    Watching this TV show live was eye-opening. The talent of those 5 young people compared to the other groups was astounding to see. Remember, Mitch, Scott, and Kirstie were only 19 years old. Their confidence level and risk-taking was not discouraged throughout the series and by the end, they were solidified in acapella lore. Enjoy the rest of the journey!

      Eye-opening for sure. The other groups all had amazing moments (Afro Blue doing American Boy and then A Change is Gonna Come was phenomenal) but generally sort of fell apart somewhere in each song. PTX just flat out delivered no matter what.

      Jon Hartig this was my exact response to watching it live as well. and as someone IN an a cappella quartet at the time, it was HELLA inspiring. No one really came close to them on any season, IMO. There were great groups, fabulous technicians - but they were just in a league of their own.

    Unlike other singing competitions, the criticism from the judges in The Sing-Off tends to be constructive and encouraging. You'll notice that Ben Folds tempered his criticism with outright praise for PTX.

      Also remember when it comes to people like Ben Folds, he is a music dork to true levels. At times he whips up terms that baffle Shawn Stockton, who is also a performing arts school grad. Shawn just manages to keep it a little more real than detailed like Ben. I think only Jewell in season 4 geeks out like Ben does. (Said kind heartedly from another music geek).

    Don't worry about the criticism they get. They take it positively and grow with it. They just continue to grow and grow through this show series. I really am looking forward to your reaction to their 3rd performance. It is one of my favorites from this show.

    This is one group that holds nothing back. They take criticism in stride and attempt to learn from it to improve. When you get to the end of the season, it will become clear that the judges had to work HARD to find criticisms to make - Pentatonix was judged on a higher level than many of the other groups both in this season and the previous ones. I don't believe it was intended to put them down - rather that it was intended to push an already amazing group of performers into the greatness that the judges (and the rest of us) saw. While I enjoy all of their music, the Sing-Off performances are my favorites since it shows both how far they have come and how far they were above the rest of the field. Can't wait until you react to the rest of the season - keep your skullcap on for when they truly blow your mind! (it gets MUCH better soon.)

    Just wait until you hear them skip like a scratched record.... I liked this one too and totally agree with you. Unfortunately, there is one song they do that sounds like they were way off that day, but for the most part, they just keep on breaking the rules, pushing the envelope and just plain lighting the whole world on fire as they get better and better at polishing what they do.     They were continuing to get to know and trust each other, and having to do it there on stage must have been terrifying. The shows were weekly, so they had to learn and arrange a song, and sometimes two songs, each week. The Trio were into pop and current music, but Avi and Kevin's backgrounds were more classical, so it must have been harder for them to catch on, but even in this second week, they were wowing the judges. You mentioned that it seemed short - on most of these competition shows, each group is limited to about 2 minutes per song, so they can get through 15 or 16 performances, plus all the talk before and after. It is amazing what these guys can do in 2 minutes!

    fun fact: sara bareilles was in an acapella group at UCLA and she won Spring Sing which is this huge talent show the school puts on every year

    Just one thing, make sure to stay till the end, they usually have a little interview clip with them at the end. You’re especially not gonna want to miss that for one particular show. Thanks for doing this series, loving it :)

    So glad you’re doing the Sing Off series. Don’t worry, Scott says in a later video package that “We’re going to keep taking risks, because that’s what we do.” For me, the fourth performance, Video Killed the Radio Star, is when they gelled and settled in as a group. My favorite performance is “Dog Days are Over.” “Get it On” is a Scott showcase and is great.

    I first saw them doing a video with Lindsay Stirling then I researched them and found the SIng Off episodes. Man was I blown away, and I've watched them over and over. It is awesome seeing them at their start. They are now my favorite group. I'd love to see them make more original songs. The original songs that they have made are all great and I love them.

    I agree. Even though this isn’t one of my favorite performances, I still liked it. I never heard the song before (still til this day lol) so I can’t really compare their version. But that breakdown in the middle was awesome. They definitely deserve more praise than what they got. Can’t wait for your next reaction!

    I totally agree with you, but I'm not a Kesha fan either. I think that 2 songs into it the judges still weren't ready for what this group of people are able to do with a piece of music. They are masters of rearranging and I think coming out and trying to mimic a sing talk style was just not gonna happen with a group of this caliber. I understand Ben's criticism, but l'm so glad they chose to do it the way they did.

    Their version of Let's get it on by Marvin Gaye is what cemented their win on this show.....and put them on the path to stardom. I'm glad you found and appreciate this music. It's exceptional as far as acapella is concerned. It's not the over-choir-istic sound. It's genuine music.

    Man, they didn't stop taking risks! Everybody has their own favorite PTX Sing Off performances. Mine are #4, 5, 7, 10, and definitely #12 Dog Days are Over. The others are good too. Thanks for doing these Sing Off reactions. I love hearing reactors' thoughts as they go thru them. PTX came back in Season 4 (I Need Your Love) & Season 5 (Holiday Medley) and did guest performances on the Sing Off that are also some of my favorites. You could see how much more professional and polished they were after 1 and 2 years and coming back to the show. But they were really good from the first performance and they were doing ground-breaking work, so fresh and doing stuff no one had done before in the acappella world. Looking forward to the next one!

      dog days are over #12 is still to this day one of their best performances even compared to their best of the last 9 years! ( in my opinion obv but i love it so much)

    Part of the problem with programs like this is that usually each week or performance has to be in a certain genre and sometimes they can choose within that genre and sometimes it seems like the songs are assigned and as you will see as you go along, some of them are way outside their comfort zone and it isn't always obvious which ones but with a couple of possible exceptions they just got better and better each performance and there are some really killer ones to come.

    For some more great older stuff, check our the cover of "We Are Young" by fun. Not long after winning the Sing Off, their Sony Label dropped them. So they kept on going and recorded things in their apartment and releasing on you tube and moving to streaming platforms. I believe I read that the Daft Punk video was done at the apartment too.

    Great reaction! They really had some moments in this one that were "sick" for me too, to steal a word you used in this =) Also, I again have to urge you to watch these Sing Off videos all the way to the end, even when it seems the video is over after the judges have finished with their comments -- I think every single one has a post-performance clip of Pentatonix reacting to the judges' comments and talking about their performance immediately after going off stage, and quite a few of them are really worth listening to. Just wanted to let you know in case you weren't aware!! Thanks again for the reactions

    Music is SO subjective. I'm with you, I thought Ben was a little too critical of the first half of their arrangement. But there too, it's advice, not concrete mix. It was something they would consider moving forward, but it didn't hamper them too badly. Thanks again for another solid reaction.

    When episodes aired doesn't explain the time they had between taping! I believe there was a week between though. Only the last episode was real time... it aired at the end of November. Most everything else was taped in August.
    You should watch the group opening numbers! They not only had this number but a group one with everyone AND major choreography. Also... you should watch some of the Dartmouth Aires videos from the show. It'll give a good comparison to the arranging with 18 vs. 5...

    I liked Kirstie's verse but as a whole I didn't really care for the first part... didn't hate it either though lol. The second half was super sick ofc haha.
    They worry about the criticism in some of their video packages, but it doens't stop them from taking risks and you can definitely see them incorporating some feedback and growing as a group - it's really cool
    The episodes were structured a week apart with them sometimes doing two songs per episode - I found those episodes generally are where some of their weaker performances came from, as one would be just okay and the other would be killer.
    In the beginning they had too many groups, so they split them into half and each episode only had half. For that reason, this week they did two performances.
    (For which performances were in the same week, it went as [1] - [2, 3] - [4] - [5] - [6] - [7, 8] - [9, 10] - [11, 12])

    The season that Pentatonix won was over 71 days and there was 11 episode. So that is 1 show every 5-6 days

    They have a few great performances in the Sing Off. This wasn't one of them. I think they could have chosen a much better song. Dog Days Are Over and Let's Get It On are really well done. Kyle - you rock. I hope things are getting a bit better for you.

    Yeah, this one worked for me as well.
    The show was on once a week, so they had a few days to put the songs together.
    Oh. And keep in mind they win the show, shi they keep being themselves. And become more cohesive!!

    The gap was one week. They do one or two songs one night a week. The first and the second songs are a week apart the second and third I think are he same night (but I could be wong) the 4th is a week later. the fifth and sixth are the same night. The rest break up like this also where some weeks they do one song and others they do two.

    Pentatonix is amazing, no doubt, but there's another group almost as good as they are, called Home Free!
    I recommend:

    I can't wait for you to get to the songs coming up...there are a lot of performances in sing off... perhaps you could do two songs per video or not...either way, enjoying the reactions :D

    👉👉Again, they had some hits and some misses. They were new as a 5 pc. group and they only have a few minutes due to there being a lot of groups that need to perform. They get better KEEP IT UP! And just a side note, Mitch sufferers from anxiety he has admitted to always freaking out before a performance. The rest of the group (esp. Scott) was there to encourage him. This is why he doesn't lead on many of these performances. He still gets nervous/anxious but has gotten better!👍

    This is my second-least-favorite performance of theirs on TSO. I find the sound overall thin, not full like they usually are. I do love the scratch-stop, but that’s about it.
    Btw, Ben Folds admitted on his blog at the time of broadcast that he was a Kesha fan, so that informed his criticism of PTX.
