John Bunyan - (1628-1688), Puritan author
John Bunyan had very little schooling. He followed his father in the tinker's trade, and he served in the parliamentary army from1644 to 1647. Bunyan married in 1649 and lived in Elstow until 1655, when his wife died. He then moved to Bedford, and married again in 1659. John Bunyan was received into the Baptist church in Bedford by immersion in 1653.
In 1655, Bunyan became a deacon and began preaching, with marked success from the start. In 1658 he was indicted for preaching without a license. The authorities were fairly tolerant of him for a while, and he did not suffer imprisonment until November of 1660, when he was taken to the county jail in Silver Street, Bedford, and there confined (with the exception of a few weeks in 1666) for 12 years until January 1672. Bunyan afterward became pastor of the Bedford church. In March of 1675 he was again imprisoned for preaching publicly without a license, this time being held in the Bedford town jail. In just six months this time he was freed, (no doubt the authorities were growing weary of providing Bunyan with free shelter and food) and he was not bothered again by the authorities.
John Bunyan wrote The Pilgrim's Progress in two parts, of which the first appeared at London in 1678,which he had begun during his imprisonment in 1676. The second part appeared in 1684. The earliest edition in which the two parts were combined in one volume came out in 1728. A third part falsely attributed to Bunyan appeared in 1693. The Pilgrim's Progress is the most successful allegory ever written, and like the Bible has been extensively translated into other languages.
John Bunyan wrote many other books, including one which discussed his inner life and reveals his preparation for his appointed work is Grace Abounding to the Chief of Sinners (1666). Bunyan became a popular preacher as well as a very voluminous author, though most of his works consist of expanded sermons. In theology he was a Puritan, but not a partisan. He was no scholar, except of the English Bible, but that he knew thoroughly. He also drew much influence from Martin Luther's Commentary on the Epistle to the Galatians.
Some time before his final release from prison Bunyan became involved in a controversy with two theologians of his day: Kiffin and Paul. In 1673 he published his Differences in Judgement about Water-Baptism no Bar to Communion, in which he took the ground that "the Church of Christ hath not warrant to keep out of the communion the Christian that is discovered to be a visible saint of the word, the Christian that walketh according to his own light with God." While he agreed as a Baptist that water baptism was God's ordinance, he refused to make "an idol of it," and he disagreed with those who would dis-fellowship from Christians who did not adhere to water baptism
Kiffin and Paul published a rejoinder in Serious Reflections (London, 1673), in which they set forth the argument in favor of the restriction of the Lord's Supper to baptized believers. The controversy resulted in the Particular (Calvinistic) Baptists leaving the question of communion with the unbaptized open. Bunyan's church permitted pedobaptists (those who baptize children, such as the Calvinistic Presbyterian Church) to fellowship and eventually, Bunyans church even became a pedobaptist church.
On a trip to London, John Bunyan caught a severe cold, and he died at the house of a friend at Snow Hill on August 31, 1688. His grave lies in the cemetery at Bunhill Fields in London.

The word of God NEVER expires. Genuine, spirit-filled preaching never expires. This is the word of God we need to listen to in these last days where false teachers have saturated the church. May the Lord have mercy on us.

John Bunyan was an amazing witness for Christ. I believe God used him during the prison years, to be a mighty witness. It was there he wrote A Pilgrims Progress, which is only second to the the Bible in circulation. He endured 12 years in a desperate prison for preaching the gospel!! We have a lot to learn through prayer, of how to persevere for Christ, and prayer will be a tool to help us here to endure.Thank you for teaching us about prayer, may we exercise our prayer muscles, so we do not faint in times of trouble, and can stand strong, and endure to the end.

    Overview:
    1. True prayer
    2. Praying in the spirit
    * Key weaknesses:
    - Not having holy spirit within us
    - Not praying in the spirit
    - Not being aware of our unconfessed sins
    - Being aware of sins but being unable to pray
    - Not knowing how to come to God his way
    - Being unable to call God, Father
    - Being unable to keep our heart in prayers
    - Praying without the help and strength of spirit
    3. Praying in my spirit and mind
    Application of what is learnt:
    Obstruction of prayer:
    - Cherish sin in our hearts
    - Praying only to be heard by others
    - Praying for wrong things
    - Not asking in the name of Christ
    Word of encouragement:
    Word of reproof:
My understanding from this video: You can neither rightly pray without understanding the scripture nor rightly understand the scripture without prayer!

      I'm an ex Hindu...
very true... scripture and prayer... prayer and scripture...
together... and everything else you say... even though you don't understand scripture... however, read the word... some verses or short chapter atleast ... pray to Lord... believing... and most times he will always answer prayers...
i only know basics, and I have only read less than 5% of Bible so far ... attitude must be correct with family first... pray with love... that's been my experience... also, lots of help on the net... i am hoping to read more of the word of God...

Hallelujah you've emancipated yourself from Satan's false religion. Well it's a Religion, it's just his religion.
If you just began you're still on the milk.
What you don't understand in scripture, meditate on. It even says this in the Bible. Ask God to show you. Ask the holy spirit to guide you.
I pray to God and he hears me. I don't have to pour out my heart or do anything religious. He knows my heart.
But I do ask for is forgiveness cuz every day I sin.
The Holy Spirit indwelling gives us clarity.

As an unlicensed preacher he did not write his sermons down neither his prayers so a Bishop ♝ could not check for errors. He was thrown into jail 15 years for this by religious hypocritical. He prayed with his eyes closed, preaching from memory, lived the godly life working with his hands an honest tinker trade. His written works read by most languages next to Bible for centuries

If you feel led, please pray for my husband who struggles with having a double mind, myself for physical illness and the pain that comes from unkindness and rejection from my husband, and our five children (4 have the same rare genetic disease I have that causes pain, fatigue and much more), and 1 20 yr old daughter who battles the same doublemindedness as my husband (bipolar) and anorexia. All these things manifested six years ago. The Lord gives me enough for each day, and I have had to learn obedience and walking in faith. Unfortunately, I am weary and struggle to obey one thing when I become afraid... I have trouble taming my tongue. I don't yell or swear or disrespect but I keep trying to get my husband to be obedient and faithful to God and somehow I make it worse. It's a bad habit to break it seems. Please, I believe with all my heart that the curse we are understand can only be broken by prayer and I am stepping out of my normal introversion and being bold and seeking faithful children of the Lord and begging for prayer. Yes, I'm begging. My beautiful family is suffering and I don't think anything but a miracle with save us. Thank you.

No sleeping for me as missthunderstormable feels. I found this message very encouraging and of great help. Thank you for taking the time to read and post. It was very timely for me at this particular juncture of my life.

Thank you very much for beginning this message by telling us where to get the full original text! While listening to an audio message is wonderful, (especially while driving or doing chores), sometimes it's better to read the message, which allows us to meditate on an idea and repeatedly review sentences. And here you've given us both forms!

You can't. They would run out of town. They preach what the people feel comfortable hearing. Isaiah 30: 10

God is All Powerful, and yet God has Bound Himself to man so that He will not move unless a man Prays In Faith. (Ezekiel 22:30). Many times God Desires to move, but there is no Sincere Praying Soul to take Him at His Word!.. The More Faithful Believing Intercession Offered Up To God's Throne, The Better The World Will Be.

This is why Spurgeon said the Puritan writings were better reading than any other Christian sermons.

What's sad? It's 2019. There is no church in the world in which you can hear a sermon like this today. Me? I am totally sick of hearing about politics in church. Sola. Scriptura.
