We would never know the original story. Women throughout history were deemed incapable of ruling. The Chinese painted wu zetian as a cruel woman, yet during her reign, China flourished. There were no wars, instead there was development in agriculture, education and less famine.
Anne Boleyn was murdered due to heresy, incest and adultery, none of it was proven. The investigation was done from the Palace itself. So it's clear how bias the case conclusion would've been. She was ambitious and smart. Her ideologies were considered modern and unacceptable because she was a Protestant and she wanted to enhance the minds of people without blindly following a reigion.
Heebin would've been an ambitious woman, and she would've done some bad things to get there which are wrong. But then men throughout history have done worse.

Thank you. I was waiting for a comment like this!
When historians talk about “evil women” I’m always suspicious
Not saying Heebin was right for her actions, its just that we’ll never know if the story as we know it is as truthfull as we think
Women have been painted as evil, witches, etc through history. Especially in societies as misogynists as these, in different parts of the world and through years and years
Also, it irks me how many people in the comments are quick to take the king’s side.
We need to consider that we only know a very little portion of the story, a very manipulated version of it, told by the people in power too

But there is a reason why Anne Boleyn was seen as evil. I agree it was mostly Henry’s fault. But i think many find her evil due to the first wife. They see Anna Boleyn as a reason for the first wife’s suffering. This went to the point that it was said that Jane Seymour also did similar thing as her to get Henry’s attention. But everyone liked her because they disliked Anne for what happened to Catherine and changing the religion. A lot of people really liked Catherine and were sympathetic towards to her and disliked Anne. I agree Anne does not seem evil. But I can see why people disliked her. I actually feel bad for her

I have watch Jang Ok Jung played by Kim Tae Hee.. I felt inlove with the character of Jang Hee Bin because of that so I was wondering why she had this title Evil Queen when in fact I can see her as a victim of her unfortunate circumstances. Despite of this, Kim Tae Hee gave justice to her role.. and contrary to the evil title given to her I still like her and so interested to see her tomb if ever I visit Korea.

I had watched Dong Yi first but I still liked her(Jang Hee bin) way more than Suk Bin(dong yi) who was equally sceming and had her greeds as much as Jang Hee Bin yet pretended to be all innocent. I have watched the story in the point of view of Jang Hee-Bin from the kdrama 'Jang Ok-Jang, living in love'. A great drama it was. I have heard that in the drama 'Dong Yi', Hee-bin was potrayed as an evil woman. And I do see she had turned evil later on in the story. From the drama that I watched, she was a nice woman like all. And she loved the King very dearly. But it was her love for him that turned her this way. -In one of scenes, Hee-bin, when she was the Queen, heard that the King slept with a court maid. She beat that girl, who was Dong Yi, with a stick on her calves. The King entered the scene right on that time, and I could see how angry he was. - There was another scene where she poisioned herself and framed his mother. The King was quite aware of her actions.
The King and Hee-bin did love each other. But sometimes, some people lose interest, while some become toxic.
    This is the reality, people.

As a king's wife.. there is no room for jealousy. It is for a king's obligation and privilege to have more concubine to bear an heir to avoid failure. But heebin was so jealous and started to become toxic when she was influenced by the support of her faction. Once you taste the sweetness of having such a huge power you will ask for more.. and thats true for heebin.. its her fault why king lost interest on her and find sukbin choi as her new love.. the king was in love with heebin when she was just simple, kind lady.. maybe thats what king sukjongs like for a woman..

Dongyi and Yanxi telling the stories of the maid/slave loyal to queen/empress (wife 1) and who eventually Succeeds in avenging there mistress against the evil queen #2 and becomes the most powerful woman in court despite never becoming queen/empress herself. Thats the history is written, but for me , life taught me that the truth is different for different people, the that there is more than the one sides to truth. But the one which favors the powerful and rich on is the one written down in History. For me, this is a story about one unfortunate women whose people left her side in times of need due to politics; of a women bullied by her own jealous MIL who could not see her own son loving another women more than herself; of a women removed from her own house like she was not wanted there even after she completed her duty as a wife (read produced a son); of a women even after all the trauma was not supposed to show emotions in the fear of it being aggressive to her bullying MIL; of a women whose husband left her after she aged a little and trauma weighed her down; of a women who was labelled as a witch and blamed for someones death (shouldnt those who actually believe in witchcraft be at fault???). Its sad that metal health of the characters written down in history is often single dimentional, even to this day in 2022. Heres my attemt, if not all, maybe some of it has a side of truth. Again, I dont know the real story, not claiming this to be the absolute truth, just, most people r not really evil.

I watched this first as Jang ok Jung so I couldn't bring myself to watch Dongyi especially if she was going to be ridiculed.
I love her in that drama even when I could see that her insecurity was getting the best of her, I could understand.
She loved a man who was a king as well and was awfully naive about the fact that she would have to share him no matter how it may have pained her. And it didn't help that his mother didn't like her, to me that was a purely selfish decision on his mother's path, it likely wasn't because heebin was a wicked girl, no she was affiliated with the south and the queen dowager with the west. Plus the king loved hee bin, to the queen dowager ,heebin was a threat to her power because a man in love is susceptible to his lovers views especially if they don't necessarily cause any harm.
As for the history book, history tends to paint women who act outside the norms of society as evil.
Heebin was a middle class woman who dated to seek the king's affection and those who watch Korean historical know how deep the class divide runs. But she didn't just dare to seek his affections she caught it and then did what the queen could not bore a son, that must have infuriated the western faction and if reality politics is as brutal as what is portrayed in fiction they didn't take it lying down, the witch claim is evidence of that. Heebin tried to protect herself and her love in a society that was rigged against her, even the southern faction that the queen dowager hated her for would abandon her the moment she was not useful, she was a middle class nobody to everyone but the king, I would want to protect that too but in the end it didn't quite work out for her and that is sad.

its funny that historians painted her to be evil one and ignored the queen dowager's own actions! We all know that everyone that lives in the palace is involved in politics somehow, from the servants to the maids to the eunuchs to the concubines to ministers! Everyone was playing the political games! And from what I have seen in Korean society from Korean dramas even back then the powerful rule over the weak, I can imagine what heebin must have gone through in that palace, being humiliated and targeted constantly by the queen dowager, nobody turns evil out of the blue! She may have been ambitious, yes, BUT Queen Dowager's constant harassment and bullying of Heebin must have contributed to her turning into an evil person! Everyone has a breaking point, and Heebin definitely had hers! You can't continue to bully someone and expect them to do nothing against you later! The queen dowager definitely had it out for Heebin! The mother of the king was constantly using her power to force her son to do her bidding and work to help her political party, Heebin being from the opposing Political party was another excuse used by the queen dowager to justify her continuing harassment of heebin! And to keep heebin from the king, constantly choosing women to marry him off to like he was a piece of toy that she could pass around! And always women from her own faction, the queen dowager was pimping the king out for political favors! Yet, Heebin was the evil one! It's no wonder Heebin killed her!!

Funny I’m watching dong yi just now. I guess the king’s mother was right about her. Listen to your parents folks.
Edit: I will like to add some points you missed.
    - sukbin was a huge reason the queen came back cause she convince the king and even dared to have memorial (how sukbin meet the king) for the deposed queen when hee bin was queen, the king upon seeing this was impressed by sukbin openly admitting doing this as most was afraid of hee bin. She openly supported the queen.
    - the king had a dream about the queen after she died that she was drenched in blood pointing to the direction of heebin‘s bedroom. When the king woke up he did an investigation, some of hee bins maids confess that she had a portrait of the late queen having the maids shoot a dagger at her portrait 3 times a day and always had a shaman pray for the queens death.
    - when heebin was sentence to death she greatly injured her son the crown prince and because of this injury the crown prince was infertile paving way for sukbin’s son who became one of the greatest kings of josen history. Some say she was so evil it affected her son ability have kids.
    - queen inhyeon was deposed cause she refused to adopt heebin’s son which the king suggested.

If she had a more leveled head and even temper she would have been an insanely powerful woman.

So the story of Dong Yi korean historical drama is accurate?

    • @rqinytxars5654
      @rqinytxars5654 Před rokem

in some sense i guess in the beginning they show her as an innocent person who had morals and actually care for people but over time due to the men in the show showing her a different viewpoint about power she starts to change so tht show just didn’t start off with her just being evil and stuff it shows the stages of her life but most of the parts of the show are just for drama

i don’t think any historical drama is that accurate since most of the records back then were burned when the royal palace was set on fire
