Epilepsy is a group of neurological diseases characterized by recurrent seizures. Seizures happen as a result of a sudden surge in the brain’s electrical activities. Depending on which part of the brain is affected, a seizure may manifest as loss of awareness, unusual behaviors or sensations, uncontrollable movements or loss of consciousness. The brain is a complex network of billions of neurons. Neurons can be excitatory or inhibitory. Excitatory neurons stimulate others to fire action potentials and transmit electrical messages, while inhibitory neurons SUPPRESS this process, preventing EXCESSIVE firing. A balance between excitation and inhibition is essential for normal brain functions. In epilepsy, there is an UP-regulation of excitation and/or DOWN-regulation of inhibition, causing lots of neurons to fire SYNCHRONOUSLY at the same time. If this abnormal electrical surge happens within a limited area of the brain, it causes PARTIAL or FOCAL seizures. If the entire brain is involved, GENERALIZED seizures will result. Partial seizures subdivide further to: - Simple partial: - Complex partial Generalized seizures subdivide further to: - Absence seizures: - Tonic seizures - Atonic seizures, drop attacks - Clonic seizures - Myoclonic seizures - The most common and also most dramatic are tonic-clonic seizures, also known as convulsive seizures, which are combinations of muscle stiffening and jerking. This type is what most people relate to when they think of a seizure. It also involves sudden loss of consciousness and sometimes loss of bladder control. A tonic-clonic seizure that lasts longer than 5min requires immediate medical treatment. Epilepsy may develop as a result of a brain injury, tumor, stroke, previous infection or a birth defect. Generalized seizures that start in childhood are likely to involve genetic factors. Epilepsy due to a single gene mutation is rare. More often, an interaction of multiple genes and environmental factors is responsible. Hundreds genes have been implicated. Examples include genes encoding for GABA receptors - major components of the inhibitory circuit, and ion channels. Many genetic disorders that cause brain abnormalities or metabolic conditions have epilepsy as a primary symptom. The cause of epilepsy is unknown in about half of cases. Diagnosis is based on observation of symptoms, medical history, and an electroencephalogram, or EEG, to look for abnormal brain waves. An EEG may also help in differentiating between partial and generalized seizures. Genetic testing maybe helpful when genetic factors are suspected. There is no cure for epilepsy but various treatments are available to control seizures. Medication successfully controls seizures for about 70% of cases. Many anti-epileptic drugs are available which target sodium channels, GABA receptors, and other components involved in neuronal transmission. Different medicines help with different types of seizures. Patients may need to try several drugs to find the most suitable. Dietary therapy: ketogenic diet has been shown to reduce or prevent seizures in many children whose seizures could not be controlled with medication. Ketogenic diet is a special high-fat, low-carbohydrate diet that must be prescribed and followed strictly. With this diet, the body uses fat as the major source of energy instead of carbohydrates. The reason why this helps control epilepsy is unclear. Nerve stimulation therapies such as vagus nerve stimulation in which a device placed under the skin is programmed to stimulate the vagus nerve at a certain rate. The device acts as a pacemaker for the brain. The underlying mechanism is poorly understood but it has been shown to reduce seizures significantly. Finally, a surgery may be performed to remove part of the brain that causes seizure. This is usually done when tests show that seizures are originated from a small area that does not have any vital function.

My girlfriend is having these. She even has anxiety attacks. I feel so helpless when i see her like this. I try to check on her meditations and medicine daily but sometimes she skips them and after some times it get worse. It pains me and makes me think that i can't do anything for the person i love. She avoids me thinking I'm just wasting myself on her and I'm not able to make her understand that we are in this together , no matter what. Fighting it psychologically is an another fight. What I have learned As a Epilepsy Patient
    • It’s hard to bear, but we cannot lose hope to get healthy one day. • We can reduce ratio of attacks, if we follow doctor’s advices in our daily routine. • We have to spread awareness about epilepsy, and show the world that nothing is impossible in life. • There are many people who are suffering from epilepsy, but they are living their lives very happily. • It’s a continuous struggle to keep Yourself focus on your goals rather then worry about your disease.

Seizures can affect us any moment.. suddenly with out any warning...even though we are not epileptic patient.. from my experience... I have experienced earlier some times it triggers Because of various factors like sleepless, pressure shot up , and stress , some light beams etc ... My was an unexpected ... While driving the car 🚗 to school I felt severe & heavy headache then I used a baam for my headache then reached my class and sat on Teachers chair in Between I lyied down also because excess headache .. that was a Christmas 🎄 celebration time class is full of noise they are crazy about their Christmas competition... But I want to take class . as the noise is terrible I shout at them with short temper & also I brust out with anger .. as soon as my Blood pressure becomes highest peak then my body Becomes very weak then my hands shakes a little & I Bend & fell to corner of the class then slowly drop down with Both eye's upwards & becames half blank out...repeat Nagyastisum continuously...🙄 😵 💫 💥🧠⚡ then starts seize my whole body my head shakes as yes no like that .. my hair becomes scattered then I dropped down to the floor ... my saree moved from my chest that makes my breast & Deep Round Navel pit exposed as
yu seize Me also seize then huge number of bubbles came out my mouth... With nausea sound ekk ekk .. as usual as vomitting ...They said Teacher 👩‍🏫 is Vomitting Bubbles & she is shaking slowly.... Also I sweating well while shaking this makes wet on Blouse & makes visibles With exposing my Breast & navel ... But I don't feel shame it's because of this fits I shake ... While that some children from class tapped my sweated face and Belly that moment I turned my face to side ... no response but I can hear everything.. but I can't responds or react ... To it then teacher from next class came and done the same but the extreme noise makes shakes violent... Then she Let all children out of the class to main hall then she said we are doing 1 st aid to yur Teacher 👩‍🏫 so please keep Quite & go from this surroundings ... She Let them out because my hus smooths me by Floating his hands from head to Feets 👣 that moment some colleagues gave An 🗝️ tightly to my ✋ ...that proves the 🗝️ using remedies Is a False things .... As the Jerkings last for 3 seconds my hus came near me and Takes my head and removes the scattered hair & placed on his Lap that moment form and froth Bubbles falls on his Lap . Then he rubbed my Face , ✋ ,chest , Navel pit Till to my 👣 and makes me Lye on the 🛏️ Bench ... After 15 seconds I regins my Full consiousnes.... That moment hubby gaves me water Bit by bit .. & says why are you always Bursting out in short temper .. it's makes yu this so control yur anger ... Avoid pressure shot up.
.so careful... Same things repeated once a while between while taking class 🙄😵🙂🙂🙂 but I didn't fear that situations .... 2:08

My sister has been having seizure-like symptoms for over a year. She was scheduled to go for monitoring on an epilepsy unit in the hospital because her EEG and 72-hour EEG came back abnormal/inconclusive. It’s a good thing she went for the monitoring in the hospital because that day, she went into full-blown status epilepticus. She was intubated for a week and it was the most helpless I’ve ever felt in my entire life because there was nothing I could do for her. She’s home now, but I’m terrified for her.

To everyone going through this, you're not alone. Find a good doctor who'll listen to you and help you find the right meds and it'll get better. To everyone with a loved one or friend with epilepsy, I know how hard it is to have to watch someone you care about having a seizure knowing that there's nothing you can do but just watch and make sure they don't hurt themselves. I’ve been diagnosed with Epilepsy 2 years ago and I haven’t had any seizures since. I’m still on the edge as I’m not sure if this was a sort of episode of my life that is behind me or at any moment it can happen again. Dr tried to prescribe me Keppra but that first night I took it it gave me a high fever and chills and then dr prescribed me Oxcarbenzipine and it’s as if I never had any seizures. Please advocate for yourselves and stay strong. Also don’t get mad at the person who has had seizures if they crack a joke, coping mech, some of us are not technically there to witness😂😂

My brother is in treatment for convulsive seizures. He has only had two. The first one at 17 and the second one was less than a month ago at the age of 20. He had skipped a few days of meds but at least I was able to act quickly and call emergencies so they could assist us and send an ambulance. Luckily it wasn't more than that and a light concussion with a few bruises. These videos help me understand more the mechanics of what happens. It's still terrifying to see someone go through that, especially a family member so close to you like a sibling. I can say I am traumatized but more ready to act

My oldest (10) did an amazing job and told my other daughter (also 10) to run and get grandma and she herself called 911 come to find out I had a grand Mal seizure. I lost consciousness and fell and injured my neck and arm and leg. I came to to 5 paramedics in my living room and had no clue what was going on. I'm still confused. Idk how I even got to the living room. 😐 scariest thing that's ever happened and I wish my kids didn't have to see it. My 7 year old ran and cried when he saw me convulsing and he said stuff was coming out of my mouth. Breaks my heart. I gave twin babies too and I'm so scared that I'll be holding one of them and this will happen again. The soonest I can get in to see a Dr is October.

I am suffering from epilepsy seizures for nearly 15 years (age 23)
    - What happens before during and after the seizures......
Before the onset of seizure I somehow know that i am going to have one but in most cases i get know in the last 5-15 seconds so i have a low time frame to respond so i have to be careful when i am riding a bike driving a car swimming or other activities alone
During the seizure I usually fall down instantly most of the times i hit my head and there is always a very serious injury on my tongue due to biting while having seizure
i wake up with a pain in my head and bloody tongue and unable to eat salty/spicy for few days (thank god the tongue is the strongest muscle ) first sentence after getting consciousness is always HOW did i get here ?
I usually regain consciousness between 1hour-2hour
I have MEMORY loss of the events that occurred 6-12 hours before the onset of seizure and i only have small flashes of the events
Let me briefly elaborate the feeling of a seizure
First thing is i start to forget where i am or what i am doing i dont feel my hands and legs my minds slowly goes blank and i dont know if i am waking up again

    Here's my story:
I was 16 when I first had a blank episode . To elaborate: I was doing my physics homework and all of a sudden (without any prior feeling) I just went blank ,like I didn't exist for that particular moment ,then slowly when I started to get conscious of my surroundings I was really confused like what happened...., I didn't mention it to anyone....then such epidodes kept on repeating only that I was now able to tell when is the next one going to come on because I got signs that I was about to blank out and it was such a strange deja vu kind of feeling and my surroundings seemed strange too, I would go blank then come back forgetting what I had done the entire day, but slowly slowly remembering it on trying, this used to happen 4 to 5 times a day and 2 to 3 times a week and by the end of day I would be dead of tiredness and headache...,I didn't go to doctors because 1) I didn't know how to describe that absolutely strange feeling and 2) I am scared of them
So the matter remained undiagnosed for more than 2 years and I continued to suffer trying to find answers from people and God
Then I joined college, however classes were online, the entire week I had really overworked myself eating less etc and I was feeling little anxious, irritated and restless before I went to sleep . The next morning I woke up to find my mother and sister sitting beside my bed asking if I was fine, I saw the watch and just realised it was 7:50 am in the morning, I am never that late , but I asked them what happened, so what I came to know is my sister who sleeps with me called for my mother and my mom said I was shivering violently so she asked was I feeling cold , abd my sister said it looked like a seizure(I was seizing badly enough to shake the bed which woke her up) they seemed scared but I hadn't realised exactly what was going on , I felt confused and dazed and everything seemed new and unfamiliar all the day my mother even asked what's on my tongue, I said I burned it while drinking coffee ,so then I went to bathroom and got ready thinking how can I have seizure it must be something else, then checked my tongue in the mirror and saw it cut into deep lines, I was like oh..I really have bitten my tongue ,my lips had gone blue too and my entire body muscles ached so much like I had done some heavy strenous physical activity and there was lactic acid accumulation all over and the entire day I felt sleepy ...Obviously my mom then took me to doctor who referred me to neurologist to go within 2 days, I had no further attacks since that one, I got nervous and started researching on net about epilepsy when I came across the types and when I read the description of complex partial seizures I was like this is it , all my symptoms match , atleast now i have words to describe to any doctor, (i didn't know those blank episodes were periods of unconsciousness) however I didn't diagnose myself I found courage and told neurologist whatever happened in whichever words i could. She immediately started me on Levera. But my mom wasn't ready to believe it ,because it was just one episode of seizure and I was also later found to be covid positive that time but asymptomatic, so as Ordered MRI came back normal and EEG too was normal, but I was having issues with levera so went to another doctor so Sir gave me Sodium valproate and Breveteracitam (which I currently am on but I still have those blank episodes though with reduced frequency) but still for hearts satisfaction and proper diagnosis we went to another really reputed and trusted govt hospital , there too MRI and EEG both came normal, and now I am dying within insides with the fear I always carried people believe I am faking it or it's psychological ,but I am not, I really don't make all this up and I myself don't know what's happening, what to do if no one trusts me..
If anyone has any advice I would be happy to have it.

    I have simply partial seizures.
It usually happens when I am tiered during the day from work. And slowly drifting into a nap. And when I’m drunk or day drinking and I get sleepy. I am aware of everything happening in my body. I can’t snap out of it as much as I try. My lips jerk. I begin to drool , I feel like I’m going to have a heart attack and I panic in my consciousness l. And my breathing begins to slow down. It’s happened like 5 plus times..

Well my son was diagnosed June 2021. He had a major seizure. He fell flat sideways onto his side and broke his collarbone. I heard the collapse and was only feet away from where it happened in Ruston to find him sitting up on the floor unconscious with foam coming from his mouth. I called 911, they arrived and admitted him in the hospital period where he suffered another seizure. The second day, he was delirious and the doctors couldn’t understand the cause. By the third day he was diagnosed with
Rhabdomyolysis. When he broke his collarbone and stretched and damaged his muscles, it released the toxin into his bloodstream, his organs were shutting down. They were able to treat him and the broken collarbone and he was in intensive care for five days. This was his first ever seizure! He suffered three seizures while in the hospital! He is a healthy young man that does not drink smoke or do drugs. Seizures do run in our family on both sides. Two different types of medication to find the one that seems to be working for him.
So God bless everyone on here I hope this information helps and I really appreciate this video!

Been searching through the net for answers, I was sitting in my chair just enjoying my time watching TikTok when my brain felt like it was going sleep and light mode. I felt like I was disassociating really badly, similar to drunk and or dreaming but much more aware. My whole torso started to lean and eventually fall, my limbs worked and I used all the energy I could muster to stand up but my torso felt like deadweight and caused me to fall back into my seat. I felt some sudden jerk and I started getting a mild headache, similar to after I disassociated for a short period of time. Torso still felt heavy but not as heavy as it was before, I was so confused. I walked it off thankfully, if it were worse I probably would have injured myself because I was alone in my room when it happened.

I recently got diagnosed with epilepsy. Its wierd that I knew I was sick for about 3 years prior this but only got a siezure just before my diagnosis. My first episode 3 years ago happened in my sleep while i was napping outside the house due to heat, I ragained consciousness in another yard about 5 houses away and didn't know how i got there. A similar occurance happened a year later where i just lost consciousness and apparently spoke senseless stuff, which i didnt remember after the episodes. The last time was the actual siezure, apparently it started like the other two auras but ended with an intense and long seizure. I regained consciousness in hospital. Im currently on anti-seizure drugs and cant really say if they work because this usually happens once a year so im just hoping. Its such a scary and random sickness

Now I don’t have epilepsy (at least I don’t think I do) but I have had this thing for a couple years where sometimes when I am walking I lose consciousness for half a second where everything just disappears in my brain and I can’t control anything, but since it’s only for that short of a time I am able to catch myself right before I fall, I think it might just be a sensory overload, for example if I am in nature or taking a walk in the park.

  • @labradorableretriever4490

I started having seizures in 2007. I thought it was a panic attack because the only seizure I knew of at the time was a grand Mal seizure. I was arguing with my mother about it. Yeah I know it’s stupid because she’s a nurse. I have complex partial seizures. Epilepsy is common for people with a rare eye condition from birth called optic nerve hypoplasia. It carries several hormonal issues And minor or moderate brain abnormalities. It takes a long time for anything to work properly. One of the keys I needed to reduce. Mine was a hormonal implant due to constant irregular menstrual cycles. Four of them in one month example last year in August. Anywhere from Thursday to Sunday of each August weekend around one up to three seizures per weekend. This was when the Nexplanon implant was wearing off and I needed to get a new one. Walking around aimlessly, while unconscious sounded scary when friends and family members would describe this to me. Also, because of my severely low vision, I’ve had guide dogs. Although not seizure trained my current one, and my previous one both picked up on it very quickly and have their own Methods of getting me somewhere safe to sit, loud whining and anything else described by strangers or friends. For several years I was against wearing a custom made bracelet, but I finally decided to do that a few years ago. It’s really creepy when you’re tired and somebody talking to you sounds like a distorted voice in a dream, after being unconscious and then disoriented. Anyways. You all hang in there and hopefully you can find a helpful treatment of your specific case. Have a nice day/night wherever you are in the world.
