  • As an Oil Rig strikes what appears to just be a gas pocket, they begin to understand quite quickly, this is much worse than they could have imagined. Shortly after falling off the Rig, Caz wakes back up having been dragged back on to the platform by coworkers, to find that everyone around him is changing. As his coworkers are picked of one by one, monsters begin forming quite quickly. But the question is, how exactly is this happening to everyone and what did they hit? Lets discuss that in todays episode!

    I always thought the "entity" was this eldritch deep sea thing, since they don't know what exactly they hit, and at the end, you can hear a heart beat, it has a heart beat, when they drilled into it, it reacted negatively, it is also very fiberous in its base state, only becoming bloby and fleshy when it comes into contact with other living creatures where it seems to act like a cancer, with there being extra hands and heads on some blobs. And there seems to be some mimiking of deep sea creatures, with Muir having crab legs, Addiar having more of a jellyfish body. The hallucinations that you experience are most likely the enitity trying to get you to leave, it WANTS you to leave so it can also get off, as finley states, "WE can't leave, but IT can" meaning it's hallucinations are meant to get you to want return to your loved ones so it can spread

    • @dragothedragon7044
      @dragothedragon7044 Před 7 dny +45

      It also is unable to revive already dead corpses, it wants them alive, which means that they are alive and "conscious" inside those blobs
      Also it isn't an instant assimilation into the blobs, seeing how Caz does get grabbed by a tentacle at some point,
      I am assuming is that whatever they dug into was alive, and it proceeded to instinctively grabbed the drill and whatever it was attached to, since the "main mind" is able to make its fibrous tendrils at the bink of an eye. I say it either grew at rapid pace or basically began to attack the drill until it was broken, but I think it got bigger due to the amount of minds that were assimilated into the hive mind. And when it comes to the minds of the victims, it seems that they don't know or think that they are the monsters that they truly are, you see it really well with Rennik and Muir, Rennik is still angry that you are still on his rig, and Muir keeps wondering why no one will help him and why everyone is trying to get away from him

    This is unironically one of the best horror games I've ever gotten to experience. Not only do the scares hit and the tension is through the roof, but the story is freaking phenomenal. Terribly depressing but with a bittersweet ending that still leaves room for people to pull straws and theorize about.
    Also, I'm glad you brought up the possibility that Rennick wasn't infected until after the heli crashed. So many people think that the heli crashing was referencing a similar scene in the Thing Prequel where one of the members on the heli turned out to be infected,. However, in the case of Still Wakes the Deep, I don't think anyone on the heli was infected. If anything, I think Archie, the pilot of the heli, saw Caz right as he was taking off, and when he was able to get the heli to turn around, he did just that. Rennick, in a fit of rage, tried to take control from Archie in an attempt to keep it from going back to the Rig. This would thus result in the heli obviously losing its balance in the air and crashing into the rig.

      Personally I think Rennick was turning in the helicopter after Archie turned it around to go back for Caz.
      And I don't think Rennick was fighting Archie for the controls as a normal human, because Rennick doesn't have the knowledge on how to fly such a heavy helicopter in the middle of the ocean, he's an absolute bastard yes, but he's not suicidal enough to try and take over a helicopter mid-flight without even having the knowledge on how to fly it. He's the kind of guy that would've just sat his arse down yelling his ''authority'' the whole way to the rig, and then been pissy as heck the whole trip back to the mainland.

    • @coolball999
      @coolball999 Před 7 dny +42

      @@Mirvra but there would be no way he would be infected though, when the drill busted open and spread the stuff around it seems to dominate the legs, pontoons, lower deck and the main deck, but barely seen on the upper level, throughout the whole game, the only high structure affected is the rig's tower.
      helipad and rennick's office was practically untouched by the entity, so unless he went down to check (which would be before his evacuation announcement, since he isn't aware of it when he made the first one), that would take a decently long time.
      Judging from how fast it turns people, he would probably sound a little different or already turned by the time Caz reached the helipad, it's not wild to assume brodie pulled Caz out of the sea in around 5 minutes, not to mention the period where he's knocked out, in that time period dobbie completely turned and a good bit of the crew already turned to aquatic lasagna.
      So it's either him being an ass or the storm being rough+180° turn from Archie that crashed the heli.

      That actually makes a lot more sense, especially given if Rennick was already turning, Archie probably would've tried to jump ship earlier, leading to the chopper crashing elsewhere on the rig.
      Rennick only turning once off the chopper makes more sense too given we don't see any large holes on the chopper's fuselage, however the side door is unlatched making it more likely Rennick got out before changing and not the other way around.

    Based on your conclusions, I'd have to say either it lives within the oil beneath the ground or, it could have existed on the surface of the seabed, which isn't exactly as barren as we think. The whole thing is just a mass of dead organisms. Yeah we could use it for something, but if we did it would massively disrupt the ecosystem of the seabed and we just don't know enough about it.
    My point is, if the oil is organic based, perhaps it had simply subsumed that biomass. But if it did it would have choked itself out long ago. I think it was accessing the seabed and while it wasn't "rich" with life, had enough to sustain it. When the rig punched into the hole beneath, it erupted in food and quickly shot up the drill and (if it wasn't there already) down into the oil reservoir, providing it with the necessary biomass to grow like it did up the drill itself. Otherwise it doesn't explain where the fuel for that came from.
    So I think based on that, it was living on the seabed, just wherever it could, either the drill released it or fed it, but either way it got hold of the tasty and ran with it.
    Not a big thing, just thought you had a really interesting take on it.

    Roanoke, there are some flaws in your theory. You think it adds more people to itself however it has been shown several times that the changed crew members also just kill and leave the bodies. For example the second dead crew member we come across, Sunil, is up there on the deck with Muir roaming about and was presumably killed by him. The third one meanwhile is being fused with the mass of flesh that is all throughout the hull of the rig however he appears to have died before being fused. The fourth is Dobbie who is grabbed and killed in Muir's introduction and adds further proof that the people are not automatically added to the warped masses of bodies that has become of the changed nor to the main mass released by the drill. Also, several bodies can be found throughout the accommodations section that are not part of the mass but appear to have been brutally killed during the third visit to the section which further points to the changed crewmembers just straight up killing those they encounter and leaving most of the bodies alone.
    Further in various parts of the game Caz has to swim through oil and water in flooded sections, like the Pontoons, so if this were a bacteria or virus in the oil then Caz should have already changed several times over. In addition Rinnick warned Caz "not to touch the stuff all over Beira" implies he was talking about the flesh not oil given that the oil isn't all over the rig but the otherworldly flesh growths ARE which further disproves the oil theory.
    It is far more likely that whatever causes the changes to the body requires either direct contact with the flesh growths for some period of time or something like going mad while looking at it. One skippable moment is Raffs later in game who was the guy going on his first dive and is in the diving bell we bring up after the incident with the drill and is later seen as a blob of flesh poking out of it, he most likely changed while inside of the bell.

    If you want to know, how many bodies it is: Cells for 140 bodies, it doubles every 10 minutes for 12 hours -> 140 x 2 ^72 bodies. It's around 660.000.000.000.000.000.000 bodies.
    If it doubles just every 30 minutes, it's 140 bodies x 2^24, so close to 2.350.000.000 bodies, and if each weights around 80kg, it weights close to 190 million tons. That's around 140 - 170 big, blue whales. So I don't think, it splits every 10 minutes, but I can imagine, it's around 30 - 45 minutes. With 45 minutes, it still would weight around 750k tons, so it would have the size of 5 - 7 big, blue whales. 🤷‍♂

    I'm just remembering something I recently watched. To survive one of the many extinction events that hit the planet back before there was even any proper surface dwelling creatures (Lichen doesn't count) a lot of marine animals literally retreated to the abyss, and, once the danger had blown over after thousands of years or so, IIRC it was poisonous algae that polluted the upper surface of the oceans, killing pretty much everything, they returned. Now the question is, how can we know if everything that swam into the depths also came back up instead of evolving to stay in the dark? Truly, the scariest things are not those we don't know at all, but those we know just enough about to wonder about.

    • @ericlamb4501
      @ericlamb4501 Před 7 dny +4

      And on that point, slightly related to the tangent, with how often it seems to come up in breakdowns like these, whether it's movies or games, meaning someone is literally thinking of it, we don't know how ancient bacteria and viruses actually acted. Sure we've studied and learned and we have models, but we can never truly know if those are 100% accurate. For example, how our modern cells contain ancient viral code and our reproduction literally mimics virus behavior, or, frankly, how multicellular life literally only happened in the first place because of something that could have at that moment just been an accident. Maybe bacteria were really the first animals, we see it in jellyfish nowadays (Also one of the first multicellular creatures to exist FYI) that a brain is actually not even an actual requirement because life finds its way.
      It's fascinating and terrifying to think we're all basically just like Lego for life, we can be complex or not and still work out, literally gaining or removing pieces and seeing what happens.

    I blame the U.S Government for this. They wanted the oil all for themselves.

    Hey man what a great video I’m in the middle of Still Wakes The Deep. And it’s so good 9/10 so far for me. And been really intrigued what is growing on the oil rig. And what is turning them into monsters.

    This is my favourite dialogue from any game ever, being from Edinburgh, just hearing how everyone talks to each other is something that I’ve never experienced in a game before

    As soon as I saw what the game was about I knew you would cover it. This game has all elements of good bio-horror.
    Unrelated but my favorite character was Finlay. She was the true MVP. She knew the rig and it's systems from head to toe, she survived until the end on her own (which implies she endured parkouring and running her way around like Caz, despite being a 50-ish year old smoker) and she was the one with the brains and the balls to know they were doomed and needed to blow up the entire rig to protect people in the mainland. Ellen Ripley levels of badass.

    I will say this much. Knowing what a horrible and incurable disease is may not be a comfort to the infected person but that knowledge can help others by determining the best containment method to prevent spreading.
