  • Despite the tumor slowly growing on his face for 15 years, Amadou never stopped providing medical care to others around him. As the sole healthcare professional, he became a pillar of hope for his village - and then, finally, it was time to have his own hope restored.

Mercy Ships uses hospital ships to deliver free, world-class healthcare services, capacity building, and sustainable development to those with little access in sub-Saharan Africa. Founded in 1978 by Don and Deyon Stephens, Mercy Ships has worked in more than 55 developing countries, providing services valued at more than $1.74 billion and treating more than 2.84 million direct beneficiaries. Our ships are crewed by volunteers from over 60 nations, with an average of over 1,200 volunteers each year. Professionals including surgeons, dentists, nurses, healthcare trainers, teachers, cooks, seamen, engineers, and agriculturalists donate their time and skills. With 16 national offices and our Africa Bureau, Mercy Ships seeks to transform individuals and serve nations.

Dr Amadou has served others, now it is wonderful to see him getting the help he needs. This means his community will see what is possible and they will be inspired.

What could be the cause of all these growths? Is it a vitamin deficiency that many people in this part of Africa have these growths?

what a world they live in, where a nurse becomes a doctor :D lucky for him, that the people dont know he isnt a real doctor.

Hi @gari stuka. Thing is, in a good number of rural areas in Africa, people who provide primary medical services are usually referred to as 'doctors' lol (even pharmacists). They don't really understand or know who a nurse is as doctors are the figure heads. As we develop, things become much clearer. Cheers
