  • Abandoned Walmart - Dallas, TX. A rarity, this store closed due to there being too many Walmart stores in close proximity to each other. As a result, this one just sits empty but is still watched over by security.

This store closed primarily due to high theft and constant police calls. This area of South Dallas has experienced a substantial increase in crime in recent years as low-income residents from Oak Cliff are pushed further south by gentrification. However, redevelopment is also finally beginning to take place at the nearby Southwest Center (Red Bird) mall after years of back and forth, which should definitely help the area if successful.

Wrong. It has nothing to do with that. Wally World just wanted total control of the area so they kept opening stores to the point that they were losing money. It's economic balance - something they can't get right. They had sooo many stores within one city that none of them could make the hewg profits Wally World wanted. I despise them. They're the reason I never see mom and pop stores around any more - all of them have been bankrupted by Wally World and Target. Oh well, they'll be bankrupt too because Amazon is just getting bigger and bigger. We're headed for a very dangerous economy where one brand can dictate the price of everything and ruin our lives in the blink of an eye. Trust me, if all the big name stores go under, Amazon WILL raise its prices because there's no competition left.

This Walmart was closed due to theft and crime in the parking lot. Every time I visited this store it was always packed with shoppers day and night. I went a few times around 2-4am and it had so many people shopping you would have thought it was 3pm or something. I hated seeing this one close for sure... It was not to long before it closed they found a person that had died in their vehicle and I guessed was living in their car and had been dead for quite some time before they found the person and then maybe a year before that they found another deceased person in the field next to the store. It was definitely a bad area.

I used to work at Walmart. In the town where I worked at Wal-Mart, we had two abandoned stores. They were both older, smaller stores that were closed because Supercenters were opened to replace them.
There was something of a happy ending eventually, I think about six years after they closed one of them became a Walmart Neighborhood Market. So it got remodeled and re-opened. But that's unusual that normally doesn't happen.
I worked in the cash office, so I would process payments from people who would rent the empty store occasionally. The police would actually rent the empty building and do training seminars in there for example.
Walmart is notorious for leaving their buildings abandoned and empty, they're big contributor to urban blight. They did take good care of the buildings in the town where I worked, they didn't let them get damaged or vandalized and they sent some people from the other store to pick up the trash occasionally and paid for security. So I give them credit for that. They don't let the buildings rot.
Walmart doesn't like their locations going to their competition so they're not likely to sell it to HEB or any other retailer, but the problem is that means the store will sit there empty for a long time.

Imagine some rich person buying this and turning it into their house. Not a bad idea really if you have the money. You can split the space up into different rooms and reuse some of the existing rooms; for example, the McDonald's can be turned into a kitchen/dining area, the garden center can be a patio and the stockrooms all make great storage spaces. Parking certainly wouldn't be a problem either.

    1. Oak Cliff is not a suburb. It's damn near half of Dallas. This particular location is a few blocks from Desoto in one direction and Duncanville in another, both if which are seperate suburbs but Oak Cliff is Dallas proper
    2. Walmart actually uses DFW as their home market, being that Arkansas is not a market into itself and Dallas is the closest Metro area so the over saturation of Walmarts is common. I live in Keller TX and I have 7 Super Centers, 3 Neighbor stores and 2 Sam's Clubs within a 10 minute drive so it's not uncommon here

Maybe they plan to divide the Wal-Mart in half and have two smaller stores? There's an old Wal-Mart (not a supercenter) in my town that only has about 1/4 of the store still in use, by Harbor Freight.
    Just a wild guess...

What they will probably do if they have the same idea for the stores as the ones where I’m from do. Is they will probably take the old store and turn it into a series of stores. The old Walmart a town over from me is now a Burke’s outlet a harbor freight tools and a tractor supply company and Amazon thrift store.

The Kirnwood store at Wheatland road had discovered a dead man in his car who was found to be in that state for several weeks with nobody knowing this. And that one got shut down so we have to shop at the Ledbetter and i35 store or go to the one on Wheatland Rd at Clarke.

@@DalmationProductions Mine has quite a history. It began as a Venture store and became Kmart later in the 90s, resulting in a nearby classic Kmart to relocate to this smaller store. That classic Kmart is currently a Fitness Connections (before, it was a flea market since 2002) and the Venture Kmart became Burlington in 2004, which just relocated to a smaller store up the road. The school district is currently converting the Venture/Kmart/Burlington building to a Talent Development Center. I miss Kmart too.

Close proximity to other Walmart's isn't why it was shut down. Walmart closed it because of very high theft (there was even a massive amount going on by employees and management) and the Dallas Police frequently being called
