Chevy is from Caddyshack, the Nation Lampoon's Vacation movie, Three Amigos.... He was on the original Saturday Night Live show. His catch phrase was "I'm Chevy Chase and you're not". Which is kind of appropriate here. The little guy sitting next to him is the one singing the song.

Chevy Chase, the one lip singing, you'd most likely know from the Vacation movies. If you've never seen them you missed out. Especially Christmas Vacation. Classic Christmas movie.

You have been exposed to one of the greatest singer/songwriters of the last 60 years. His catalogue, which began as Simon & Garfunkel, one of the greatest duo’s in music history and for decades since as a solo performer, is deep, varied and of the highest quality. Check him out further, either as duo or solo performer, and you’ll be very happy you did. I recommend Bridge Over Troubled Water, Sounds of Silence, Cecilia, Hearts and Bones, Diamonds on the Souls of Her Shoes, Boy in a Bubble, Me and Julio and The Boxer for starters. His list of masterpieces goes on and on.

I’m glad to see you got to this one! I had suggested it awhile back. I love this song. You might also like their song “Diamonds On The Soles Of Her Shoes “.

A very fun reaction 😁! He grew up in Queens, New York. You Can Call Me Al was released as the lead single from Paul Simon's 1986 album: Graceland. It was written and produced by Paul Simon. The song reached #15 on the Adult Contemporary chart, #23 on the Hot 100 and #42 on the Mainstream Rock chart. The music video was directed by Gary Weis. The video featured actor Chevy Chase (National Lampoons Vacation film series) lip-synching the vocals while Paul Simon pretended to play various instruments. The height difference between the 6'4 Chevy Chase and the 5'3 Paul Simon serves as a comical juxtaposition. Most videos at the time were "performance videos", meaning the bands would pretend to be playing the song. This video did a great job mocking them. The video was also notable for its simplicity - it was shot in a small, unadorned room using a single camera.
Paul Simon started recorded the song in South Africa, where he worked with local musicians and experimented with their sounds. He recorded with many different musicians while he was there, and he loved the work of the guys from a local group called: Stimela, whose guitarist Ray Phiri came up with the riff for this song during one of their jam sessions. These recordings were edited together in New York by Paul Simon's producer Roy Halee, a monumental task in the age of analog recording, since in South Africa, they rolled a lot of tape that Roy Halee had to sort out with a series of splices.
The song's lyrics contain some intricate wordplay that Paul Simon wrote very carefully around the track, and the character in the song symbolic of his South Africa experience. At the time, South Africa was divided by Apartheid, a policy that separated blacks and whites, and a cultural boycott was in place on Sun City. Paul Simon defied this boycott and went anyway, taking a lot of heat for his actions, even though his intentions were good, many black leaders in South Africa felt that any violation of the boycott hindered their cause. Because of the boycott, music from the area was secluded, and when Paul Simon released his album: Graceland, he brought the music of the Country to the world. In the 2012 documentary: Under African Skies, Paul Simon explained: "'You Can Call Me Al' is really the story of somebody like me, who goes to Africa with no idea and ends up having an extraordinary spiritual experience".
This song is about a self-obsessed person becoming aware of his surroundings. In a 1990 interview with SongTalk magazine, Paul Simon explained: "'You Can Call Me Al', starts off very easily with sort of a joke: 'Why am I soft in the middle when the rest of my life is so hard?'. Very easy words. Then it has a chorus that you can't understand. What is he talking about, you can call me Betty, and Betty, you can call me Al? You don't know what I'm talking about. But I don't think it's bothersome. You don't know what I'm talking about but neither do I. At that point.
The second verse is really a recapitulation: A man walks down the street, he says... another thing. And by the time you get to the third verse, and people have been into the song long enough, now you can start to throw abstract images. Because there's been a structure, and those abstract images, they will come down and fall into one of the slots that the mind has already made up about the structure of the song.
So now you have this guy who's no longer thinking about the mundane thoughts, about whether he's getting too fat, whether he needs a photo opportunity, or whether he's afraid of the dogs in the moonlight and the graveyard".
So where did "Al" and "Betty" in this song come from? That stems from a 1970 party that Paul Simon hosted with his wife, Peggy Harper. Paul Simon's friend, the composer Stanley Silverman, brought along another composer named Pierre Boulez, and when he made his exit, Pierre Boulez called Paul Simon "Al" and his wife "Betty". Pierre Boulez was French, and he wasn't being rude, it was just his interpretation of what he heard: Paul = Al, Peggy = Betty.
    Lyrics 🗒:
A man walks down the street
He says, "why am I soft in the middle, now?
Why am I soft in the middle?
The rest of my life is so hard
    I need a photo-opportunity
I want a shot at redemption
Don't want to end up a cartoon
    In a cartoon graveyard"
    Bonedigger, Bonedigger
    Dogs in the moonlight
Far away in my well-lit door
    Mr. Beerbelly, Beerbelly
Get these mutts away from me
You know, I don't find this stuff amusing anymore
    If you'll be my bodyguard
I can be your long lost pal
    I can call you Betty
And Betty, when you call me, you can call me Al
A man walks down the street
He says, "why am I short of attention?
Got a short little span of attention
And, whoa, my nights are so long
    Where's my wife and family?
    What if I die here?
    Who'll be my role model
Now that my role model is gone, gone?"
He ducked back down the alley
With some roly-poly little bat-faced girl
    All along, along
    There were incidents and accidents
    There were hints and allegations
    If you'll be my bodyguard
I can be your long lost pal
    I can call you Betty
And Betty, when you call me, you can call me Al
    Call me Al
A man walks down the street
    It's a street in a strange world
    Maybe it's the third world
Maybe it's his first time around
    Doesn't speak the language
    He holds no currency
    He is a foreign man
He is surrounded by the sound, the sound
    Cattle in the marketplace
    Scatterings and orphanages
    He looks around, around
He sees angels in the architecture
    Spinning in infinity
    He says, "Amen and Hallelujah"
    If you'll be my bodyguard
I can be your long lost pal
    I can call you Betty
And Betty, when you call me, you can call me Al
    Call me
Na na na na, na na na na
Na na na na, na na na-na na-na
Na na na na, na-na na-na na na
Na na na na, na-na na-na na na
    If you'll be my bodyguard
    I can call you Betty
    If you'll be my bodyguard
    I can call you Betty
    If you'll be my bodyguard
    Paul Simon Info 📰:
Paul Simon was born October 13, 1941 in Newark, New Jersey. He is a singer, producer, songwriter and actor. His songwriting catalog had earned 39 BMI Awards, including numerous citations for the songs: "Bridge Over Troubled Water", "Mrs Robinson", "Scarborough Fair" and "The Sound Of Silence". He's known both for his solo work and his album collaborations with Art Garfunkel. Their blend of Folk and Rock served as a soundtrack to the American Counterculture movement in the 1960s. Their final album: Bridge Over Troubled Water (1970), is among the best selling albums of all time. Paul Simon is among the world's best-selling music artists.
Paul Simon met Art Garfunkel when they were both aged 11. They performed in a school production of the play: Alice In Wonderland, for their sixth-grade graduation, and began singing together when they were 13, occasionally performing at school dances. At the age of 12 or 13 Paul Simon wrote his first song: "The Girl For Me", for him and Art Garfunkel to perform. According to Paul Simon, it became the "neighborhood hit". His father wrote the words and chords on paper for the boys to use, and that paper became the first officially copyrighted Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel song. It is now in the Library of Congress.
In 1957, in their mid-teens, they recorded the song: "Hey, Schoolgirl", under the name "Tom & Jerry", a name that was given to them by their record label: Big Records. The single reached number 49 on the Pop charts. After graduating from Forest Hills High School, Paul Simon majored in English at Queens College and graduated in 1963. Art Garfunkel studied mathematics education at Columbia University in Manhattan. Paul Simon was a brother in the Alpha Epsilon Pi fraternity, and attended Brooklyn Law School for one semester in 1963.
Between 1957 and 1964, Paul Simon wrote, recorded and released more than 30 songs. He and Art Garfunkel occasionally reunited as Tom & Jerry to record singles, including: "Our Song" and "That's My Story". Paul Simon enjoyed moderate success with singles as part of the group: Tico And The Triumphs, including the song: "Motorcycle", which reached number 99 on the Pop chart in 1962. The single: "Motorcycle", featured Paul Simon's lead vocals. Also in 1962, Paul Simon reached number 97 on the Pop charts under the name Jerry Landis, with the novelty song: "The Lone Teen Ranger". Both chart singles were released on Amy Records.
In early 1964, Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel auditioned for Columbia Records, whose executive Clive Davis signed them to produce an album. Columbia decided to call them Simon & Garfunkel instead of Tom & Jerry, and according to Paul Simon, this was the first time artists' surnames had been used in Pop music without their first names.
He and Art Garfunkel came to prominence in the 1960s as the duo: Simon & Garfunkel. Their albums: Wednesday Morning 3 AM (1964), Sounds Of Silence (1966), Parsley Sage Rosemary And Thyme (1966), Bookends (1968), and Bridge Over Troubled Water (1970), were all very well received by the Public and music critics alike. Their album: Bridge Over Troubled Water (1970), became the bestselling album of all time up to that point. The two decided to go their separate ways after their 1970 album although they would frequently reunite over the years for musical projects, concerts and tours.
As a solo artist, Paul Simon has explored genres including Gospel, Reggae and Soul. His albums: Paul Simon (1972), There Goes Rhymin' Simon (1973), and Still Crazy After All These Years (1975) kept him in the public eye and drew acclaim, producing the popular songs: "Mother And Child Reunion", "Me And Julio Down By The Schoolyard", and "50 Ways To Leave Your Lover". Paul Simon reunited with Art Garfunkel for several tours and the 1981 Concert In Central Park.

In 1986, Paul Simon released his most successful and acclaimed album: Graceland, incorporating South African influences. The single: "You Can Call Me Al", became one of his most successful singles. His next album: The Rhythm Of The Saints (1990), was critically acclaimed and performed well on the music charts. Also he gave a second Concert In The Park in 1991, this time without Art Garfunkel, which was attended by half a million people.
In 1997, Paul Simon's album: Songs From The Capeman, received mixed reviews. Some critics praised the combination of Doo-Wop, Rockabilly and Caribbean music that the album contained, but the album didn't live up to expectations, and for the first time in his career he did not reach the Top 40 of the Billboard music charts. He followed that up with a stage play of the same name that he produced and opened on January 29, 1998. As with the album the stage show didn't meet expectations losing $11 million.
In the 21st century, Paul Simon continued to record and tour. In the aftermath of the September 1, 2001 attacks in America, he sang his song: "Bridge Over Troubled Water", on a multi-network broadcast to benefit the September 11 Telethon Fund: "America: A Tribute To Heroes". His later albums, including: You're The One (2000), So Beautiful Or So What (2011) and Stranger To Stranger (2016), introduced him to new generations.
In 2007, Paul Simon received the first annual Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song. Named in honor of George and Ira Gershwin, this award recognized the profound and positive effect of popular music on the world's culture. Paul Simon said: "I am grateful to be the recipient of the Gershwin Prize and doubly honored to be the first. I look forward to spending an evening in the company of artists I admire at the award ceremony in May. I can think of a few [artists] who have expressed my words and music far better than I [have]. I'm excited at the prospect of that happening again. It's a songwriter's dream come true".
Among the performers who paid tribute to Paul Simon were Stevie Wonder, Alison Krauss, Jerry Douglas, Lyle Lovett, James Taylor, Dianne Reeves, Marc Anthony, Yolanda Adams and Ladysmith Black Mambazo. The event was professionally filmed and broadcast and was later released on DVD as: Paul Simon And Friends.
Paul Simon retired from touring in 2018, but continued to record music. A new album: Seven Psalms, was released in May 2023.
