What is important is that anyone that buys one is one less ICE vehicle driver on the road. Rather than seeing them as competitors to Tesla (who already won any race that might have been) see them as collaborators in the effort to put an end to fossil fuels.
You are sooo right! For a vast number of people it has become a contest of performance, range, price, etc. The actual objective of harm-reduction has been trampled in the rush!
Best comment by far!
Hear hear! 👏
Breaking news of "competitor" EV successes are announced in Tesla factories to cheers. Everyone is signed up to the mission - to accelerate the world to sustainable transport. Every other EV sold is a step towards that goal. Well done, Geely. The Polestar is a lovely premium brand. However, they still need to continue the endless slog towards profitability. They lose huge amounts on every car made. Polestar is still bleeding half a billion dollars per year. The more they sell the more they lose, currently.
Like your thinking.
Thanks for including Km conversions ❤
Yes, even better if Efficency is in Wh/km (5.37 km/kWh equals 186Wh/km) 9:06
How can you possibly compare this vehicle to the Tesla Model Y? It should be better just based on the 50% increase in price. Not to say it doesn't have a place in the EV market just not as a competitor to the Model Y.
Neither vehicle is on my radar, but you made me curious... Carwow has the most expensive Tesla Model Y at UKL59,990 which is exactly the same as the cheapest Polestar 4 price shown in this video, so there is a price parity of sorts. It really comes down to what a buyers preferences are in a vehicle... this is not a new situation.

Here in NZ the Model Y is from 66k and the Polestar 4 from 120k. Hmm, which to choose...
It’s ok as long as polestar can sell their much smaller supply. The dont produce millions of cars

Polestar has a great lineup of vehicles / EVs - all great designs. Great review. Now that Polestar has 3 EVs for sale in 27+ countries they should start to get more noticed.
All they need do is chop 50% off the price and they are Tesla competitors.
They are in completely different price segments. Ridiculous to compare them.
It won't sell well. The software on the Polestar is crude.. play with the software in a Tesla and then come back to the Polestar... You won't buy the car.

@@TheMadmax0609 the Tesla is all about the software, for many people it's too much. No driver's display means many won't even look at it. It's also not the best looking car. I wouldn't buy either brand new but a choice between this and Modely Y when a couple of years old I'd take this anyday.
Awesome video!
2139mm wide - I make that just a tad over 7ft wide! Here in the UK width restrictions are commonly used where lorries are not permitted, or where there are weight limits such as small bridges, and they are generally 6ft 6ins wide - so there are many places in the UK where this car just can't pass through!
thanks for pointing that out. I am in the market for a new sporty SUV, but had an E tron 55 Black edition and those width restrictions were nightmare in Essex! I will test drive and see
Lovely location. The car also looks lovely inside and out. Can't wait for battery tech to improve. At the moment the batteries are still simply too large and heavy. The price is also too large and heavy. Owning a car like this will only ever be a nice daydream for me.

The backseats look spacious! Nice to be able to control the sound from the backseat too.
Would love to test drive one even if it is a bit out of my price range.
I love that you mentioned the dog-friendliness! Surely a very important perspective for many. Regarding the Tesla MY it is important to add some context. The MY has a significantly smaller battery, and is much more efficient than the Polestar 4. You can slap on a big battery on any car to get longer range. So the extra range you get here is not a big selling point in my mind. The looks and design however, is just brilliant, as always from the Polestar team.
Such a nice car. But to experience it and listen to Alan Gogoll, chime! Absolute bliss. Great review Imogen. 👍
I think that only focusing on the car is limiting the essential information for potential buyers. The ecosystem around the car is just as important. The warranty, maintenance, reliability of the brand, future updates are important. Besides the previous items I think that the tensions between the EU, the US and China should give rise to concerns for the future, rising import taxes and perhaps withdrawal by certain brands from the US or EU can be expected. This could be a catastrophe for car owners of Chinese brands.
Polestar is Swedish and they will build some vehicles in the US and some in S. Korea, as well as Europe (IIRC), besides just China.
@@cypvh74 : Polestar is Swedish because that is the impression they want to portray. If any government is considering trade sanctions against China, it is very likely that they will know that Polestar is 69% Chinese owned.
@cypvh74 what bs. It's now a Chinese company 😊
Polestar 4 will be manufactured in South Korea in the near future. 2025 I believe.
Yes, good point. In my experience the reliability and build quality is excellent. Having to deal with Tesla service every 3 months over 4 years for warranty work is painful beyond words. The Polestar is also over the air updates. More flexibility with 3rd party apps on the Google play store. Oh and it is available in Eight Hand Drive unlike some of the competition.
Love the design, interior and all. But how can this compete with a Model Y when it is almost 1,5x the price...?
This is the Polestar version of a stretched Jaguar I-pace replacement. Nice idea. Niche market.
I love Polestar and Rivians. Though I know I'm going to love more when the day comes that the pricing is not for the rich but for the practical, common person. The prices are still ridiculously high. Still, great video and breakdown. This is one great looking car!!!
Hyundai, Kia and Renault have some lovely small EVs!
Are we just going to ignore the astronomic price differential compared to the Model Y?
Yes. And we'll pretend this is not a Chinese car as well
We are not, the model y is a cheaply made and built vehicle, and not in the same league as this.
@@kezoomeragree - let’s also start comparing Toyota corollas to BMW 3 series. Stupid comparison to compare a luxury performance car to a cheaply made Tesla

Forget the review... Firstly I am loving the BGM, also cine-photography and the host voice as well as her accent 🥰🥰
Can we please scrap WLTP?!
As soon as possible!... and a few other "Standards" as well... total misleading bloody nonsense!
As long as everyone uses the same standard, even if horribly flawed.. it will actually be equal and easy to compare the cars. So even if it's bad, it's good we all use the same standard to measure the range
That's fine when it comes to relative comparison but number of miles is not relative, it's supposed to be an absolute metric and people do care about how far their car goes in absolute and consistently measurable terms when it comes to real-world usage
You have to test to a world wide standard, because "real world range" isn't standardised. Wltp is the same standard used to calculate mpg and km/l for ICE cars as well. When was the last time you achieved your ICE vehicle's advertised fuel efficiency?
Perhaps people should factor in the YMMV thing.
"Your mileage may vary."
Not everyone drives or knows how to drive in a sensible manner, obviously.
In short it's the human element that mucks up everything.
Style and elegance in design
Nice car and very well finished. I can see some of the reason for its high price and having spent a month with a Polestar 2, it definitely is more plush than a Tesla. but the two are in different classes and shouldn't be directly compared. Just one other thing "Being sat back here" ... "Sitting back here"
I have steam coming out of my ears ever time I hear what the British have done to "their" language! The change has come about incredibly quickly... ten years ago, someone as beautifully spoken as Imogen would have been mortified to think she could slip down this slope.
Now you've got me going! Whatever happened to the inoffensive letter "T"? I don't know how to spell "Britain" nowdays? Is it now "Bri'ain"? OHHH DEAR! 🥴 😜
Thank you, good review. It is good to see other automakers adopting a rear view camera in place of a rear windscreen. Hopefully we will soon have a reliable (and automatic) method for keeping the camera lens clean. Tesla's CyberTruck attracted a lot of criticism for blocking the rear view with a tonneau cover. The difference is that Polestar put the viewing screen on the rear view mirror face so that all the familiar places to look for seeing what is behind you remain unchanged. This approach does not fit well with the Tesla philosophy that the best part is no part. and hence putting the view from the rear facing camera on the software configurable centre console.

Time to upgrade to one of the safest cars on the road then; second user Tesla Model 3's are now affordable.
Most EVs are just large volumes of air surrounded by crumple zones - you will be absolutely fine. It is the big Range Rovers and Semi Agricultural trucks you want to worry about.
You're right, it's physics. EV massively heavy and not only mash you, but you'd be in a crushed car with a damaged battery pack likely to go on fire like a blowtorch real close.
@@user-jt4fy4od9rnope, it's a massively heavy EV with a damaged battery pack I'd be worrying about...thermal runaway possible with crashed EVs
@@EVRealFacts - Battery EVs have a lower risk of fire in a crash than Petrol/Diesel, hence your worries are placed in the wrong direction. You're also confusing phone/escooter/ebike batteries with EV batteries, they are very different things; EV batteries are designed with internal barriers that reduce the risk of fire inside the cell, plus are segment into packs and encased in modules that have thermal management systems built-in; with the risk of an EV fires is 60 times less likely than a fossil fuel fire. EVs are subject to crash tests like any other vehicle, if a fire had broken out the car would not have been certified.
Weight wise EVs are somewhat similar to their like for like Petrol/Diesel counterparts (sometimes heavier, othertimes lighter for cars of the same power and spec), the weight difference occurs when comparing averages - as the average Petrol/Diesel car is a much smaller vehicle than the average EV currently (due to initial crop of EVs being larger more expensive cars to attract early adopters). This is changing now with the introduction of smaller / lower cost BEV cars, the comparison should become more like for like. EV weight is also more evenly distributed over the area of the car, whereas ICE cars concentrates the weight into the front of the car (where the engine is located), creating more of a foccused point force when hitting other vehicles and pedestrians.
A heavier car hiting a smaller car, regardless of it's fuel type, will do more damage due to inertia and kinetic energy differences involved; this is why heavier cars tend to have more safety features built in (such as brake assistance, automated emergency braking and active crumple zones to prevent, reduce or asorb the energy of the impact). Hence the OP correctly summised the situation of a small vs large car, and the reply response correctly reassured that safety features are built in (particularly in the case of EVs) to reduce the degree of impact damage. So I'm not sure what you're adding to the discussion by spreading EV non-facts (myths) and ill-informed opinions.
Rear windscreen or camera, both become coated with dirt/dust/other contaminants on daily basis. Both need cleaning daily or more often. In the case of the P4, its width will mean a mucky lean over to clean the camera. Does the P4 come with a boiler suit for daily driving or is that on the +£ options list?
Nice to watch in 50fps. Is that my end or an improvement in camers your end?
I love how she cutely drives like an older lady 🤓
On the other hand though, I definitely don’t love those touch capacitive buttons ones the steering wheel and Polestar prices.
All around, wishing Polestar lots of success. The more electric options we have on the market, the better it is for all of us. Even the ones that are against electric mobility 😊
Refocusing to watch the rearview is a pain and hard to get used to.
This. My car has an (optional thank god) electronic rear mirror. I thought that was the coolest thing - before I tried it. But with a "regular" mirror, you switch from looking ahead focused on ~infinity to the rear, _still focused on ~infinity_ and back again without ever having to re-focus.
HOWEVER when your rear-view mirror is a display, you have to re-focus from infinity to about 2 feet and then back to infinity when you look back to the road. Not only does this increase a 1/2 second glance to 3+ seconds, if you have bifocals it means you have to turn your entire head to face the mirror. Gives me a headache pretty quick.
My worry about the rear view camera is the lack of depth perception. I would think that would be a major safety concern. They need to think about a stereo camera setup and 3d screen on the rear view.
I just love the looks of these Polestar cars!
So sleek and modern
But I don't understand how is it impossible to get a back window in there?
Is it the shape or does it need more space or saftey reasons?
If it's so wide, will it fit in narrow UK parking bays?
It wouldn't even fit in my driveway...
It's 10mm( 0.1 cm ) wonder than a model Y.
From my experience around oxford.. it'll be VERY difficult to find bays that fit. Even with much thinner cars like a BMW Z4 or Mercedes E class it's a huge pain.
You should compare the base model Polestar 4 to a Model 3 Performance. They're the same price.
The little bird likes looking too
No rear window? Umm, better not have any inclement weather where you live.. 😲
That price! Wow!
At least there’s more options out there now. Gotta pay way more to be “different”, but hey, at least there’s options.. 😉
Beautiful car, however I would only consider buying it once it charges considerably faster. I'm used to charging to 80% in about 20 min and it makes a huge difference.
00:00 the Mediterranean background fits.
The shorts by the way fit into that as well...but the black top is a no-go. Who forced that upon that woman?
I'd have thought the natural competitor to this is the Jaguar iPace. Similar size, shape, price and efficiency
Great review, but I still have some reservations with this car. The rear-view camera, OK it may work, but really WHY was it not possible to include a rear window? I would rather that than the gaping great sunroof. Where I live that sun-window would just turn this into an inferno in even the mildest summer and passengers would need to lather up with sunscreen. A disastrous idea! Those 'cool' frameless side mirrors also make it impossible to fit decent clamp-on mirror extensions for when towing a camper-trailer..... or are you going to tell me that this large and powerful car cannot tow?
Looks just like the I pace jaguar.
Jag I pace meets a Tesla ... disappointing - but Chinese market styled ...
WLTP estimated range is so rosy, you have to minus 100 mile to get real estimate of the range,
EPA range is bit more close to actual range, only 50 mile of exaggeration
And to get it you have to use whole battery range when driving below 20% or above 80% damages the battery.
@@EVRealFacts - that statement is simply not true. EVs can be driven perfectly well with charge levels above 80% - this is actually the recommendation if charging above 80/90%, is to drive the car. Driving below 20% is perfectly fine also; the 20% (10% for some makes) figure is quoted as a threeshold to start charging since the 0% to 20% charger rate is slower hence if you want to save a bit of time whilst charging, then the rule of thumb is to start charging at 20%.
The only recommendation is not to leave a EV vehicle standing at 0% charge or with over 80/90% charge for long durations.
BTW. If your statement was true then petrol/diesel based Hybrid EVs and Mild Hybrids would have non-functioning batteries in no time, as these vehciles often drive with batteries below 20% and above 80% - as they don't have damaged batteries means your claim isn't the case for them either.
The present
Sounds posh yet still somehow relatable.

@@eddjordan2399 why the question mark

In the dual motor, can the front be turned off manually or is it like the 2024 P2 where it supposedly decouples automatically when cruising?
Most AWD EVs use the front (smaller) motor for cruising, not the rear. The Tesla Model 3 performance does have options in track mode to adjust the bias front and rear. However, I would think most cars automatically adjust bias.

No rear window, though? Couldn't be me. In my experience with cameras in cars, they're an amazing (and sometimes necessary) augmentation to clear glass and mirrors. They fall flat as a replacement, though.
It's a shame, though, because the rest of the vehicle is so nice~
The first person to cut a hole in that trunk lid and install a RV window gets the prize LOL.

Polestar covered this in their own video. I don't remember the specifics but the way they've designed it, it stays clear both in rain and snow.
Totally agree. Any camera can’t give you depth or indeterminate focus. While the overall look is pleasing, I find it hard to understand why they took out the rear window. The flow line isn’t so different to an I-pace.I feel this is shock and awe tactic, not a design description.

Imogen may be the only female car reviewer on CZcams that I don't find annoying. I don't think it's a sexist thing, because I find many of the men annoying too.
Where the car is concerned, it's my favourite Polestar design, but I'd have to see it in person to be convinced that these materials are premium. To be fair, you'd need to see how materials feel and how they hold up over the life of the vehicle to really have a good idea about them.
Whilst this does look fairly appealing as my next car, the other car that I'm considering is a Tesla Model 3 Long Range Dual Motor, which is £17k cheaper, more boot space, more frunk space. The advantages of the Polestar, from my perspective, it looks nicer, I'd rather have a driver's display and I prefer to use Android Auto and I assume it has more passenger space, although being the driver that doesn't affect me too much.
Performance, range and charging are similar, so I think for my needs the Tesla wins, but I won't be changing my car for a year, so I guess we'll see what happens between now and then.
9:05 the converted consumption figures would be more useful in Wh/km 🙏
Otherwise, loved the review. The car seems quite low, given that Imogen is slightly taller 🤭
Agreed. Should work out to about 186Wh/km
Those doors are a deal breaker
In China... The price of this is said to be in the 30 - 40k price. The eurozone may place high tariffs.
Other than the fact that a car with a 0-100km/h time of 7 seconds doesn’t feel under powered at low speed (who would have thought?), what’s the car like to drive? Is it comfortable? How does it handle? What’s the steering like? A car is more than boot space and range, especially in the more premium price range.
Sounds like you need a lot of spare money for this luxury - Polestar need Geely’s deep pockets!
Did they change the title?! 😂
Why after all these years these headlines? The Polestar better be good. It's starting price is 50% higher than the Model Y (67 vs 45k€). If it sells anything relevant it will be a surprise.
Tesla navigation software. Nobody can beat it
This is a way better car.@@kelsey_roy
The adapters are not that expensive ($200-250) range for nacs to CCS, and some superchargers have the adapters built in. That said the cable length can be a bit awkward at the moment as they’re still only set up for Teslas
@@mikenielsen3971are you guys educated??? Mass market Suzuki hatchbacks handle better than some Teslas and you guys want to believe that Tesla is something Luxury???
@@kelsey_royexcept Apple, Google, Waze, just about anyone. Tesla routing is horrible.
She's a beauty no doubt about it.
What .....and the cars quite nice......!?!!
Recent data shows 77% car ownership in UK households and dog ownership is 25% of the 20 million households. Surveys show that a significant majority of dog owners drive with their dogs - vets, parks, holidays and everyday errands. So if it is assumed that 70-80% of dog owning car households drive regularly with their dogs then 70% amounts to around 3.5 million car owners driving regularly with their dogs. Given, because of regulation, safety and comfort the boot of a car is the best place for a dog and for the safety and convenience of passengers, then the Polestar 4 with no rear window is clearly unsuitable for caring dog owners - as are many of current EV’s of any price bracket. Is this a cultural thing? Where many new EVs being designed and produced come from countries where dogs do not hold the same respect as here in the UK? I would suggest 3.5 million potential dog owners looking for a suitable car is a substantial market being ignored or not thought about. I personally like the Polstar 4 and can afford it, but like many, the well being of my black Labrador comes first. They are an equal, integral part of my family that perhaps non-dog owners and car designers just don’t understand. Pity.
It is not good for the environment to own pets. We all have to make sacrifices as the world burns.
We have Polestar 2, which I believe has smaller trunk that P4. And 2 German Shepherds. They both very happily travel in P2.
Actually for me no rear windows would be a small plus as there probably would be less barking :).
Depends of course a lot what kind of dog you have but I am sure German Shepherds would have no issue to travel in P4 (of course you need to open that small flap to passanger compartment so they would not be in total darkness).
But not saying big station wagon would not be better...
Looks like a Kia EV6 long base.. a luxury rear seat upgrade.
Should be compared with the Macan as she said in the end and “good value luxury” summed it up quite well I think. Nothing wrong with Chinese made gear. Often superb quality. Don’t see why people keep mentioning that
Because of badge snobbery. Why do people pay a premium for German made auto - they are nothing special these days, especially the EV variants.
I don’t get the lack of rear screen. There’s a metal panel at the rear. This could just be glass. PoleStar drivetrains are not as efficient as a Tesla or Hyundai Kia.
Flush door handles and charge port needs some sort of illumination. As someone who lives with a ev that doesn't have this, I can tell you it's very annoying. Not sure how it might work exactly but port would be easy to turn on a light when open.
My Kia Niro EV has a light in the charge port... it seems to have a sensor that makes it turn off just as I approach with the charge plug! 😡 🤬
Camera side mirrors are just about OK but rear view mirror would be awkward viewing, especially as one gets older or wears glasses. The focus point, instead of being similar to the view through the windscreen is
Parking impressions without the rear window? Please come and test it in canadian winter with all cameras obstructed by slush.
When you having driving lessons and they cover parallel parking you have to turn and look out the back windscreen. So if you can't do a driving test in this car shouldn't be road legal?
Its a iPace. Shame it is too wide to park in the UK
