    Very cool story behind "All the Love". Kate came home one day and listened to messages on her answering machine. The machine had malfunctioned and only caught the last few seconds of each message, so she listened to people just saying goodbye. It inspired the song and she even included it at the end.
    For the heavy grieving parts of Houdini, she ate chocolate and drank milk to help add more of a phlegmy note to her voice.
    Without The Dreaming, there would have been no Hounds of Love.

    The title track of "The Dreaming" is about the Aboriginal concept of granular time -- it can be broken down and down and down into smaller moments, like quantum mechanics of Time itself. The brilliance here is the way the backing vocals sing a broken, stuttering word, "Dreamtime". This is what Frank Lloyd Wright called "organic design", in which form and function are one. Amazing.
    "Get Out of My House": Kate writes from the point of view of the Overlook Hotel in "The Shining". Can ya dig it, or does it blow your fuses?

    • @judithweiss6727
      @judithweiss6727 Před 2 lety +1

      Rolf Harris plays digeridoo on "The Dreaming" song. He had a 60s hit with "Tie Me Kangaroo Down Sport" - such a hit I heard it on the radio on rotation in Texas.

  • @LightSearch
    @LightSearch Před 2 lety +17

    I know I'll be the only one suggesting this, but if you want to know how "The dreaming" would sound if it was produced by Kate on acid, check Nunsexmonkrock by Kate's evil sister Nina Hagen. If this wasn't enough to persuade you, check the album cover.
    As much as I love "The dreaming", Nunsexmonkrock aged much better. It's the kind of spooky that will leave you wondering what hit you.

    My favourite Kate Bush album. The inventive creativity here is stunning. She has more accessible albums, which are fantastic, such as "The Red Shoes", "The Kick Inside" and "The Sensual World", but this one took advantage of the then-new cutting-edge technology of digital sampling, and she used it with an intelligence matched only by Peter Gabriel's fourth album and by "The Flat Earth" by Thomas Dolby.

    Great reaction to a great album - the first album she fully produced herself (at the age of 23/24). I strongly recommend your next Kate Bush reaction should be to the third of her middle trio of albums, ‘The Sensual World’. She wrote for and produced this album to introduce more female energies and perspectives compared to what she said were the more male influenced earlier albums.
    I hope you guys are treating yourselves to a viewing her music videos for the full Kate Bush experience. They can be too distracting to allow for a thorough first listen track review. But they are their own art form showcasing her dancing, storytelling and just ‘out there’ production. For example, having now heard the Sat in Your Lap track have a look at her video, which Kate herself said was her “she’s gone crazy” video.

    Btw The Dreaming is a very weird album. When I first listened to it I was 15 and I hated it so much that I didn't listen to any Kate Bush music for months! It was only after a long time that I gave the album another chance and it just grew on me so much! It's become one of my all-time favorites. So don't trust your first impression of it so much, this album is definitely a grower.
    Ps: play the ending of "leave it open" backwards, you won't regret it ;)

    I have listening to Kate Bush since Running Up That Hill was released in 1985. I love The Dreaming. I have often said the seemingly contradictory statement that Hounds of Love is the best overall album of the 80's, but The Dreaming is the best Kate Bush album of the 80's. I especially love Night of the Swallow and Get Out of My House, which has really grown on me.

    The funny thing about this re-evaluation of KB by internet social influencers is that in the 80's they would have been the yobbos scoffing at her music! The people who loved her back then were arty outsiders, and goth girls in vintage clothes (long before thrifting became fashionable).

    honestly, every kate bush album is incredible. id love to see what you think of Aerial, which she released in 2005 after a 13 year hiatus. the production is so much more bare and spacious and she sings a lot more straight (also i think the piano ballad may be from there) - its a double album so maybe it could be a 2 parter??

    It's good that you chose to review this album. David Gilmour is credited with first discovering Kate Bush. She was a teenager at the time. I couldn't hear 'The Dreaming' song properly because you talked over most of it. I could not hear what you said about aborigines that Kate Bush could not say now. It sounded like talking about how aborigine Australians could 'tell ants stalling'. This song was an attempt by her musically to get an aborigine sound to it. It features the digeridoo instrument I think. You also talked all over Houdini about the sound of a dog! I feel you must have listened to these tracks before so you don't need to listen to them in the review, but your audience does. Just pause the song when you want to talk.

    So Jerry, should I stop saving up to buy you a wind up chimpanzee clapping cymbals toy to keep you distracted during the boring bits of really good songs the rest of us really enjoy?

      How luxurious is the chimpanzee that you'd need to save up for it? If you're offering to buy me a 24k monkey, I would appreciate it!

    Can we just say, nobody 'stole' lands off anybody, they didn't OWN the land, they lived there. They no more own the land than I own the wood next to me.

      So by your logic the British were completely justified in colonizing and subjugating the native people just because they "lived there"? Was the Trail of Tears also justified because native peoples in the Eastern United States just "lived there"? How about the people who lived in the Congo under Leopold? They just "lived there", the Belgium government had every right to massacre and maim the locals so that they could harvest rubber, right? Pick up a history book not written by Prager U and educate yourself before posting asinine comments on my videos. - Jerry

      @@BoyTimeChannel Another example of an American education, it was actually the Indians that started the massacring at Jamestown (triggered by raiding parties for food), they weren't the innocent victims; this tends to alters peoples attitudes; and no, they didn't own the land, even if they did live there, if you feel that bad, you give up your home and everything your families have to them, no? thought not.
      The empire came about by trade with the world and the FULL cooperation of the locals, do you honestly think a tiny island with a small army can 'conquer' the a quarter of the entire glob? don't be so asinine.
      'your channel'? your 1000k channel, I saw a kate bush vid pop up in my recommendation, turned out to be a couple of really boring monotone arrogant ignoramuses that knows nothing about history, even their own.
      Most of the world is now based on the British empire, especially western first world countries and it freed billions upon billions of people from slavery then and forever, whatever bad it did, it did way more good - you're welcome.
      now stop being a woke virtue signaller and get a proper education.
