Luka is not that bad defensively, indeed he is one of the best post up defenders in league. He has shown great progress lately.

Noone who "doesn try" can be that good and now especially with the Mavs acquiring better players and Kyrie coming back from injury, Luka doesnt need to have the ball every posession and can focus more on defense making him more than solid. The 6 Game winning streak with Kyrie back has been an amzing show of his defensive capabilities.

It feels like Hoopers Ln. hasn't watched the Mavericks or Luka all year. Luka is in the top 10 for multiple defensive metrics and is 7th in the league in steals.
I wud have agreed with that ending if this was last season or any season before. But luka has taken a huge leap defensively this season he’s among the best in iso and post up defence in the league. He’s had high usage only when needed see the difference in his stats with and without kyrie playing this season. What does jokic do defensively as much he has a big body and gets a lot of boards i don’t see people talking about jokic lack of athleticism in the defensive end.
SGA has been in the league just as long and was a nobody until last season. Yet, the casuals are acting like he’s been there with Luka the whole time and somehow has surpassed him😂

Luka has had some crazy growth this year and for me he is the clear MVP, with the 3rd most injured team with lower quality team members he has carried the Mavs to their current position which would be drastically lower than what it is. SGA is a fantastic player, but he is 3rd after Jokic in my estimation.
You're wrong about Lukas defense and the roster around him. Time will prove that. His usage rate is why kyrie is so important to the team.

This video just seems kinda outdated. Check out Luka’s recent defensive numbers. They are scary good. And the current Mavs team after the trades - doesn’t look like he’s hard to play with.
There are a lot of videos about Luka on CZcams. So you better get it right if you want to stand out. Saying he is useless on one side of the ball while playing his best defense this season shows you don't watch his games. Or at least not the defensive side.
You're tripping calling Luka useless on defense! 7th in Steals, 29th in Blocks and Steals combined (6th amongst Guards). Luka ranks 1st in the NBA in post-defense, and 10th in the NBA in iso-defense.
On Christmas day, Luka joined Anthony Davis as the only two players in NBA history to have a game where they recorded at least 50 Points, at least 4 Steals, and at least 3 Blocks. This game netted Doncic the 19th highest gamescore ever, and he is the only player in NBA history with 3 games that rank in the top-20 all time in gamescore.

@@PhilTheThrillConner Being a team that has as much or a bit as much injuries as the grizzlies while still being in the mix of 8-4 in the west conference is wild. If Mavs get to 4-5th, and OKC drops to 3 or 6th then its easy for luka mvp.

If anything this is a solid defensive season for luka. If you've been watching him before, you really enjoy the effort he is putting now
It's not that Luka is not trying, he's probably just not that good of a defender so he spends most of his energy in attack, which is a smart decision in his case. This year however he has improved a lot, losing weight helped with his conditioning, he is now doing more defensively and he is better at doing it. At this point I believe he is at least an average defender in the NBA if not more, sadly the bad defender reputation will likely follow him for the rest of his career no matter how much he improves defensively.
Regardless, if you been watching the mavs this year, luka is a lot more locked in on defense, and complaining less to the refs, compared to other years.
We will see what they say if the Mavericks keep their winning streak up. They could easily rise 2-3 places in the standings before the end of the season. The new guys they added recently are making a huge impact on their success.

Also, as long as people equate the artistry and skill level of individual players according to team success, I believe we’ll overlook generational talent. Shaq comment is just a compliment to SGA for his hardwork. But team involvement? Luka statistics of triple double with high scoring and high assist than SGA is a bias comparison by Shaq. Among players who had to défend ISO, with 500+ possession this year, Luka IS one of the best ISO Defender. Maybe not top 5, but with 0,84ppp allowed, IS one the best among thé stars. For exemple, hé does better than Jaylen Brown who IS a great défensive player.
