As a casual basketball fan, over the years, 2 women have gotten me invested & watching women's basketball, Cheryl Miller & Caitlin Clark. Bringing positive attention & new fans to the game is the most important thing for a sport. That attention improves conditions for players, encourages young athletes &, like it or not, elevates the importance & validity of that sport. Rugby is an exciting sport w/great athletes, but I doubt anyone can name one of its great players or teams w/o googling.
And requiring a championship for greatness is a bad idea. Yes some fans love stacked teams that always win, but even more fans love an underdog. Rooting for an underdog, gives us all hope we can overcome & rise above issues in our own life. Why would any great player choose to be on an underdog team again if "greatness" requires a ring? They will all choose or transfer to a handful of stacked, dominate teams & its boring to just see the same 2 or 3 teams blow everyone else away. You need underdog teams & those underdog teams need great players that want to lead them, even if they fall short of a championship.

Caitlin Clark, who admirably chose to stay close to home and bring a mediocre basketball program to prominence. And she has done so with flying colors and has had more of an impact on their success than any in women’s college basketball history. This was more difficult than leading a stacked team to titles in my opinion. If she had chosen to go to powerhouses like South Carolina, LSU, Stanford, or Connecticut (if Geno Auriemma had not recruited Paige Bueckers first) she could have easily won 3 or 4 championships at all of these schools. (She might have 6 (lol) and really upset Cheryl Swoopes.) She is that great. The same thing if she played with the same teammates on the same stacked teams that Cheryl Miller (my previous GOAT), Breanna Stewart, Diana Taurasi, Candace Parker, Maya Moore, Chamique Holdsclaw (and several others) did in their era. That would have made her a more accomplished player team wise but it wouldn’t make her any better as a player. The unfairness of this myopic “ring counting” view by many people is obviously unfair and wrong.
No women player in women's college basketball history would have dragged these mediocre Iowa teams (no disrespect meant to her fine and likable teammates) to the NCAA finals 2 years in a row. Only Miller would have even come close in my opinion. No player in history elevates her teammate's level of play to the degree that Clark does and it's not even close. No player in history has had more of an impact on the outcome of a game than Clark. No player in history has been more clutch than Clark. And no player has elevated her game in big games more often than Clark. She is the greatest scorer in women’s college basketball history and the greatest passer in women’s basketball history - college or pro. Her 3’s and especially her logo 3’s bring in a new dimension of greatness since they open up the court for her teammates and demoralize her opponents as the crowd goes crazy shifting the all important momentum to her team. And she is a great rebounder and ball handler. Plus, her teammates love playing with her.
All this and you want to tell me that her legacy hinges on whether or not her team, not her, defeats an undefeated 6 point favorite stacked South Carolina (for the second year in a row) team in one game? Even if she wins and drops 50 (not happening against South Carolina defense) and 15 assists (Ok, that can happen) haters will say she only has one ring and Stewart has four. Poppycock. Statistics, advanced statistics, and the all important eye test all tell me who is better by a clear margin. If she loses no matter how great she plays, some (not necessarily haters) will say she is not the GOAT because she doesn’t have a “chip” (as the delusional Jay Williams likes to say). Well everyone is entitled to their opinion no matter how wrong it is lol.

Iowa were definitely the underdogs going into the finals.

People need to remember that basketball is a TEAM sport not an individual sport. It takes a TEAM doing all of the right things to win a championship. No one individual has ever won a team championship in any sport at any level. The better team won the championship as SC probably has 5 future pros playing while Iowa has maybe 2 or 3 (and that's with Clark). Clark could have gone to UConn or LSU or SC to win championships, but she did the more respectful act of staying for 4 years (only 4 years) at one school that didn't have the pedigree of the blue bloods of women's college basketball. Yet, she elevated her team to not one but two title games during her time. She should be cheered for. She should be respected for her achievements. And, she should be great at the next level. We will see if her future teammates will allow her to be great.

Individual greatness is when your impact goes beyond your team; it's when your sport as a whole benefits from what you've accomplished. Also, basketball, as most sports are, is entertainment. Let me ask Basketball fans this...Were you stunned when Iowa on Clarks 18pt. Blitz came out on fire in the first quarter...I was shocked. But SC and Coach Staley knew what adjustments to make and say what you want about Revenge Tours or not...had their eye on the prize with determination and desire. Congrats to Dawn Staley and SC who still has the Horses to go the distance again to the Final 4!!

Isn't "legacy" a bit overheated for someone who's not even 25? People who can't name five women players watched the tournament or games that she was in, just like they watch games whenever a generational talent is involved. The ratings next year will be lower than this year and probably by a lot.

This is a team sport. Her teammates were way too small to fight for rebounds versus SC. Imagine if Iowa can even out on the rebounds, Iowa would have beaten SC. Too many offensive rebounds lead to ample second chances were the difference in the game.

I really enjoy Caitlin Clark just as much as anyone else. However, scoring records should be normalized just like everything else that is measurable when comparing it to something else. For instance, when we compare the value of money today with the value of money decades ago we say those dollars of yesteryears were equivalent to adjusted-for-inflation dollars of today. Otherwise, we have no real comparison.
All that said is to say that the only way to compare apples to apples and oranges to oranges is to find a base by which to do so. Points today, especially those points earned as three-pointers are inflated compared to points earned when the three-pointer shot did not exist. It would be like making a touchdown worth 13 points today and a field goal worth 6 points today and then comparing the highest scoring teams today with those of yesteryear when a touchdown was worth only 6 points and a field goal was worth only 3 points. No one should get credited 2 rebounds for every one rebound actually achieved. If that became the new standard, then it is readily discernable that prior rebounding stats and records won't hold up very long.
Thus, the ONLY way to compare scoring records from yesteryear to scoring records of today is to base scoring on field goals made and free throws made. To do otherwise is to falsely inflate and award some with new titles while fraudulently depriving those who were awarded earlier titles. If Caitlin made more field goals and free throws than any other woman, then she is the scoring champ. If not, then she is not the scoring champ.
And to compare an elite female athlete to an elite male athlete is simply pure madness. There is not, and has never been, a single elite collegiate or professional female basketball player who could displace, based on talent and physicality, any elite male collegiate or professional athlete on any division one team or professional team. That includes those males who sit the bench and rarely ever, if ever, get in a game - no woman can displace him. SO, LET'S STOP THAT MADNESS NOW!! IT MAKES EVERYONE LOOK STUPID AND TOTALLY DISINGENUOUS WHEN IT COMES OUT OF ONE'S MOUTH. In other words, if all things are based on merit alone, there is no Division 1 mens basketball team that 6'0" Caitlin Clark deserves to make. SO, STOP THAT, TOO!!! Especially since high school and collegiate female athletes are being WRONGFULLY displaced by competitively inept biological males who shy away from competing with other males (let's allow heavyweight pugilists to compete against featherweight pugilists so that those lesser talented heavyweights can win, too). This new bunch of weak-minded and weak-willed biological males bully out of the way biological female athletes, thus, lessening biological female success. A bunch of sorry, non-competitive biological male cowards grasping for low-hanging fruit within bological female arenas. That is a damn shame! And the so-called real men are also too cowardly to stand up for the biological female. So much for land of the free and home of the brave. EVERYBODY KNOWS THAT TITLE IX WAS ENACTED TO BENEFIT BIOLOGICAL FEMALES! Finally, God don't like it, and I don't either!!!

Hannah Stuelke carried Iowa vs UConn and without her, Iowa doesn't even get to the finals. She, a sophomore was 9/12 from the field while Caitlin was 7/18 in the same game. Uconn was 3/4 for free throws while Iowa was 10/14 for free throws. Way too many folks making comments literally know ZERO about basketball. The game was decided by 2 points. Iowa had 10 more free throw attempts. But sure, Iowa isn't getting the calls as opposed to their opponents. She isn't the Goat, period.

UCONN was playing far more aggressive defensively which almost always results in more fouls called. You should know that being an expert on the game.

@@RW-gx6ml Funny thing, when DUKE was winning all their championships, they were allowed to play way more aggressively on defense than their opponents. Yet it was their opponents that always have their best players in foul trouble. Again, only 4 free throws the entire game for UConn. Blank does blank, every expert knows that.
