Any year with less weeds is a great year. i have spent two different times this year being away for a week, so the weeds are winning in my garden. This fall will be a big clean up and change as we are putting in a high tunnel in Sept. The tunnel area will get a cover crop until early in March when I start seeds in the tunnel and put in some cold weather crops. God bless y'all and keep growing.

You can use amaranth leaves for stir fry. It is very nutritious. You can also use the tender stems in the stir fry.

I love your garden experiments and how you explained your corn trial. My jaw dropped when you mentioned how little time you are spending on weeding… I think it’s time I look into weed paper! It sounds very promising.
CORN WORMS - When the cobs start to form put a few drops of olive oil on the end of the cob where the silk is. I use a squeeze bottle and go down the row. You will not have worms.

I always got multiple harvests from green beans, pick them often and fertilize them is all I did.

Hi Becky, I often wonder about the bugs in the garden and what might help to get rid of them. Once my oldest child got lice from school and I happily resorted toward tea tree oil to get rid of it. We applied the oil to her scalp at night, wrapped her hair before bed in a towel and by morning she took a shower and we saw them fall off asphyxiated by the odor within. That said, what if you spread a solution of 1 part oil and 1 part soluble such as water in a sprayer to your garden potatoes, cucumber and the likes where one shall find these little creatures? Would the same phenomenon occur? Death by asphyxiation and consumption should one eat those imbibed solution leaf? Do let us know should you decide to try if you have some success! forever grateful for you to share with us any wins and success
Thanks! Early on in my gardening I used essential oils and found it a little bit tricky to get the amounts right. One time all the leaves fell off my pepper plants even with a very, very diluted solution. I've always been a bit nervous to try it after that. I rarely spray anything (even natural) in the veggie garden because it can disrupts a delicate balance. Though in the infestation bug years that may have helped. Additionally, I am quite certain that in my orchard I will have to use something too! I will have to experiment, but carefully😅

Your garden looks beautiful. I sowed lemon squash. I hope it does as good as yours. I'm growing Long Island cheese pumpkins again. They sure do take over, but so worth it.

In the northeast where I lived we call that honeynut squash. It is a yummy hybrid. None of that butternut bitter aftertaste! Love your content!

I’m on the hunt for the best spaghetti sauce and enchilada sauce recipes. In the past I’ve just canned tomato sauce and then seasoned after opening… but I’d like to do more grab and go.

I love green chili. I live in NM and you buy them in bulk and they roast them in these big roasters. Highly recommend chili rellano casserole. You just use roasted Chiles instead . It might be helpful to roast and can or freeze your Chiles if you have a lot. Some other options are green Chile lasagna and green chili stew in the winter

Our first introduction to hatch peppers was when we lived in Texas and got out of the car to walk into HEB. The smell of the peppers roasting in these huge drums outside the front of the store filled the parking lot and it smelled so good. I agree a great pepper

I do believe that this is the best garden you have had yet! I'm in missouri, and we have had an abundance of rain that has helped our garden thrive this year wondering if Arkansas has to in your area?
Yes, we had a little too much rain, then a dry spell, but over the last two months the perfect amount. I do think it helps a lot!

Looking at your mowed lawn garden border, have you considered native flowering perennial shrubs along the fence instead of lawn grass? You've started attracting some good bugs, but it takes a good chunk of plants to really attract them in numbers. Plus they look pretty and are easy to take care of (basically don't need to past first summer). If there is a native plant or habitat restoration group in your area they could provide good advice, and help acquiring plants. I have seen a marked difference in both variety and sheer number of good insects over the years as my native flowering plants come into their own. Native plants are like an orchard: it takes a few years, but the payoff is juicy 😜
Thank you! I haven't considered it, only because in my previous garden I had a flower border like along a fence line and it was hard to maintain. It ended up being more weeds than flowers. I'd love to do something like that... maybe just not against the fence :) Or I need to figure out the secret to reducing weed pressure :)
@@TheSeasonalHomestead I hear you. I was thinking more shrubs that you could snip around, or herbaceous perennials that form a dense colony so weeds can't get a hold. In my area examples might be Ocean Spray or Mock Orange, and Goldenrod or Fireweed. However you have a very different climate so just take those as picture examples not real suggestions!

Thank you! Yes, weed paper needs to be redone each year. It composts into the soil. Hopefully soon on baby... Riggs needs a buddy his age!!! :)

Corn is really unforgiving when it comes to competition, until the 6/8 leaves stage it will impact plant growth and yield big time.
Beautiful gardens as always! It’s wonderful that you finally get to enjoy it more now that you’ve conquered the pests etc. Do you have a cover crop you would recommend for raised beds for over wintering? Thank you 😊
My favorite is a mix winter rye, hairy vetch, and crimson clover. They all overwinter very well even in very cold places as long as they are started in time.

Was it rye grass you crimped, covered and used for the potatoes?
Yes, winter rye, crimson clover, and hairy vetch. Sowed it in the fall.
If you have potato beetles burn the straw after the potatoes come out. The next generation will be in the straw.

How is your orchard doing?
It's doing so much better this year! The mulch is helping a lot. We have 2 pears on one tree and 1 apple on another. Not much to show yet, but hopefully it will keep getting better.

Yes, I'd love to have bees for honey. Cam has always had a bit more interest than me, so I think someday he will take that on!

Becky I love your channel! We moved from WA state in 2020 to NE Arkansas. Shortly after I found out youre just a few hours from us. We are our 4th year into homesteading with our gaggle of children and loving it (more the ups than the downs!). Weird question, but I really like your jeans in this video. Can I ask what brand they are? I almost never shop so when I see something I like it's nice to tuck it in the back of the mind for when there is a need for an item. Thank you! If you know what the amount of square feet, or meters is of your greenhouse then can tell me what the number is?
I am also wondering how many people the amount of food that is grown in your greenhouse can feed?
I am also curious about the amount of space that is used outside to grow food?
Regarding myself I am currently filling out legal paper work to buy property, and I am a little bit concerned about the amount of space that should be used to grow food.
The high tunnel is 16ft x 96ft, about 1500 sq ft. Outside we actively use 8000-10,000 square feet of garden space depending on season. I can't give you an exact number on how many people the high tunnel would feed. We use half for seed starting and have so many other spaces there is no way to give an accurate estimate. What I can tell you is for our year's supply 10,000 square feet of garden space is enough to provide for our family of 7.
I'm curious about the corn you grow. I see there are drip pipes near them but they are not arranged individually along the rows of corn. Do you not water them at all? With us, each row of corn receives irrigation once a week and they grow fast and very healthy. In addition, there is a fertilizer pump at the top of the irrigation system, so that if a certain crop needs to be fertilized, it is done through the irrigation water.
I love that. The drip lines are all together because we've had a lot of rain lately and didn't finish setting it up properly because there wasn't a need to water. We do usually have them spread more evenly. I'm hoping to get a fertigation set up like you soon. It would definitely make things easier!

Are you going to put up another poly tunnel?
Yes! We have the tunnel but are waiting until fall to put it up when things are less busy and the weather is more pleasant.

Yes, keep them next to a sunny window and make sure to water and fertilize them!
