I watch dozens of these, and this was phenomenal. It makes me feel that the problem with Hollywood writing these days is not skill, but a profound lack of wisdom.

  • @G-Blockster
    @G-Blockster Před 5 měsíci +16

He dropped a few profound nuggets of wisdom. For example, characters spend the rest of their lives living self-fulfilling prophecies, striving to disprove the lie they believe about the world or themselves.

    • @divyanggolani6967

Shouldn't it be, 'striving to PROVE the lie they believe about the world.' Like Joker who wanted to prove the lie he believed that everyone is as depraved as he is.

@divyanggolani6967 Good points. My thought was that the protagonists effortlessly believed the lie because in some small way, the Normal World rewards them for their "misbehavior." It's only after they realize their misbelief is the real obstacle to their goals will they struggle to reprogram themselves.

It just feels so deliciously naughty rooting for such a deeply flawed character. Forbidden fruit. And we all feel like anti heroes in a way. We are all trying to shout down our demons so our better angels can sing. We all struggle to forgive ourselves for our mistakes.
And when they do manage to do good here and there, the mini redemptions are that much more satisfying.

    • @Lark572

Plus, evil is just cooler. Earth Vader is just cooler than Luke skywalker. Hans Gruber is just cooler than John McClain. Hannibal Lecter is just cooler than Clarisse starling. Anti heroes give us the best of both worlds.

@bryanvalvana1548 respectfully, the attribute of being cool doesn't equate with being an anti-hero. Hannibal Lecter, Darth Vader, and Hans Gruber are stone cold, sociopathic killers (and a cannibal in the case of Lecter). There is nothing redeeming about them. Aside from Vader, who has a change of heart at the very end of his life, their entire arc is a selfish drive to commit acts of evil. They cannot be construed as anti-heroes. They are villains full stop. FWIW, i don't think these villains are cooler than their protagonists. These particular characters are flat out monsters. Luke's struggles with his family's legacy, Clarice's struggles with her own frailties, and John McLane's struggles with his own personal relationships make them all far more relatable than their antagonists, and John McClane is way cooler than that pretentious dickhead Hans Gruber (RIP to Alan Rickman)

Some great ones off the top of my head.
    John McClane from Die Hard
Clarence and Alabama from True Romance
Randall McMurphy from One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
    Leon from The Professional
Not the biggest comic book movie fan overall but I think V from Vendetta and Hugh Jackman as Wolverine especially in Logan gave us great anti-hero performances.

the main character and his grandfather (who's in-world moniker is "the hero"), who are in elements anti-heroes themselves, both directly inspire the implied future anti-hero and fleet admiral, in the modern tolkienesque graphic novel, one piece. [vagueness is intentional for spoilers]

Hero: I've done nothing wrong ever, and I'll stand up for all that's right and ethical.
    Audiences: Boring...
Villain: I've done wrong all my life, and I don't see anything wrong with that!
Audience: Hmm...there's a 'rizz' about this one...
Anti Hero: I've done right most of my life, and I've done some bad shit too, but when the push comes to shove, about something bad that's about to go down and mess up all we stand up for, then, boy! - will I be the one to right the wrong, even at the cost of my life?- YES!
    Audience: YAAY!-

There is a place for an inspiring hero like Superman out there, children need strong heroes to look up to
Unfortunately the white bread "here I am to save the day" character gets boring fast, and so we need anti heroes and strong villains to play them off
