"The Kick Inside" is inspired by "The Ballad Of Lizie Wan" which is Scottish / English in origin. In the ballad, Lizie told her brother about the incest pregnancy so he kills her to hide the crime. The truth is soon discovered and he is driven from home.
"The Ballad Of Lizie Wan" is directly referenced in an early demo recording of "The Kick Inside" in the second verse: "You and me on the bobbing knee / Welling eyes from identifying with Lizie Wan's story." The final version of "The Kick Inside" replaced that verse.
Peter Gabriel and Kate Bush, "Don't give up", needs to be on your bucket list, 6 minutes of pure talent.

Cathy's not just lost...she's dead! Her ghost returns to his estate, looking for him.
The reason Cathy is knocking at Heathcliff's window, is that she is a freaking ghost at this point, come back to drag him into death with her. Compare this with the lyrics in Auroras "It happened quiet". It's the same theme of love too wild for death to hold back. And not the healthy kind of love.
It's from Chapter 3 of the novel, where Cathy's ghost appears to Lockwood about 20 years after her death. There's a video in which I read Chapter 3 on youtube.
Having been alive when The Kick was released in 1978 you have to realise that Disco ruled the charts. Suddenly this young woman with an amzing voice, new sound and very dark subject material burst on the scene.
Also there is no gay theme in Cloud Busting but Kate had a song addressing exactly that called Kashka from Bagdad.

The man with the child in his eyes was written by her when she was 13, recorded with money from David Gilmour when she was 16, and won the Ivor Novello for songwriting when she was 18… she’s astonishing, get all the albums, start on track one, lock the door, and come out different.
I've always interpreted the man to be her father, who has the child he loves (Kate) in his eyes. Probably the best written song of the decade (and the 70s was FULL of songwriters) not least due to her age when she wrote it.

This Woman's Work*
The tragedy of Babushka (grandmother) is that when the husband declares his love for the unknown admirer he is actually falling in love with his own wife again for all the reasons he loved her in the first place. But she doesn't understand this and instead thinks she "catches" him in the act of adultery. So the event that actually is their love reignited is also the end of their marriage. That is the glass smashing at the end. The ruin of everything.
Kate Bush brought me here. I grew up with Kate Bush as a young child and a teenager. It's so wonderful to see a new generation discovering her. I loved your reactions, so true. I would recommend you watch the videos that go along with these songs. Especially Cloudbusting, that will answer a lot of questions.

The sound you hear in Babooska is breaking glass. It was sampled from the fairlight synthesizer. Kate is one of the pioneers of the use of that synth.
Cloudbusting is based on a book about the very close relationship between psychiatrist and philosopher Wilhelm Reich and his young son, Peter, told from the point of view of the mature Peter.
In the video the boys father played by Donald Sutherland is a scientist who has invented a machine that makes rain. The government don't like this and arrest him and destroy his research. Unaware the machine still exists. When travelling in the car in which the government are taking him away he gestures to his son to start the machine and make it rain. Brilliant stuff.
I feel like Kate is one of those artists you should do album reactions to. Each of the albums has a very unique feel to it.
Kate Bush has such a warm comforting voice. It’s like hearing a mother sing you stories and lullabies to help you rest your weary head.

Cloudbusting is actually not a gay song at all. It is a biographical recounting of a controversial psychoanalyst who claims he invented cloudbusting and eventually was arrested by the government. He had a very close relationship with his son, so Kate Bush tells the story from his perspective. The actual Kate Bush gay song is 1978’s Kashka from Baghdad.
That's all correct but I don't think the lyric "Your son's coming out" is a mistake. She would've been well aware of the double meaning. The phrase "coming out" has been around since the 70s, probably even earlier. But yes, Kashka is THE gay song and one of my faves!

Hounds of Love, the song -- contains my favorite musical moment with lyrics ever. "I found a fox, caught by dogs, he let me take him in my hands. His little heart, it beat so fast, and I'm ashamed of running away."

Most of The Kick Inside album was wrote when Kate was 15, she signed with EMI at 16 and they made her wait until she was 18 before any music was released. The released version of "the man with the child in his eyes" was the original demo recorded when she was 16
I will never get over that.
No wonder she decided to DROP Wuthering Heights when the time had come to launch and she'd already grown to that level of writing. Her discarded songs from 13-18 are likely beyond GOLD. She seemed to do school, working at the piano and later done dance classes for the videos she wanted to be able to perform.

You seem to have missed the point in "The Kick Inside", it is about a sister who kills herself after becoming pregnant to her brother. "Your sister I was born, you must lose me like an arrow ..."
I'm sure someone has probably mentioned this already by Kate said in an interview that she based "Wuthering Heights" on a TV adaptation of the book, not the book itself. She only read the book after she wrote the song. It's widely believed that the house the book is based on is on is called "Top Withens" and is on the moors outside of Howarth, West Yorkshire where the writer of the book, Emily Brontë, lived. It's near where I live and you can walk out to the house, but wear some wellies!

I was 14 when I heard Wuthering Heights spinning and twirling out of a tinny radio in the playground. I fell in love in that moment and now, at almost 60, I still love her. She is utterly unique. So happy to see you "getting" her. She can still move me to tears and I cannot even begin to imagine how many times I've heard her entire catalogue. Immerse yourself in her. You won't regret it x

Lovely reaction! The selection of songs here seems to be a bit skewed towards her first album, The Kick Inside (I believe your dad's very into it haha). About 4 of the songs you listened to were written when she was just a teen. All that's incredible, but there's a lot more mindblowing stuff in her later catalogue. I hope you would do an album reaction! "Hounds of Love" (1985) is the place to start!
Hounds of Love is her most balanced album, commercial and arty.
The Dreaming, now that is an album that you need to brace your self for. As her first self produced album, its about as full on and unfiltered Kate Bush as you ever going to get. I'm not surprised Bjork rates it, I have also heard it said that Tori Amos based here entire career on track "Suspended in Gaffa" and after hearing that, I can't unhear it.

Kate's a genius. There is a lot of details and little things inside of every one of her songs. If you're into literature and theater, Kate Bush is for you!
Cloudbusting was inspired by a true story. She actually contacted the "boy" the song is about (I think his name is Peter Reich, if I'm not mistaken) and he loved the song and gave his blessing, which makes it a lot more special.
About The Kick Inside, is about incest and is inspired by a old folk tale.
And Babooshka, she heard the word and thought it was funny and wrote a whole song around it, she then released it and found out babooshka meant "old lady" or "grandmother" or something like that
Kate is like this, she writes and sings about these kind of things. She has a song about being "intimate" with a snowman (Misty), one about a widow haunting the man that murdered her husband in their wedding day (The Wedding List), and another one dacing with... Hitler (Heads We're Dancing)... yeah, is actually really cool lol
She plays a lot of with her characters, and different situations in her stories. As a gay literature student I'm totally obssesed with her 😭

Thank you for reactions - just a bit more background on "The Kick Inside" it was inspired by a traditional folk song called "Lucy Wan" the sister is made pregnant by her brother so in order to cause a family scandal she decides to commit suicide, so this song is basically her suicide note to her brother. The point about when "The Sun and The Moon meet on yon hill" is that's impossible for them to ever do so.
There's no one else I know who would make the decision to have the title track of their debut album to be about incest, Kate is fearless and committed to what she wants - take for example the release of Wuthering Heights EMI wanted to release James and the Gold Gun but Kate resisted and said that she wanted Wuthering Heights instead. In the end EMI agreed only because they thought that it would be a massive flop and would teach her a lesson.
One extra point about Wow is that in the official video Kate makes sure that you understand the guy reference by patting her bottom when she sings the relevant line from the song.
If I remember rightly the BBC initially re framed that portion of the music video so you wouldn't see what Kate was doing with her hand.

You seem to have missed the point in "Wuthering Heights" that Cathy is a ghost returning to Heathcliff to possess his soul ("oh it gets dark, it gets lonely, on the other side from you", "let me have, let me grab your soul away").

I didn't like Kate's voice for years because it is so theatrical, particularly in this performance-she sounded too much to me like Bernadette Peters in a stage musical. Kate quickly became my second-favorite musical artist after I began to listen to and interpret her lyrics from Hounds of Love songs, Breathing, This Woman' Work and other exceptional 'story' songs.
It was years before I realized that Kate is *not* singing straightforwardly in Wuthering Heights. It *is* a musical theatre performance of a sort in that her vocal performance was contrived to convey an uncomfortable and haunting listening experience-she is Cathy, after all, a vengeful, lusty ghost who is stalking Heathcliff and who ultimately is the cause of his demise. And it makes absolute sense. How could anyone possibly faithfully deliver an impression ("It's me, I'm Cathy!") of Cathy from Wuthering Heights with a lovely voice? She absolutely terrorized Heathcliff, drove him mad and lured him to his death. Taking all that in mind, Kate performed her song with a vocal that communicates Cathy's maddening character. It's really the 'sparkly' music that somewhat undermines the terror of the situation, but that contradiction also is what makes the bansheelike nature of the song more interesting than something that is arranged to sound scary or ominous.

I discovered Tori Amos in 1996--the same year I graduated from high school, deeply damaged because of how I was treated by my peers from middle school through high school. Tori's music appealed to me (and still does) in a way no other music ever had before. It had nothing to do with my sexual orientation, but as I learned more about Tori as a person, I learned that she came of age playing piano in gay bars in Washington, D.C. (where I grew up and now live), and I learned that she had a very large following among gay misfits like me. I was magnetized to her music without anything LGBT-related in mind, but I learned that she has always been a supporter of LGBT people and surrounded herself with them, and that did end up being empowering.
I only discovered Kate about a decade or so ago because *so many* Tori Amos fans told me I *had* to give her a chance and would love her. They proved to be right.
The point of mentioning Tori above is to say that I became a Tori fan because of her music itself, not because of anything having to do with gay issues or gay people. And I became a Kate fan because of her music, not because of anything having to do with gay issues or gay people. I was born in 1978--the year Wuthering Heights was released--and to my memory, I never heard any music by Kate Bush until I was about 30 years old. So I wasn't there during the Kate zeitgeist and if she always had a large gay following, I don't really know anything about that and I don't think of her in those terms. I think of her only as a brilliantly unique artist--and that's about it. I don't know anything about her personally except that she has a son named Bertie and she was attacked for saying something supportive of Theresa May as the UK prime minister several years ago, as people questioned her politics. If she's an LGBT ally, that's amazing--it's honestly news to me. If she's on the LGBT identity spectrum, that's cool--it's honestly irrelevant to me, though, because she has such an exceptional artistic vision and heart and mind that I think of her as a standalone human being who doesn't really belong in any group such as gay or straight or anything else. Some of her music has included bold sexual and sensual references, always from the level of human empathy, not about politics (to my knowledge), and to me, that's the best kind of person any person could ever be, just working to understand other people and respect them no matter who they are.
I don't really understand your suggestion about "gays...driving her current resurgence in 2022." Would you mind elaborating on that thought? I don't see it. I'm not really a fan of Stranger Things, but it seems very clear to me that Kate's sudden popularity among younger people is due entirely to her music being part of that show's soundtrack--and that has nothing to do with LGBT issues to my knowledge. I work with some younger people on the Millennial/Gen Z cusp who have been asking me if I know about Kate Bush because of that show, and these aren't LGBT people. They're just people who think Running Up That Hill "sounds cool" and want to know if her other music is as "cool." (I don't understand why they wouldn't just listen to other music by her and make their own decisions...)
As a gay man who came of age at a time when being gay was considered not a crime but unspeakable in "polite company," and at a time when being a gay man was equated with dying from AIDS, I always have been and always will be an advocate and at times an activist for LGBT equality.
I'm also an artist and I appreciate art for art's sake. My favorite artist of any medium is Tori Amos on the basis of her musical brilliance and her poetic writing and her insights. My favorite visual artist is Marc Chagall, who was married to a succession of women and was not gay. I appreciate his art because it moves me. I have a master's degree in creative writing and few of my favorite authors are gay or write about "gay issues." I just appreciate art on the basis of tapping into something moving or arousing or articulating something deeply human or otherworldly, and while I do appreciate people who are activists or advocates for equality, I find any kind of politics to be a reductive level of human experience as compared with empathy and spirituality and sensuality (as opposed to sex acts)--areas of life Kate, Tori, Chagall, Faulkner, Morrison, Saramago, Ishiguro and others address with their creative works.

I just got to the part with his speculation that Cloudbusting has a gay theme at its center because it's about a son's relationship with his father, and the reviewer picked up on the line "like your son coming out." I think that's a completely normal and natural misinterpretation of that lyric--that is a much more obvious seeming meaning in today's lingo than Kate's actual meaning. The song is so cryptic that I think anyone listening to it would pick out any lines that they can make any sense of and try to put the puzzle together. He also was struck by the line "I can't hide you from the government." That and "like your son coming out" do stand out among the lyrics and I totally get why anyone would begin an interpretation with those lines. When a writer is as enigmatic as Kate is with this song's lyrics, I wouldn't judge someone for making major misinterpretations based on a first listen with no other information available to them. Songs like "This Woman's Work" are much more self-evident in their meanings based on the lyrics alone, and songs like "Wuthering Heights" are very straightforward if you're familiar with the novel, but if you're not familiar with the novel, it's a totally bonkers song.
Ironically, Wilhelm Reich, who the song is about (the father who was arrested and died in prison for inventing the cloudbuster and doing therapy based on "orgone" sexual energy he believed he had discovered) was aggressively homophobic.
Yet aside from being anti-gay, he coined the term "sexual revolution" and he encouraged "free love," and he had free love with his patients.
I highly recommend starting with The Dreaming! Hounds of Love/The 9th Wave is my favorite by her but you should work up to it!

It's amazing how young she was when she wrote most of these - she wrote the man with the child in his eyes when she was 13!!! I would recommend her album 'the dreaming', it's really kate bush at the peak of her weirdness

The kick inside songs tells about a sister who is pregnant by her brother, and in the end she suicides herself, a very strong song with powerful emotions and a delicate meaning...that surely sometimes happened worldwide in the past and present and future. Re Cloudbusting, it was based on a true story, yes the father was arrested by the government for "experiments" with orgone accumulators (see the Hawkwind song about that device) and cloud busting, the son does seems to have come out as gay years later, so a deliberate reference.
I was 10 when I first heard Kate Bush in 1979 and she was immediately a huge part of my life ever since. It was a joy to watch you discover her and speak about her lyrics and the accompaniments. I always experience something new with her songs even after all these decades and you made some connexions I had not. When interpreting her songs, it helps to treat each like a mini play in which she has taken on a character and is signing from that point of view.

Can I suggest you listen to the second half of the Hounds Of Love album? It's called The Ninth Wave and it's a suite of songs about a girl who has fallen overboard and is lost in the water at night. The songs reflect her emotional states as she struggles to stay conscious. She hallucinates, dreams, even has out of body experiences… it's so beautiful and very powerful. Very cinematic. I think you'll absolutely love it!

"This Woman's Work" is a song sung from the perspective of a "father to be", trying to deal with his wife going through serious difficulties in pregnancy. The end is a bit ambiguous, but at least the baby survives.

Thanks so much for not just a reaction but an exploration of Kate’s work! I remember being taken by surprise by Kate’s first appearance on Top Of The Pops early in 1978 with her debut single “Wuthering Heights”. It totally blew me away and I immediately fell in love with her and had to go out and buy her debut album “The Kick Inside” which is still a favorite of mine. Subscribed!

Kate is an amazing artist, a true original, a genius. I'm happy to see your appreciate her artistry, I was ensorcelled in 1978 when I saw her on Saturday Night Live singing "A Man with a Child in His Eyes". It's worth searching out because the quality is excellent. It's on dailymotion, Kate Bush - Full Saturday Night Live Performance 1978. I hope you do a deep dive on Prince, he was also a true original and genius like Kate. Prince & Kate were born a month apart and have a similar trajectory, both theatrical complete artists and child prodigies. Two of my very favorite artists.
Her masterpiece may be The Ninth Wave, the suite of songs that makes up the second half of Hounds of Love. And I'm partial to The Dreaming, the album on which she fully embraced her weirdness, a bit more challenging, but it has tons of staying power because of it. And you're right, i remember exactly where it was and when it was that her voice fist came on the radio back in 78 with Wuthering Heights. Not that many artists that can provoke this sort of earthquake.

This was such a joy to watch, I actually got a bit emotional. Listening to her songs for the first time is magical. Some of your interpretations of the songs were not totally accurate, especially on The Kick Inside...but I still really love your interpretations! All but two of the songs were from the same two albums, which I love, but maybe next time mix it up a bit and try to take one from maybe every album? Some of my favs are Breathing, Night of the Swallow, Sunset and Deeper Understanding! Or maybe do a full album reaction, and listen chronologically!❤
I mean he was way off on most of them, but I guess a song is what it means to you not necessarily what the writer intends.
I’ve never heard anything like Kate Bush and that’s why I love her music. She was continuously writing out of the box and different music, that is just incredible. It’s just crazy to me that at about 16 she had about 200 songs written. That’s unheard of even today especially at that age. The songs that you listed are some of my favorites, especially Night Of The Swallow.
Yes some of your interpretations were interesting. But as Kate herself has said she doesn't mind if people put their own meaning to her songs. Once out in the World she feels that every one owns the songs and can get their own meaning from them. Even if it is not what she originally intended.

I hope you've had a chance to watch the music videos that go with some of the songs, especially "Cloudbusting" which is a whole narrative film compressed into a music video, and "Heavy People" and "Babooshka" are lots of fun.
your reaction is perfect. Kate's songs are such a unique incredible masterpiece. The lyrics along with her voice are genuinely amazing. I grew up in the eighties listening to kate, now my kids are discovering her talent through Stranger Things. I'm glad she gets the recognition she deserves.

For some reason I thought you had already reacted to Kate Bush. Maybe because you’re from the UK? But yes, Kate has always been a queen. And she’s influenced so many different artists of different genres (Bjork, FKA Twigs, Florence and The Machine, Tori Amos, Marina and The Diamonds and so many more). Her albums: Hounds Of Love, The Dreaming, Never For Ever are a fantastic trio. All three are some of my favorite albums from the 80s. Her general discography is strong and unique.

She’s my fav for a reason
Bush is also worth understanding from more than "just" a songwriter's perspective. Although such a young talent, she soon took control of her work, and by the time of her 4th album was producing herself and exploring some hugely cutting-edge technologies (music tech was going through a true revolution at that time) which culminated in the 5th album, Hounds of Love. As it was vinyl, it very much fell into to two parts - the second side (The Ninth Wave, a suite of 6 songs) contains none of the hit singles, but is the pinnacle of 80s production and performance. Worth also noting that she was directing and choreographing her own videos too. Her genius has no end!

Additional Kate listening: Under The Ice (definitely inspired SOPHIE), Waking The Witch (definitely inspired SOPHIE), Morning Fog, Army Of Dreamers, Sat In Your Lap. But do listen to each album as a whole. I, fortunately, discovered her early in life and am able to see her influence everywhere from dream pop to hip-hop.

I envy you you truely exploring kate for the first time I kinda measure all music against here I was ten when wuthering heights came out (which makes me 8 years younger) I loved the story telling her voice and her dancing (trained dancer)!
