One of the things that makes slim more resilient?
      An external power supply.
The internalized ones, especially when the system got hot, could easily fail if they suffered either surges (the supply failing was a 30$ fix vs 200$+) or drops.
Given it was marketed as the first truly vertical console, that's probably not surprising drops happened more frequently.

For a bit more information, the SCPH-7900x slims do not have the same disc scratching flaw that other slims do. This is because the SCPH-7900x does not hold the ribbon cable down with adhesive, instead using plastic clips. The SCPH-700xx slims also don't have the compatibility issues others have, with the exception of Final Fantasy XI, and that's because the 700xx has a similar chipset to the fat models.

I think it came down to economies of scale. The PS2 was so popular, Sony could afford to make the hardware tinier and tinier and cost less to manufacture. Coincided with a time when consumer electronics really started getting smaller, and smaller, and more compact... Compare a similar example: the Sega Genesis which has had MANY design variants over its nearly decade in production, starting from 4 major ICs (the 68k, Z80, VDP and YM2612), going down to 3, then 2, then EVERYTHING mashed into a single ASIC. The console didn't shrink nearly as much, but the PCB shrank. You could tell how much less it cost Sega to manufacture by the end of the console's lifespan. Crazy!

I still have my childhood silver slim from 2005, we went through 3 fats in under 4 years due to the infamous disc read error problem. The slim scratched a couple of my discs in like 2013, however what I didn’t know at the time was what an easy fix it is. Push the ribbon cable behind the laser down, if the adhesive has worn off take a piece of double sided tape and put it under the ribbon cable and your golden. Ended up finding the slim in the basement when we were getting ready to move earlier this year. Super grateful we found it I love that little guy to death and I’m glad I still have my exact childhood console all these years later

Thanks for the tip, i’m definitely going to try that. I got a free PS2 slim after buying something off some dude on FB Marketplace. It was just the console, so I went on a full on journey to acquire the OG power cord, Guitar Hero, and some other games. Started it up and I played through just one song until the system just went blank, then wouldn’t read the disc. I turned it upside down and voila, it worked 😂. But, as a back up I got another Slim off marketplace with cords, controller and a few games for $50. Absolute steal. Now i’m in a dilemma on which model to keep. The 75 or 77, or should I buy the fat console 30001R. I’m going to try your method but i’m slowly learning that each one has its pros and cons. So I might just keep the one that’s working the best and in best condition, then trade in the other for the fat PS2 just a collector item - or resell it one day.

Another thing that makes the OG PS2s better that the slims is that most especially the model SCPH-39001 consoles from 2002 seem to hold up pretty well for their age even with minimal maintainance. I look on ebay and see a lot more broken slims than OG "fats" and I've wasted money on 2 slim consoles (one from ebay and the other from my local pawn shop) that can't read DVD's and PS2 DVD ROMs. I had a PS2 SCPH-39001 that I bought from my local GameStop preowned back in 2010 and it worked better than my piece of junk slim SCPH-79001 that I bought brand new in 2008. This is false. Outright. The slim has shown itself to actually keep heat BETTER than the ps2 fat, as weird as it sounds. It’s just a part of physics. Phat, large objects build up more heat and don’t dissipate it as well as Slim, small objects.
As for design, that’s for you to decide, but the slim does have better power efficiency.
      I love the fat though

The slim only scratches if the ribbon cable in the disc drive gets loose, but it's not guaranteed
The phat has it's own issues, like dying lasers (most phats I come across that have never been opened up either can't read blue discs, gold discs, or movies), loud fans, slow boot up times, etc.
I own both and both have their own pros and cons, but with having close to 300 games, I've never had my slim give me issues with compatibility on any of them. Most people won't have that issue either

Lost count on the amount of times I went back and fourth to gamestop and even got a brand new copy of Xenosaga, and it STILL red screen. Both versions had compatability issues with PS1 games. When it comes to scratches, it depends on which slim, but even the bad ones rarley made disk breaking scratches, usally just circular ones that interupt the game a sec, or maybe make it take a few tries to launch lol. Either way a fart could scratch thoes disks. When it came to the hard drive expansion possibility, man its the ps2, I dont think Ill ever need that lol. I never heard of support issues for the slim, especially considering the slim came after, and was well known to be better built and have more reliable quality than the original, not to mention it sounds more like a fan than a jet engine. The scratch issue i think came from just how the ribbon mechanism worked.
