The Canadian Red Ensign is missing...
The Red Ensign is on Ontario flag, not the Canadian flag. But in my opinion the Red Ensign should be on the Maple Leaf.
@@karenwesley332 What?
Agree
wth happened in these comments. Canada had a red ensign with symbols on the bottom right for a while and then changed it to a red ensign with different symbols in the bottom right than before. Then we got the beautiful flag which shows the maple leaf representing our freedom, and the two red lines representing our sacrifices in both world wars.
@@lukaswarnica9310 the point I was making is the flag does not match the flag of the date of the music recording. i.e. the recording is from 1914 when the national flag of the Dominion of Canada was the Canadian Red Ensign and the Maple Leaf was adopted by the Liberal Party in 1965...
For Queen and Country
As a Canadian myself, I appreciate being able to find this.
I didn't realize the verse mentioning Cape Race was included before 1949.
Sadly that beautiful country has disappeared. At least I got to live in part of it.
Nice accidental effect with the prop-plane flying over during the recording!
luls, I thought was part of the recording, and my brain went "hol up, when was this recorded..."
Ps. Sorry for the post necromancy
I remember hearing this song being performed while watching a historical documentary when I was still in grade school. I've only heard it a few times since then. What a song!
To all those you arguing about the flag, when the recording was made Canada didn't have it's own flag, the red ensign was adopted in 1922, 8 after the recording, so the way I see it he can use any Canadian flag he wants
The red ensign was redesigned in 1922, to include the major redesign of the coat of arms from 1921, but it was adopted in 1868. How, in 1917, could they raise the flag at Vimy Ridge, if it didn't exist until 5 years later?
LOVE the plane flying over at the end. You could never plan something like that!
I live in Gander and one of the main things we do is watch planes and once in a while you'll be sat up to the runway listening to deadly music when the plane engine roars overhead on landing and oh man brilliant
In Days of yore,
From Britain's shore
Wolfe the dauntless hero came
And planted firm Britannia's flag
On Canada's fair domain.
Here may it wave,
Our boast, our pride
And joined in love together,
The thistle, shamrock, rose entwined,
The Maple Leaf Forever.
[CHORUS]
The Maple Leaf
Our Emblem Dear,
The Maple Leaf Forever.
God save our Queen and heaven bless,
The Maple Leaf Forever.
At Queenston Heights and Lundy's Lane
Our brave fathers side by side
For freedom's home and loved ones dear,
Firmly stood and nobly died.
And so their rights which they maintained,
We swear to yeild them never.
Our watchword ever more shall be
The Maple Leaf Forever
[CHORUS]
Our fair Dominion now extends
From Cape Race to Nootka Sound
May peace forever be our lot
And plenty a store abound
And may those ties of love be ours
Which discord cannot sever
And flourish green for freedom's home
The Maple Leaf Forever
[CHORUS]
Its "God save our king" actually
On merry England's far famed land,
May kind heaven sweetly smile.
God bless old Scotland evermore,
and Ireland's Em'rald Isle!
And swell the song both loud and long,
Till rocks and forest quiver!
God save our King and Heaven bless,
The Maple Leaf forever!
A beautiful song for what once was a beautiful country. I've visited Canada quite a few times in my day and it's a shame that Canada really cares more about apologizing for its past than lionizing it. I hope you guys sort yourselves out alright.
Wishing my canuck friends good luck and good cheer from the USA

Awwwwww o how I love the worlds most cutest leaf Canada leaf 🍁😍😸🐱💛❤️🤍😺😽😻🥰😖☺️
It's interesting that the phrase "...from Cape Race..." is included since Cape Race was not part of Canada until 1949
Canada was scheming to get newfoundland since 1867 and finally got it 1949, this song proves it
@@flopypingas9766 Newfoundland has definitely been on the table since confederation, but its interesting how its included as if its already part of the country. I had thought that line was part of the update in 1997.
@@CanImperator I suppose that, at the time, Canada was just seen as British North America, regardless of whether or not they'd yet entered confederation. I have maps of Canada from the 1800s (copies, not originals lol), and they tend to include Newfoundland and other British North American colonies (such as Rupert's Land) even before they entered confederation.
@@mohammedgharbiyah6566 That could be it. The original lyrics always were more "British imperial" rather than Canadian, so they must have just included all the British colonies in NA.
wow in ww1
L'Impérialiste Canadien Well, it said that the recording was in January so about 6 month before the war actually started.
Wow that’s amazing you have that recording
Beautiful

Love from British Columbia
This is like heroin to me. Love it.
Not a perfect country, as has been recognized recently, though if anyone has a brain they knew this reckoning was coming. But I’m still a proud Canadian! Imperfect history, helped save the modern world twice over, have some sad history to atone for, but by God we will get better. That’s our job.
Canned music is very interesting
Awesome piece of history

Hello bonjour! Great job! I am starting a couple of podcasts about Canadian independent artists and Canadian writers, and I was wondering if you would mind if I used the audio from this as our theme song? I will be happy to link back to this video and your channel. Thanks merci in advance!
Bonjour! Oui! I am flattered. You can use this as long as you mention that I am the source: Keith Wright and/or keithwright.ca and/or back to this video/channel. I would love to see what you do! My main email is keith@keithwright.ca from Toronto, ON.
Please do.

Have to ask about two things my ear picked up on:
(1) It sounds like a slightly different melody in the second line of the chorus, immediately following "our emblem dear," than is usually heard in more modern recordings. In the key of B used in this recording, I expect to hear (F#)the (G#)ma-(G#)ple (E)leaf (D#)for-(D#)ev-(C#)er, but I think I am actually hearing (F#)the (A#)ma-(B)ple (E)leaf ... Do you have any idea if the melody was different 100+ years ago?
(2) What happened at the end? Were you powering the player off of a battery that began dying about 20 seconds too soon?

use the proper flag not that joke of a flag.
You’re a clown
You mean the Red Ensign
You're the only joke here. You're a clown.
@@SantiagoGeffen Nah. They’re right, the ensign is the flag they’re referring to, and they couldn’t be more right by calling it the “proper flag”.
Agreed. And I like your channel banner, Battle of Queenston Heights!
