Now that I actually think about it I can hear the similarities 17s voices a bit more impetuous but there is enough similarity in the sound that's obvious when you look at it in retrospect
I can't believe people didn't get the "you're a good kid" joke. It's obvious that Piccolo saw Trunks being mistreated by his father and decided he should prevent Gohan developing a complex by letting him know he appreciates him.
Agreed. And it even goes a bit meta when you think about the fact that Gohan effectively helped raise that version of Trunks. So it points to Trunks deserving better and Gohan being the better.
Yeah, right? It was Piccolo making sure to give Gohan some positive reinforcement after seeing Trunks being treated so horribly.

I always interpreted Piccolo's "you're a good kid" line as him making sure Gohan doesn't turn into a massive asshole like Vegeta, who clearly wasn't given enough positive reinforcement during his childhood.

He saw Trunks being mistreated by his father and decided to take a second to make sure Gohan knows he's loved. It's funny in context but also very sweet.
Forget positive reinforcement he wasn't given enough spankings, that's proven by him getting humbled and more mellow as the series went on after getting his butt handed to him over and over again.

I think the "ear thing" joke w/ 17 where he kills Gero is the perfect example of subtle callback humor. Him saying "Sorry Doc, just following orders" 🤌🏼 referencing him quipping earlier that he has an auditory bug where everything Gero says sounds like "Kill me" was great

subtle is the opposite of the right word to use there, he says "can you repeat that? i think the ear thing is back" right before doing it full on telegraphing the joke
great example of a SUBTLE calleback joke in this episode though, is when Piccolo say's "Gohan, you're a good kid" after seeing Vegeta be a dick to Trunks as a callback to when Goku said it to Yamcha after hearing about his future
17 and 18 felt like brother and sister, legitimately.

17 and 18's voices are not only distinct among the styles of the cast, but they're so _natural_ in cadence and delivery, and they really do sound like siblings, aurally and in dialogue. Superb characterization.
"I am pissed and hungry, she is right to fear me" occasionally pops up in my friend group with the pronouns adjusted as needed and honestly, the delivery on that was incredible.
Love the absolute LIGHT in Kaiser's eyes when Lani brings up the episode breakdowns.

As a VFX Artist, I cannot recommend KaiserNeko's episode breakdowns enough. Whether you're just getting started or you've been doing motion graphics for years, Scott is an excellent teacher, and it's insane how super-talented he is.
Yea I was actually learning quite a lot, and he just… stopped to make cocktails for a bit. 😅

Somehow, despite being a huge _Dragon Ball_ fan, I had never even _heard_ of _Dragon Ball Z Abridged_ until not even a year before it ended (during the hiatus between 59 and 60.) It might be because I'm an old man now (47,) I don't follow social media, and I'm not part of any online _Dragon Ball_ fandom (which I unfortunately find to be... mostly pretty annoying.)
However, it _did_ mean that I was able to binge the entire series before the final 3-parter, and as part of that I went through to catch up on everything I could find and watched all of his excellent episode breakdowns as well.
Wonderful stuff.
I always wanted to get into that kind of stuff but I think I'd just fail miserably. Not very tech savvy but I'd be willing to learn.

I feel like it would track that in the circle of villainous paranoid mad scientists it would make sense that they would keep tabs on one another.
I remember an episode of Young Justice where, in fact, they found one mad roboticist they were looking for by asking another mad roboticist they already caught and imprisoned about his whereabouts.
No-one knows where my lab is... Unless they knew some scientists, like the Briefs famil- SHIIIITTTTT!

To me, Piccolo complementing Gohan was his response to watch Trunk being completely obliterated, like, Gohan just saw a train wreck and he want to confort him
Let's not forget the similarly between them. Vegeta died and was never there for Trunks and goku died for a year, came back and then abandoned him for 3 or 4 years.

(something that comes up during Gohan's rage moments later on 🤔 )

Shocked that 17 and 18 weren’t particularly well received. They were my favourite characters, particularly 17. His whole vibe was perfect, so impish and too cool for school with such great snark, yet so genuinely affectionate for 16 like an accepting older brother. Felt like such a real person, I found him incredibly loveable.
That is so wierd, I like both of them.

Couple things:
1. My headcanon is that Dr. Gero was totally into the whole "trucker" fad back in the 1970s. Like he totally played "Convoy" in the background while working on his earlier Red Ribbon Army projects.
2. A while ago I actually suggested to my sister that we do a sibling cosplay of 17 & 18. She really loved robot characters, her hair was blonde at the time, & I just wanted an excuse to dress up like a good-lookin' dude. We never did it, though, cuz she's not as into cosplay or DBZ as I am. Oh, well.

Vegeta’s “I don’t listen to bastards” line made my jaw drop when I first heard it. It has got to be one of the most coldest and badass lines you guys came up with and it’s one of my all time favorite DBZA Vegeta lines
Krillin's laughter immediately after Bulma realizing she solicited hew own son for sex is genuinely for me one of the best moments of the entire show.

He was criminally underused in the OG DBZ i feel like cause of him getting absorbed first and not being a love interest for the main cast. I like him alot in TFS abridged and super though as well
17 in the official dub is so, so dry and boring. I don't know how his character is played in the original JP version, I hope it's not as try-hard.

God, I don't know if you'll bring it up... but the fact that, when 18 said "There's a soulless machine joke, but that's beneath me" that Cell was *literally beneath her.* LAYERS.
"I don't give a shit about butterflies" is somehow one of my favorite lines in the entire series. This episode in general often is one I find myself clicking on/watching randomly and without fail being obligated to binge until the finale.

16 always struck me as the twins little brother with special needs. It makes me endeared to them as they always support and compliment him from the moment they meet him.

Yeah, and that probably further helps to humanize them and cement the fact that they aren't inherently or necessarily some Strictly-Evil characters, whereas in the actual show (if I recall correctly, tho it's been a while) they just treat him in a much more clinical manner of approach (kinda like just a coworker or something) purely because they share a goal in-common as though nothing else mattered between them.

Thankfully, they don’t speak slowly to 16, nor do they treat him all that different, they’re just friendly with him and respect him. They treat him like he’s just another relative they’re close with, which is good.
Speaking slowly to someone and treating them like they could get upset easier than others is very hurtful, even more so when it comes from someone who is supposed to be close to them.
Kaiser complimenting Lani is heartwarming to see. Big bud energy is my jam.
Also love the fact they used the Cybermen theme when unveiling #17 and #18. And it took me this long to get the joke of "Pretty sure I thought I was about to be a wish there."

Wouldn't be surprised if Vegeta was a bastard himself, ironically. Even with the current lore, Saiyans only ever paired off to have kids, with Bardock and Gine being the exception.
@@MMTrigger I don't think a LEGITIMATE ROYAL HEIR Prince of all Saiyans can be considered a bastard. Usually when nobility is involved, the term is reserved for illegitimate offspring. But to be fair, we don't know much about Saiyan culture. I can imagine that aside from combat, Saiyans could have actually produced exemplary cooks for the upper echelons of the nobility, as all Saiyans have voracious appetites, but ultimately figuring out ways to make nutritious AND delicious food would have been something for cooks to TAKE PRIDE in, and a Saiyan's pride is something to be reckoned with.
Maybe they even had incredible carpenters and stone masons and other sorts of handymen that needed to take pride in their work and produce necessary infrastructure, so, once again, pride. Or maybe they lived in caves and ate raw meat all day every day and punched each other to sleep.
I wouldn't be surprised if Trunks threw a "Well I don't bother following an orphan's orders".
The only characters that aren't fatherless in this show are Bulma & Chi-Chi.
Vegeta listens to them more than the rest of the characters.
2:25 love the bromance
I always thought the Piccolo complimenting Gohan line was him embracing his inner "parent". Leaning into the "Piccolo is Gohan's real dad" bit. Him baring witness to Vegeta, a real father, being that scathing to his own offspring must have made him feel that.
It's not really leaning into the bit; the bit's certainly there, but it also makes just as much sense for Piccolo to say it from the angle of a surrogate uncle as it does from that of a surrogate father. Even TFS at this point was leaning away from the "Goku is a horrible father" joke and more towards "Goku is an ignorant father who simply doesn't realize how different Gohan is from him".
I absolutely ADORE the ear-thing bit, and I feel like it doesn't get enough love. 17's line "Just following orders" gave me chills the first time I watched it.

20:54- Damn, the realization there…I love how Kaiser is sort of horrified and Lani is just like, “Yeah, makes sense!” All cheerful and nonchalant. Amazing! XD
It's low key something I never thought about until he said it and considering how amoral and tonight evil Gero is towards life in general yeah it's in character
@@spiderrocket8367 We do know for a fact he experimented on at least two teenagers for 17 and 18 (and possibly earlier, given Eighter's stitching and general Frankensteinian appearance). I can't imagine they could possibly have been his first attempts. It makes way too much sense if they were just his most complete successes, proof of concept before he designed 19 to perform the now-successful process on him.
I love Gero's sudden realization that he doesn't know HOW he put his brain in another body! You know that there are piles of failed experiments lying around somewhere. He really is one of the darkest villains in the series. Fully evil, fully rational, and entirely intentional. Same with Bibidi & Babidi.
Yeah, I feel like it cannot be said enough how good Gon and Amber are at VA'ing their characters. They compliment the writing so much it's just perfect.
They bring them to life the same way the Ginyu Force was brought to life, but in the Ginyus' case, a lot of that was due to the writing salvaging most of them from the status of disposable minions, so it's hard to gauge how well the VA alone would have done the job. The changes to 17 and 18 are subtler, giving their voice direction more of a chance to shine, and they absolutely fucking kill it.
Finished the video but had to rewind for the "Girl you know I appreciate you" 😂😂. I was feeling shitty and this turned my whole mood around. Thank you guys

@@WinterGray8888 Right, that's his sarcastic explanation for why he tried to kill Gero last time. Essentially, when Gero says something disrespectful and makes 17 mad, he explains it away as "all I heard was 'KILL ME'." Btw can we talk about how 17 is one of the most underrated villains in all of Dragon Ball? Yes, 18 obviously was complicit in ruining Trunks' timeline, but I always got the vibe that 17 was the instigator, he just has this sadistic side of him that wants to screw with people and torment them for his own amusement, 18 just kind of reacts to his BS, perhaps because they're siblings, they were kidnapped and turned into cyborgs, so they have this common bond, and she seems kind of bored like she has nothing better to do, no real purpose in life. I think the scene where 17 screws with that old man with the gun is so creepy and that's lifted straight from the original. Like this poor old man barely survived his town being slaughtered and risks his life to try and kill the one responsible, and 17 toys with him. Again, 17 is not an alien or part of an evil clan of warriors or something. He's just a regular human being who was given superpowers. That's what makes him scary to me. "Why are you doing this?" "Why not? Who's gonna stop us?"

Lani's how to voice act videos YEARS ago and Kaiser's editing breakdown videos actually taught me TONS when I was younger. I still remember all sorts of stuff from those, like Lani showing how to do different ranges and how to breathe from your diaphragm.
I thought I was the only one who remembers those things that they did.

I think it's just Vegeta's way of expressing his opinion that he thinks his son is incompetent. Interesting that Vegeta calls himself a prince when, by definition, he is the King of all Saiyans, he expects better from the heir prince of his race.

I'm glad you guys plugged the Episode Breakdowns, I looked forward to those as much as the actual episodes back then. Also I completely forgot back when you guys watched episode 14 with Zarbon saying "I believe that was the space duck, sir." I remember a video back then of Kaiser showing how he was doing lip flaps on a moving shot like that in Premiere. I don't know if this video still exists but I swear I remember it. That was actually one of my first times even seeing digital editing being done in something other than Windows Movie Maker (I was young and didn't look too deep into editing, don't hate me), and that video he did motivated me to take a video editing class in high school, which eventually got my foot in the door for a visual effects career. So Kaiser's editing showcase helped me find my passion and eventual career in a vague roundabout way, so thanks Scott!

i think my favorite scene in this episode is when Vegeta is giving Trunks crap for not telling the gang important information about the Androids {"I don't give a sht about butterflies!"}. Not only is Lani able to still preserve the fact that this is Vegeta and he is by no means the best person to be dressing down all the mistakes Trunks made here, but in a sense, you also have to give Vegeta some credit for being absolutely right in this instance. It's also pretty funny to watch as Vegeta is furiously pointing his arm up and down in time with "You told us! Two Androids! May 12th! South City!"
Absolutely right about what exactly? The information Trunks gave them or the fact that he as a 10 month old baby couldn't possibly have all the information concerning the androids/cyborgs? I mean really the one at fault is future Bulma for not telling him where the lab was, but quite frankly it all falls back on Vegeta since he lead the crusade of not hunting them down in the first place while Bulma was gung-ho on "murdering" him.
@@lilchristuten7568 Trunks fought the androids when he was older, so he knew what they looked like. No reason he wouldn't include their description when telling Goku about them.

That wouldn't have made a difference since they aren't the ones who attacked the city (very likely in either time line).
@@lilchristuten7568 Except it would, because once the group saw that the androids looked absolutely nothing like his androids they would know at least something was off. Knowing what your foe looks like is important, especially when you can't sense them.
This was a straight up L for Trunks. Though he was lucky enough it didn't end up biting them all too much.

I don't know if they did it on purpose, but I always liked how Gero's "I am your master, and you will do what I say!" line echoes Chichi's line from season 2 to Gohan, "I am your mother, and you will do as I say!" Also, I legitimately use that Gero line every time one of my pieces of tech is acting up.
That cold open with Nick and Scott was absolutely adorable and hilarious.

This arc of Season 3 is probably my favorite: from the introduction of 17 and 18 through to when Cell absorbs 17. And a lot of it has to do with the fact that 16, 17, 18, and Imperfect Cell are all written and acted so incredibly well. They play so well together, it just all comes together perfectly.
I need to say right now -- Amber Lee Connors as #18 is, without question, my absolute FAVOURITE voice for the character (barring the japanese voice lmao). _Brilliant_ casting decision, guys
