cleaner as well. I don't have official Line6 support near. Thank you!

  • @AndresGerardoB
    @AndresGerardoB Před 9 lety

    Hi Chuck, I hope you're doing great. Thank you for sharing your experience with us.
    You know, I have a similar issue with my POD X3 Live. But in my case, all the switches broke down at the same time, the only thing that still works is the expression pedal (the wah on/off switch still works, too). The LEDs won't turn on even if I toggle the effects on/off manually from the main board.
    Do you think it's the flex that connects the main board with the footswitch boards or the individual switches? Maybe a short because of humidity? I'd like to think it's the switches but I can't be sure 'cause all of them stopped working at the same time and that's too much of a coincidence for me to buy it.
    Thank you in advance, Chuck.
    Andrés

  • @chuckbrand298
    @chuckbrand298  Před 9 lety +2

    Andre Berrios, For some reason I cannot reply to your question, so I hope you get this. My guess is that if all of the buttons are not working, it map be the ribbon cable that connects the foot switch boards to the processor board. I don't think that all of the micro switches would go bad all at one. The ribbon cable may have come loose or fell off. If that is the case, put it back on and use a hot glue gun to hold it together. just put a dab of hot glue on each side (not too much).
    If it's not the ribbon cable, then (sorry to say) it might actually be something on the processor board. I sure hope not.
    Good luck, and let me know what you find.

    • @AndresGerardoB
      @AndresGerardoB Před 9 lety

      Hi, Chuck
      Thank you so much for your insight! I hope it's just the flex that may have come loose... I'll crack that bad boy open and I'll let you know what surprise I find there :) I hope it won't be a really bad one!

      @JEUS2010 Před 9 lety +1

      Hi Chuck, I'm Andres' friend, I'm actually the owner of the PodX3L that he had issues with. We managed to dissasembly it and we discovered it was indeed the flex what made all the buttons break at the same time, the flex was disconnected. We put the flex back in place and all the buttons started working again.
      The only problem we had is that the plastic clips that hold the "top" board in place were broken (probably because of ageing, the pedalboard is around 7 years old) so we had to "improvise" something that could hold the board in place. and now my PodX3L works perfectly.
      As Andres said before, thanks A LOT for your insight and your tutorial video on how to fix the pedalboard! Really helped us find the courage to dissasembly it and finally fix it! :D

    • @chuckbrand298
      @chuckbrand298  Před 4 lety

      I will say that it is rare for an LED to go bad, but they do. If you have a multimeter you can check the LEDs. LEDs are like diodes. They only allow current to pass in one direction. If you place the multimeter leads across the LED one way then the other you should only get a reading on the meter in one direction. If you find that you don't get a reading in either direction, the LED is probably bad. Also, many times, I have had meters that were strong enough to actually light the LED. If you do replace them make sure you put them in in the right direction. If you put them in wrong, they won't work. I would guess that if everything is working fine, except the LEDs, then it is probably just the LEDs. Good luck.

    Hello Chuck! Thank you for such a great explanation!
    I recently got one of these used. However, during shipping, it suffered some damage, listed below:
    1. One of the foot switches on the top board went bad. I wouldn't care much about it, still, would like to repair it. The spring feels fine, so I'm suspecting that little black piece is worn out. How do I open the upper board?
    2. The protective bar below the screen came off. The bar itself is fine, just the screws got loose. I can hear them rumbling inside the case. Now, the whole circuit board would be in the way of the mounting holes. How could I remove the board?
    Sorry for the long text.

      +Chuck Brand Thanks for the reply! I think removing the board for upper row foot switches might be a bit tricky.
      Actually, what I was saying was that I had to fix one of those chrome handles which came off. To reach the holes on which they're mounted, I'd have to remove the main circuit board too, not just the board for the foot switches. Any idea how I can do it?

    • @chuckbrand298
      @chuckbrand298  Před 6 lety

      Rhitosparsha Baishya Rhitosparsha Baishya Oh, I see what you're asking. I don't have a X3 Live anymore, so I can't open one up to help you. However, looking at the video, it looks like you will have to take all of the nuts off of the input and output jacks, then remove the screws holding the circuit board. It looks time consuming, but it should be doable. Take your time, don't force anything, and keep track of any nuts or screws that you remove. I would also take a couple of pictures of the inside for a reference on how everything looks now. Let me know how it goes. Pliers should work to take the jack nuts off (carefully).

      Sorry to say that I don't know where you can get those connectors or the cable. Have you tried contact cleaner on the connector and pins? Also, verify that the solder is still good on the mainboard pins. Sometimes the solder breaks lose from the main board and the pins just need re-soldered. Try mouser.com and digikey.com for the connectors to make a new cable.

    • @chuckbrand298
      @chuckbrand298  Před 10 lety

      Uiaran Magalhaes Sorry so late answering. I don't know what the cable is called, but if it's like any other electronic device, the cables name is probably the same as the connector names on the circuit board. For example if the connectors are CN1 and CN4, or J1 and J4, etc... you would ask for the CN1-CN4 cable or the J1-J4 cable. Line 6 would know what you are talking about, if you tell them the connector labels on the circuit board. You could also solder point to point if you are Ok with doing that. Hope that helps.

      That is the correct dimensions. Make sure you choose a switch that has the same size button. Some switches have tall buttons, some have very short buttons. If it is a 6x6 and looks like the picture they show, it should work fine. I hope that helps.

    another thing: what kind of oil did you use on the footswitches?

    • @chuckbrand298
      @chuckbrand298  Před 10 lety

      I used a very light machine oil, like sewing machine oil for lubricating mechanical switches. Be careful not to use too much. Very light coat.

    can you tell me about this???

    • @chuckbrand298
      @chuckbrand298  Před 10 lety

      Possible power supply problem. Have you checked it? Does the LCD have a backlight? You might try re-seating all of the internal connections, and clean them with a contact cleaner. If it's the power supply, order a Line 6 PS-2 power supply from Guitar Center or Musicians Friend. They are about $25.00. Do you know anyone that can loan you a power supply to test with?

    • @chuckbrand298
      @chuckbrand298  Před 10 lety

      Chuck Brand Sorry. It's a PX-2 Power supply.

      Felipe, I don't own the Pod X3 anymore, so I'm not sure about the bottom screws. Perhaps a Google searh could help.

    Hi everyone! please help, my x3 live reverb pot goes randomly crazy from 0-100 %, recalling edit mode everytime :(
    I tried everything from disabling it (reverb OFF) from fxchain, or turning the pot severe times from left to right to see if it's some dust or something, and nothing. It always get back to reverb ON (edit mode). Looked on Line 6 forums for any solution but nobody fixed this or similar issues.
    This behaviour doesn't allows me to edit any other parameters, drive, master, delays, etc...because reverb is always ON and displaying random percentage numbers. It's impossible to play anything with that crazy reverb fx!! :(
    Could it be the solution a pot replacement? the service center told me that I need to replace the motherboard, but I have not that money :(

      Hi Veronica. Sorry about your X3. I don't have a solution. It does sound like it may be a motherboard issue. I would suggest carefully taking the unit apart and lokk for anything obvious. Look for broken wires, loose connectors, and things like that. Get some contact cleaner and clean all of the connectors and pots. Have you tried a full reset of the unit? Hope this helps.

      hey Chuck, thank you so much for your response! Yes I tried full reset and this thing never goes away. Never tried to open it...but some friends suggested the contact cleaning also. I fear to leaving it worst than it is now, ha !!
      Well, I'll ask for helpful hands here in my town, to open it and try the cleaning in a few days.
      Thank you!! regards from Argentina!!

      Verónica Gorosito Watch the video a couple of times. I show you how to open up. I also point out the things you need to watch for. I believe it's a a T5 torx bit that you need. Hopefully a good cleaning is all it needs. Good luck.

    Sergio. I've never actually ordered anything from SparkFun. A friend of mine told me about themI do know that Radio Shack stocks them and I beleive they are fairly good quality. You could also look at Mouser.com and DigiKey.com. Sometimes it's hard to find the exact part you're looking for, but both of them carry everything.
    There is a store in Columbus Ohio called Electronic Supply Company (ESCO). I think they do mail order and I have used the micro switches that they sell. 614-263-3726
