Kawhi Leonard's beef with the Spurs was the feud nobody expected | Part One

  • It’s incredible how much Kawhi Leonard fit the San Antonio Spurs' ethos. A reclusive team-first superstar, who rarely showed emotions and only cared about hooping. San Antonio is a model franchise that’s often been called bland, boring, or as I like to say - sauceless but whatever you wanna call them, their success on the court has spoken volumes.
    On paper, Kawhi and the Spurs were a match made in heaven who appeared to be locked in with each other until the end of time. Except, the relationship that seemed to be unbreakable from the outside ultimately deteriorated behind the scenes, resulting in a messy divorce. But to truly appreciate the tenderness of this beef you have to understand that it’s arguably the most improbable feud that occurred in NBA history.

    I genuinely believe had Zaza not have stepped under Kawhi's landing and caused his injury, the Spurs could have made the Finals that year. The Spurs were on fire that season and they seemed to match up very well against the Warriors even with their three headed monster of KD, Klay and Steph. They had a 2-1 record over the Warriors during the regular season that included two blowout wins and that first game of the WCF seemed to be another big win until Zaza changed fate. A real shame honestly, I genuinely believed that season would be the start of the Spurs' championship era with Kawhi as the superstar.

      Man this takes me back into the dark years of 2008-2011 timeline and the many events and situations which wasted 4 precious years of Duncan's & Ginobili's prime and Tony Parker's peak. Firstly, starting with the veteran role players like Bruce Bowen (3 and D), Rob Horry (stretch 4), Finley etc. being washed up / finished after the 2007 title run, and it was hard to find replacements for them with the salary structure of the Spurs and always picking very late in the draft due to their continued success for a decade. The Spurs tried to get past this hurdle by investing in Euro stars Luis Scola and Tiago Splitter as they had done in the past. Unfortunately due to the Euro contract complications for Scola, they had to let go of him which was such a huge disappointment seeing how awesome Scola still in his prime had been for the Rockets in the following seasons (as he had been in International basketball for Argentina and in Europe). Similarly contract release issues resulted in the young, talented Splitter unable to come over from Europe for 3 seasons - finally making it in 2012. So all this resulted in Duncan (who was himself suffering from knee issues in 2008 after a decade of continuously deep post-season runs) being left without much support down low and the team without a defensive perimeter stopper like prime Bowen.
      Secondly, the Lakers ridiculous mid-season trade for All-Star Pau Gasol in his prime in 2008 (never seen a more blatantly one-sided trade than this one) swung the season the Lakers' way and nobody was prepared for it. Several teams complained to the NBA including Popovich about the Memphis GM's 'gift' to the Lakers for essentially a bag of chips (nobody knew what Marc Gasol would become at that time, which is often brought up as an excuse for that trade) mid-season and essentially created a huge frontline in Gasol, Bynum and Odom which no other teams except young NO Hornets (with Chandler & West) were prepared for as around this time teams were beginning to copy the Phoenix Suns playstyle and starting to go with small-ball lineups. Duncan was left to contend with this monster Lakers lineup on his own in the WCF with a hobbled knee (after a bruising 7 game semi-finals against the young Hornets duo of Chandler & West), an injured Manu Ginobili and washed up veteran role players. Man if only he had Luis Scola with him, I have no doubt Spurs would have challenged the Boston Celtics that year. Also that Marc Gasol pick to Memphis came back to haunt the Spurs in 2011.
      Thirdly, what followed in 2009-2011 was Duncan essentially playing on one good knee and the keys to the offense was given to Manu and Tony. However Ginobili's body was breaking down repeatedly (due to him refusing to stop playing for Argentina in the off-season and thereby getting injured due to lack of rest combined with his relentless playstyle), the veteran roleplayers had retired and Spurs FO could come up with no better replacement than the likes of 6-5 ft ACL-less Dejuan Blair to partner Duncan down low, while having to go up against the huge, monster or athletic frontlines of Lakers, Hornets, Mavericks, young OKC and Grizzlies in the West. Duncan was advised to shed weight (losing 20 lb from 260 lb) to relieve the pain on his one good knee yet he couldn't because of these afore-mentioned huge lineups of the playoff teams in the West or even Boston Celtics with their bangers in the East. It seemed the Spurs were about to fade away after a decade of tremendous success, yet still had Tim in his prime and Tony hitting his peak.
      Finally 2011 offseason changed everything. Pop's crew came up with the much-celebrated 'The Beautiful Game' motion-offense, which allowed Duncan to finally shed about 20 lb, made him far more springy and agile and turned back the clock to his pre-2008 days. Also Spurs FO finally landed Tiago Splitter to help Duncan down low, got the awesomely versatile Boris Diaw and hard-nosed Captain Jack from the NBA backwater teams they were being wasted at. And finally got defensive 3 and D specialists that they had been lacking for 4 years by trading for young Danny Green and yet again hoodwinking the draft by landing Kawhi Leonard.
      That 2012 team was amazing, yet there was a small wrinkle in that Spurs coaches messed around with the shooting form of Tiago Splitter (who was a good FT shooter in Europe) resulting in him losing confidence which eventually came back to bite the Spurs in the WCF against the young OKC, when down 0-2 OKC coach gave Pop a taste of his own medicine by 'hack-a-Splitter', which resulted in him being taken out of the game and Duncan yet again left alone to contend with the hugely athletic OKC frontline of Ibaka, Perkins and Durant. Also people ignore this but the Game 6 of the WCF was probably one of the worst officiated games that I've seen in 25 years next only to the Lakers-Kings Game 6 in 2002. The league just like in 2002 wanted a Durant and his big-3 OKC vs Lebron's big-3 Miami Heat in the Finals. That 2012 Spurs team was in a 20 game winning streak right until being 2-0 up in the WCF and thereafter lost 4 straight. People might remember the infamous Skip Bayliss rant after the 2012 WCF about how his Spurs were cheated against by the league's officials.
      Man when you think about it, Duncan came so close to adding to his 5 rings in 2004 (0.4 Fisher Game 5), 2006 (Manu fouling Dirk Game 7), 2012 (rigged Game 6), 2013 (Ray Allen Game 6) and even 2015 (when I felt both the Clippers and the Spurs were better than eventual finalists Warriors and Cavaliers, yet had to ridiculous face each other in that amazing 7 game 1st round series). If you think about it, Duncan and the Spurs could have had like atleast 8-10 rings with a bit of luck. I am pretty sure it will take decades for the Spurs to win another ring if ever. I miss Duncan's Spurs who were a constant in my life from 1997-2017, I haven't followed the NBA regular season since Durant landed in GSW in 2017 and Kawhi left us for the lights of LA, although I'm happy for Toronto that Pop sent him to Raptors for a season to get their lone chip.

    Another infuriating aspect of this beef (from a Spurs fan perspective) was that when SA *tried* to say ok you know what? You're hurt, let's put you on IR for the season, Kawhi's camp strung them along. They'd give the Spurs dates for his return, then blow past them and just kinda shrug. That's the context of Manu saying "we fell for it a week ago again" (12:00 mark). The team/his teammates were desperately trying to hold down the fort for a playoff seed and hoping Leonard's return would bring the relief/contention, but Leonard's camp was playing the Spurs' organization the whole time. SA tried to take him at his word and shut him down, but Kawhi didn't want that, either, just wanted to keep everyone in limbo and drag SA med staff's name through the mud in the process. Here is the thing about injuries and why teammates or media members should keep quiet unless they know more, our bodies don't respond the same way every time. Just because Parker had the same injury doesn't mean Leonard's body would respond the same way, our bodies are incredibly complicated, just because the vast majority of bodies may respond to a certain injury one way means very little for any specific person. Also, yes, I still have the jersey lol.

    • @rickyrobby8133
      @rickyrobby8133 Před rokem +13

      No he didn’t. It’s crazy that people will just ignore what people have actually said because they THINK something. Players have said for close to a DECADE that playing under Pop is really hard because of the way he talks to players. Treating them like they’re dumb.
      They ALL say it was Duncan keeping them in line because he was okay with his coaching style, it was inevitable that it’d fall apart because the likelihood the next guy after Duncan would be okay with it was low.
      You can’t treat NBA stars like they’re children and expect everyone to be okay with it. When you have an all-time great who is fine, then everyone will follow, if that isn’t there then people rebel.

He wants to be the best he can be, for sure, but worrying about others and trying to lead them to greatness (a la Tim, Tony or Manu) was/is something he wanted no part of, no matter what the rest of the NBA world thought during his Spurs days, or thinks now. He's at his best when he can be himself, and should just be judged accordingly, rather than harshly simply because he did/does not try to live up to others' expectations.
