    I think you have fallen in a trap that many people fall into, without Kate being weird you guys feel cheated.
    This album is incredible.

      @Missjunebugfreak Před 11 měsíci +1

      I almost fell into this trap as well after hearing Hounds of Love first and then expecting everything else to be on that level of weird. Thankfully I went back and listened to her music in chronological order and was able to appreciate the beauty of her less "weird" stuff. The Sensual World may not be a big favourite of mine but I think it's one of Kate's most lush, emotional albums.

    • @andreygirl
      @andreygirl Před 9 měsíci

      it's an excellent album, but the production overwhelms kate's voice a lot of the time and makes it a difficult listen for some people. it's not as fun to listen to kate when you can't hear her stunning vocals very well.

      @@andreygirl yeah that's the issue I've always had with this album. The production is lush but at times Kate's voice gets buried in the mix which makes is a detriment to the music cause Kate has a remarkable voice and it's one of the strongest aspects of her sound. I really wish the 2018 remaster had fixed this problem.

    ‘Hounds of love’ and ‘The Dreaming’ are probably her most experimental but there isn’t a straightforward Kate Bush album. The first few albums are great, culminating in the jewel that is ‘Never forever’ where she starts to assume production control. Her latter albums like ‘Aerial’ are more soundscapes which will probably need a few listens in the background before trying to pick out individual tracks but it definitely rewards the effort. Well done for your considered, thoughtful reactions.

    Heads We’re Dancing is actually written about the time one of Kate’s friends met a charming stranger at a dance only to later realise he was Oppenheimer, the inventor of the atomic bomb. It remains one of my all time fave Kate cuts 🙏

    A fair reaction. Most don’t see this album as being quite as strong as The Dreaming and Hounds of Love. Kate herself said this was her most feminine album, and it is certainly more accessible than the two previous albums
    With an Irish mother, Kate was brought up a catholic and attend a catholic convent school. Her two older brothers were probably her main world music influences due to the traditional music they played while she was growing up. Paddy collected and played (including on many of her recordings) all kinds of world music instruments.

    I wouldn't exactly say The Sensual World is part of a trilogy with The Dreaming and HoL. Never for Ever is where Kate began experimenting heavily with sonic textures and was a bridge from the more singer-songwriter sound of her first two albums and the experimental The Dreaming and Hounds of Love. I would recommend listening to Never for Ever next or maybe The Kick Inside first and then Never for Ever

    Re: your opening comment. In my gay experience, listening to Kate Bush basically guarantees you action 🤣. I agree in her creative trilogy, this is my least favorite, but still a huge fan. I'm not sure where you're going next for reactions but Aerial and 50 Words for Snow, much later in her discography, are great listens, and very distinct from her 80s output. Once you've listened to all her albums, Director's Cut is also a cool listen...it's reworked versions of many songs she previously recorded.

    A good review. Pretty much what I thought when I first heard it when it was released. I will say that it deepens with more listens and I do like it now. But for for me Hounds of Love and The Dreaming are stronger.
    Just a few notes on some of the songs for you:
    The words on Sensual World are slightly nonsense. Kate initially had put the Molly Bloom soliloquy from the James Joyce's book Ulysses to music. But his estate wouldn't let her use it. They later changed their minds and a different version (with changed words) is on Kate's album Director's Cut.
    The backing vocals on a few songs - particularly Rockets Tail - are provided by a Bulgarian folk group doing 'throat singing'. Its an incredible and unique sound.
    And finally, the extra track Walk Straight Down The Middle was the B-side when The Sensual World song was released as a physical single on vinyl. It was later added to some of the digital versions of the album. It's not a particularly strong track in my opinion.
    I hope you continue with your Kate Bush journey, there are some good things for you still to find.

  • @newkkl
    @newkkl Před 2 lety +2

    I love that you’re continuing with Kate! Walk Straight Down the Middle was a B-Side, but I think on one of the reissues it got tagged on as an extra track. Rocket’s Tail! The angelic voices on this track, plus Deeper Understanding and Never Be Mine are the Trio Bulgarka, a female Bulgarian folk music group. The Bulgarian State Folk Singers had a massive worldwide set of albums around the time TSW came out, so you can probably find those if you look for them. As with other Kate albums you can dig into the stories of the songs a bit, but I would agree that it would be difficult for anyone, no matter how much genius they possess, to top Hounds of Love. I think Kate deliberately went in a different direction to change things up.

    When I first started listening to Kate I felt like you about this album, it didn't stand out to me and felt kinda meh but now it's grown to be my favourite. I actually think it's the opposite of what you're saying in a sense, it's not that easy to get into because it doesn't have as many catchy melodies, things that stand out and tempo as the other albums, so at first listen it may seem a bit dull and everything kinda sounds the same. But I find that the more I listen the more I enjoy it. The album has such a beautiful, etheral atmosphere/soundscape. I love dancing to it or having it on in the background as I paint or something in the evening.
    My favorite is also Rocket's Tail (the acapella background singing is done by a Bulgarian vocal trio btw), but I also love This woman's work, The fog, Reaching out and Never be mine.

      The Fog is transcendent. I feel like time stops for me when I hear that song.
      This album also didn't wow me much when I first heard it because it felt a little too tame in comparison to The Dreaming, Hounds of Love, and Never For Ever. It's grown on me a lot since then and i feel now as I'm at the age when Kate recorded it that I can relate more to the songs than I did when I was in my early 20s.

    Kate wasn't happy with the 80's sound not aging well (the drum sound in particular) so she re-recorded some of the songs from The Sensual World and The Red Shoes on Director's Cut. Given your reaction to this one, if you want more you should probably go back to the one right before The Dreaming, Never Forever. But prepare yourself to NOT get any more Hounds of Love.

      Kate Bush loves sex, she believes that sex is good for us, and she wants everyone to be able to experience sex as the life enhancing and generative force that, at its best, sex is. As such sex is a part of the sensual world, that includes anything and everything that we experience through our senses, and process emotionally, rather than via intellectual abstractions. In one interview she remarked that she thought of sexuality as something that is projected, whereas sensuality is something that we experience. It's a pretty solid observation, and invaluable to understanding Kate's supposed 'weirdness' and eccentricity, which are in fact illustrative of her openness and sensitivity to the world around her.
      I love many of the songs on this album as much as anything in her oeuvre, but I won't compare it to her other albums in order to give it a ranking. The world is obsessed with lists and charts and scores and preferences, which I understand, but regard as antithetical to art. Rather than asking yourself whether you prefer this one to that, free yourself of the need to compare them and listen instead to what the artist is trying to say in each work. It's a much more fulfilling way of listening to music. You will still have your favourites, but they will emerge more naturally, more sensually, perhaps, than by some artificial system of comparison and scoring. Just a thought, a suggestion for you to consider. It's fantastic that you are listening to and appreciating the sublime artistry of Kate Bush, an artist I have loved and admired since my twelve year old self was first enthralled by her extraordinary voice and imagination, in the song that introduced her to the world, Wuthering Heights. It's very moving to see new generations of young people being as captivated by her as I was, almost fifty years ago. She is one of those artists who, once heard, will stay with you for a lifetime.

    I’m in your boat: definitely in the third position compared to Dreaming and Hounds. Some amazing material when she is in less strictly melodic quiet rock mode (like Rocket and especially Heads, a banging dance track with an incredibly audacious conceit). PS - that weird thing that popped up during the title track’s lyrics is an excerpt from James Joyce’s classic novel Ulysses, a character of which she’s portraying in the song (aka her huge first hot, Wuthering Heights).

    You are missing something. The Sensual World is a song based on Molly Bloom's soliloquy at the end of Ulysses by Irish writer, James Joyce. At the time of writing she asked James Joyce's estate if she could use the soliloquy and they refused. So she changed up a few of the lyrics and changed the title to The Sensual World. Years later Kate revisited tracks from The Sensual World and The Red Shoes and rerecorded them, the album is called Director's Cut and on that album is a track called Flower of the Mountain, which is a re-working of The Sensual World track, only this time she was given permission to use the soliloquy and the title.

    You've got to ask yourself; what is the purpose of experiment? To me, it is to further your understanding. If The Dreaming and Hounds of Love can be considered experimental, then this album is making use of things that were discovered through those experiments. HOL is my favorite album (by anyone) but objectively speaking, the songs on this one are richer and more mature than anything she has done before. Listen loud in open air with a real stereo system. If you can get the neighbors to call the cops on you, then you're doing it right. Headphones are cool but this needs space. Same as HOL. If you're not hearing it loud enough so that you can feel it also, you're cheating yourself.
    If you compare the cover art of The Dreaming to this cover art, it kinda' says it all. This is not abstract art, it's portraiture. (comparatively speaking)
    Track 2, Love and Anger, is possibly my favorite tune by her. It took a lot of listening for it to strike me a certain way. I wore this album out for years, starting with the year it came out. Still love it... Rocket's Tail started out as my favorite track and got taken down by the other tracks bit by bit as they washed over me. Reaching Out climbed from the bottom to nearly the top over the years.

    Until now, I thought this album had 11 tracks, with the actual closing track my favorite on the album. Don't know why the Spotify version omitted it. But I love every track except Reaching Out (one of her worst songs ever) and Deeper Understanding (which is good but subpar).
    My ranking is: 1. HOL, 2. Aerial (Disk 2), 3. Sensual World, 4. The Dreaming, 5. The Red Shoes, 6. NFE, 7. 50 Words for Snow, 8. Aerial (Disk 1), 9. Lionheart, 10. TKI.
    Her next, The Red Shoes, is similar to this one but much more pop so you probably won't like it lol. Every track is a very upbeat Love and Anger-type song except for a couple of ballads.
    But I'd definitely recommend Disk 2 of Aerial. That would complete 'the essential Kate Bush' IMO. In a recent interview she said that HOL are her two best albums and I would agree, despite most fans picking Dreaming and HOL.

    Maybe because I listened to The Sensual World first back in the day, then traced back to Hounds of Love, then The Dreaming, so I didn't feel so let down by The Sensual World like you seemed to. I think that by that point in her career, she didn't feel that she had to be so out there like with The Dreaming, or balance her commercial appeal with authenticity like with Hounds of Love. So The Sensual World sounds more mellow and mature, simply because that's what she wanted to be then.

    You must also make a video reaction of the others three earlier albums " The kick inside", "Lionheart" and Never for ever, just remembering that they were made in 1978 and 1980

    I would rank The Dreaming as my least favorite. I think Hounds of Love unquestionably one of the best albums of all time - so the clear winner of the three you compare. And certainly most adventurous musically.
    That said, The Sensual World is hands down the one I listen to the most. I’d recommend spending time just listening to it deeply and let it wash over you. Put on some good headphones, go on a long walk and just listen start to finish. It’s certainly the most cohesive of the albums you are looking at.
    (FWIW, I think the more you listen to Love & Anger, the more it grows on you. Especially the lyrics. But definitely it’s the most “commercial” song on the album. So while you’re right that - by Bush standards - it might be lacking, it is a pretty fantastic pop song of the era. I think you’ll come to like it more than you do now.)

      To clarify - I don’t dislike The Dreaming. In fact, I love a lot of it and it’s certainly more challenging and experimental than Sensual World. It’s not a knock against it, but I rarely listen to it in its entirety.

    Don’t know how you can properly listen talking all the way through and just reading the lyrics …
    It’s frustrating as this is a subtle album where the benefits are in the small details and texture ….

      I don't just read the lyrics and the reason you hear me talking is because I cut out the parts where I'm just silently sitting there not adding anything to the video.
