thank you so much for posting this video .ive watched litrally 100's on setting up a machine and tuneing .but you made it quite clear on the basics . i always wondered why my machine wasnt like the ones i watched , and now i know . volts - spaces meant nothing . ive tried your way and now im tattooing and filling so much better and QUIETER than ever b4 . thanx to your instuctions . btw im a scratcher and only do myself never anyone else . cheers mate . many thanx . from dave from australia
Informative as always, I usually run 2 machines. A rotary for outlining, and a conventional for color. I just like the sound and the mechanicalness, anyway don't forget to inform the masses on ink quality. One can't skimp on ink/pigment. I've seen tattoo's done with cheap ink and told how they bled. So yea, picking the right ink mixed with perfect form could lead to a quality tattoo they can enjoy for years.
I just saw your other video where you explain the use and purpose of different types of tattoo needles. It was very helpful. Thanks for all the great videos and for taking the time to answer my question!
@tattootraining thank to you & the info you provide in your vids my machines are running @ there best, i wish i had question for you to aswer but iv watched all vids a few times over &and they've aswered every question i have had about tattooing so far, i hope to see more in the upcoming future, excellant work man
Thank the tattoo gods for your vid u answered a question that has 1 of my customers tats fading and I had no clue as it hasn't happened to any other clients. Yay for online advice and experienced dudes who will share their knowledge :)
oh no of course not, I'm sorry if it came across that way! I was just curious to see some of your work, I'm personally a big fan of your video's and have learned A LOT from watching them. I'm extremely grateful you take the time and effort to share this information with people like myself, especially seeing a lot of the rude comments you get. anyway's hope that clears some things up. thanks for the reply! take care mate and keep up the good work!
kool idea, def. will try that..I had to talk someone out of a white tiger tattoo a few weeks ago too I wont do an all white tatt, not worth going through all that to have it fade out n a few years ....thanks for answering me on that..keep up the vids, love them :)
Ok I've always never used liner ink to do solid black because it's just a general rule I always knew from the beginning and never questioned it because of my sources. But I've always been curious....What happens when you use liner ink to color in solid black? Just wondering....
@MrJohnnyINK yes it will bog a small bit because it is a long stroke regardless of a mag or round , , but you dont want it to not put in the ink if it bogs too much because it is not hitting hard enough then it will not go in and you will overwork it trying to get it in ,
@MarLouie1 what is the gap distance and spring tension ? A STILL image is%50 , A SLOW WAVE doesnt start until is %45 or more , (a single fluorescent light makes it easier to see more detail in movement)
sounds like a good idea . longer strokes take more voltage and lower current 1 to 1.5 is goind to take more than if it was a 2 amp box too . it takes what it takes .
@Zombieblake83 start low and turn up to the point it starts to tap the front coil , it has a short gap so it already has more power so when it starts taping the front coil it shouldnt bog down , if it does then add a little more , liners dont bog down
@coyalino what do you mean "too painful" compared to what ? it hurts you will get used to it , as long as the needle is not bent and the power is not excessive it is as good as it gets
I have recently started tattooing and I work on myself and boyfriend. I'm getting better but still have trouble packing color yet my greywash shading comes out great. Do you know why this is?
@1stdarknightslayer you set a nickle or a hair more of needle past the tip , you set the power so it will only reduce the amount of needle by a dime or less , not so it reduces it so there is only a dime left . it needs to have more than a dimes worth after you apply pressure to the needle ( or the nipple).
Hi great video... thank you! I have a question. When theres a double nickle gap setup between the contact scew and the front spring on a tattoo machine. What is the proper way to set the tube. Do you adjust it to where you have 1 or 2 nickles worth of needle sticking out the tip of the tube, when pressing the A bar down?
@daonenonlydj the issue of not laying ink with a liner ? usually not so much a problem getting a solid hit with a liner as most mean short stroke when they say liner , there are other factors suchj as proper ink , ( useing thinner liner ink not coloring ink ) and holding a 45 deg angles . are other possibilities ,
What brand of black ink do you feel is best, i just ordered intenze zuper black for outlining, was that a good choice?i heard it is extremely thick and very difficult to wipe and that blotting should be used when dealing with it, and what label for shading works best for you? look forward to hearing your expertise on the matter. Thanks
Great job on the videos! Have a question...When i set up my color machine it doesn't flutter like yours and Joshua Carlton's machine. Am I doing something wrong? My color tattoos aren't as bright as I think they should when they heal and I have to keep going over it after it heals in order for the color to stay... Is it my machine set up?
THAT IS REALLY HELPFULL... THANKS A LOT BRO!!! CUZ I'M BARELY STARTING TO TATTOO, AND SO FAR I HAVEN'T DO ANY COLOR YET, BUT IF I DO, I'LL KNOW WHAT TO DO PEACE OUT... AND THANX AGAIN
i drill a dimple in the armature and put RTV silicone in the hole so only a small bit protrudes, if you put stuff on the armature it will eventually loosen and your machine will go haywire , now i use a semi hard coating on the core
i only use small rounds for filling tighter spaces 9 round is about it , woven mags are all i use for general color / shading. 7 mag #10 small shading 9mag long taper #12 needle small color mag the needle size it a important factor black is a color not a shade so solid black is done with #12 longtaper a 11mag #12 1112 is a good general coloring needle but i go over that in my needle vid a bit more
@Ricky039 other than using good ink like eternal ,...not mutch . white is translucent and will not show bold like other colors. depending on skin color it will very . i suggest you not use pure white adding a touch of light blue or what ever color would be in the art as a reflecting light source color will look natural and show better
@TATTOOTRAINING The gap distances is slightly more than 2 nickles and is running a duty cycle of %35-%40. Spring tension is between 300g and 350g. I have 3 machines I'm trying this with and they all fall between these ranges. And they all usually start at 11 volts. Also I don't know if it's the machines I'm using but sometimes when I'm tuning the machines and I just touch or hold the vice grip without a needle and tube and it bogs down the machine. What's up with that? Thanks!
Just did a tattoo a few nights ago, and wanted to see how my outlining ink would fill... not a good idea... lol the outlining ink is very liquidy, and does not pack well like real color, but it runs great for the faster moving tight group of a round liner when running an outline.
@vespinozalanyi no because the skin makes the needle back down a bit so only about a dime or so can drive in , and the taper of a needle is all you need to go in . this is why you dont want too much power
Hi... Is there a difference between a standard magnum vs a standard round magnum needle when packing solid black. Which works best in your opinion and which would you recommend for solid black work?
@vazartz you dont just adjust a machine to use as a liner or whatever, you assemble it , tune it for what your going to use it for. you dont just turn a screw and call it a liner, see some other videos i have , lick the video listing how each machine is set up according to springs their tensions coils capacitor , stroke and so on.
@91zone ah yes i will be covering that in a few days , i put a small dab of blue RTV silicone on the armature bar , but if you want the real deal they are now available from the makers of the welker machines at eternaltattoosupply
i have done a few things , this bumper method is actually the most technical as you have to drill a small dimple into the armature and fill it with RTV silicone . now there are other ways like slipping a 1/4" band of heat shrink tube over armature ( not my favorite) , or just brush on some nail polish enamel , let it dry at least 5 minutes then press it down , lightly at first to see if it is dry , then press hard to level it , takes out the sharp metal to metal sound
@tat2edsinner it doesnt matter , the power supply readout is all useless. you cannot adjust a machine with a power supply other than the voltage , voltage is all that matters and what the voltage is depends on a number of factors so asking anyone what number something is at really is pointless. the hertz comes from your cap and voltage , you adjust the voltage based on the hit needed for any given set up so again saying a machine runs at X is not relevant to everyone
not a comment but a question ,I have always had trouble with white ink, never seems to go well for..does ok sometimes on something small like a claw or teeth but much bigger doesnt do well at all..what can I do so it works better ? thanks
@stinkygusto time ? take all you can , better to do a second sitting if need be. and voltage has nothing to do with speed. of the machine . its to make the hit harder. have you ever heard about how to hold the stretch of the skin ? this will help also . 3 point stretch . so you FEEL the vibration of the needle in the stretcher hand ?
i did a tatt today with moms outlining and i still had problems like the needle penetrates fine but ink wont .. it either wont come out at all or very little at that
well kinda goes without saying , sorta, anything past the shoulder of the needle and it get dangerous, long tapers let you use the taper for lighter or darker when shading , but go too deep with a liner and damaging blow outs result .
first dont fill with a liner, ITS A LINER, use a ROUND even if its small a round is a loose configuration and a liner is tight and will che wit up . also when you do lettering you use a longer stroke (4mm gap) ,sculpting liner not a single pass liner, so when doing script use a 7 round on a sculpting liner machine setting , voltage is all dependent on the gap and the tension of the springs if the machine is not tuned properly you will need more voltage , 2 days A&D then lubraderm
their is 2 different uses for black ink outlines and color , drawing inks or liner inks are for lines it is thin and flows , color ink in more think and dense for filling in like any other color , zuper black . triple black are coloring inks see this video on what blacks inks are about watch?v=292I54g4bRI
why ? i mean i am about to do a little work for a video im making but its not about my work its about another subject, i dont post stuff for the same reason i dont show my face, its about the information , im just asking because are you thinking you need to judge my information based on my tattooing ?
I am scratcher, but even I know your soppose to get it correct the first time. 2nd and third pass? it just tears the skin up and ussually will make it more bloppy
@onethatsnottaken rotaries are not for beginners , as they dont have the give of a coil machine . they can be used but in a limited way . look at the neuma hybrid it can run on a power supply , but really most people who want a rotary are just INTIMIDATED BY THE COIL , dont be
same answer what ever it takes,... and the power unite for rotary is not the same as coils , if you use a power unite for a coil machine you will burn it out fast , the thing about rotary they dont do color packing like coils , you have to get a bishop or neotat that has a long stroke , generic rotaries are all one stroke length
the biggest issue with beginners and liners is the machine tuning. most single pass liners run way to fast for a beginner, your hand speed must be in time with machine cycle fast machine means fast hand movement , if you move hand slow because your nervous and machine runs fast you chew it up. a bigger gap slows it down to around 135HZ . other than that see my video "proper single pass outline form"
no a liner is a totally different machine, the gap is small so a liner always runs fast and strong , the thing about liners when you are a beginner is the machines runs fast and usual the hand moves slow bad combination , a slightly bigger gap will slow it down 3.5mm, a nickle of needle showing past the tip so you can see the depth , dont ride the tube, if machine is tuned 6 or 7 volts will be plenty , if lines are week or dotted your too shallow and/or no stretch
thank you so much for posting this video .ive watched litrally 100's on setting up a machine and tuneing .but you made it quite clear on the basics . i always wondered why my machine wasnt like the ones i watched , and now i know . volts - spaces meant nothing . ive tried your way and now im tattooing and filling so much better and QUIETER than ever b4 . thanx to your instuctions . btw im a scratcher and only do myself never anyone else . cheers mate . many thanx . from dave from australia

@LivingInLynn yes i have mentioned it a few times , take some blue RTV silicone and put a thin dab on the underside of the A bar over the front coil

thanks very informative, does this apply to liners too? do you have any advice on how to set up liners.
I've been having problems in this area & hoped you would cover it. Thanks for all your help man! Any thoughts on rotary machines?
nice videos and well spoken thankyou
thnx for the bumper idea, works perfect

Very helpful videos!!
what would happen if you dont ark your needles before using them like can it mess up the tattoo if you dont bend your needles ?
BTW good videos and very helpful for ppl that are wanting to learn how to tattoo the correct way!

@tat2edsinner no ,... national is basically spaulding , it is a late 80's spaulding puma frame
Do you have any videos on how you set up your liners?

Hi... Is there a difference between a standard magnum vs a standard round magnum needle when packing solid black. Which works best in your opinion and which would you recommend for solid black work?
is the contact screw made of steel? copper Is best brass they don't put off carbon , what is gap and cap size
hey quick question were did you get that grip
also were did you get the bumber or the a bar
@vazartz you dont just adjust a machine to use as a liner or whatever, you assemble it , tune it for what your going to use it for. you dont just turn a screw and call it a liner, see some other videos i have , lick the video listing how each machine is set up according to springs their tensions coils capacitor , stroke and so on.

yes , the stroke is generally the same and you can get by with same machine , i have a slight difference in spring angle and armature weight .
@1stdarknightslayer i have covered that , what video is not working ?
Nice!
thank you
@Zombieblake83 sure , but u r probably talking about a single pass liner , so try slowing the machine down by using a tad more than a dime

@anonimustatts you can buy one from eternalink or just do what i do .... put a thin layer of blue RTV silicone on the bottom of the a bar
Thank you
not a comment but a question ,I have always had trouble with white ink, never seems to go well for..does ok sometimes on something small like a claw or teeth but much bigger doesnt do well at all..what can I do so it works better ? thanks
how about on rotary machine, i"d like to know how i will set it? great vid...

NOVICE QUESTION;
How do you get the ink from the needle?
@stinkygusto time ? take all you can , better to do a second sitting if need be. and voltage has nothing to do with speed. of the machine . its to make the hit harder. have you ever heard about how to hold the stretch of the skin ? this will help also . 3 point stretch . so you FEEL the vibration of the needle in the stretcher hand ?
No it wasnt off of ebay.. Id eternal ink good for linung and the 4mm is it from the armature bar to the coils or the bar to the front spring
i did a tatt today with moms outlining and i still had problems like the needle penetrates fine but ink wont .. it either wont come out at all or very little at that
Any way to make a homemade bumper for the armature bar?
is there anywhere we can see your tattoo work?
how hard do you press down when coloring ? plz help
bumper under the amateur bar?? how do i put 1 on my machine..?
weird i was just thinking this last nite....thanks...
WHAT IF UR USING A ROTARY MACHINE...HOW MUCH VOLTAGE IS ADEQUATE TO GET A SOLID BLACK LIKE FOR TRIBAL?
@katana15115 just go to infinite irons it is easy to understand
What I've used in the past for a "bumper" is just a small peice of paper towel..I dont any more because we went to rotary machines..
well kinda goes without saying , sorta, anything past the shoulder of the needle and it get dangerous, long tapers let you use the taper for lighter or darker when shading , but go too deep with a liner and damaging blow outs result .
Thanx for the hel

rotaries voltage adjust speed you cant adjust stroke unless you have a rotary with different cams
how do you know you're adding a volt if you don't have a meter display letting you know how many volts you are using? just by feel?
their is 2 different uses for black ink outlines and color , drawing inks or liner inks are for lines it is thin and flows , color ink in more think and dense for filling in like any other color , zuper black . triple black are coloring inks see this video on what blacks inks are about watch?v=292I54g4bRI

whats a wrap ?
sure
drill a dimple in the spot over the core and put a thin dab of rtc in it

do you know what hertz your running at??
what is a nikle and a daim width in milimeters, I have no american money at hand, could anyone help me please?
@747freestyleking i make it with a dab of rtv silicone but you can buy on eat eternal tattoo ink ,....my grips are from mithra
what exactly do you mean ?
no a liner is a totally different machine, the gap is small so a liner always runs fast and strong , the thing about liners when you are a beginner is the machines runs fast and usual the hand moves slow bad combination , a slightly bigger gap will slow it down 3.5mm, a nickle of needle showing past the tip so you can see the depth , dont ride the tube, if machine is tuned 6 or 7 volts will be plenty , if lines are week or dotted your too shallow and/or no stretch
