The Greek Flag is blue and white as the sky, sea and waves of the sea…resembles the mass of water waves surrounding it when it proudly flies! According to tradition, the nine stripes represent the nine syllables of the phrase "Freedom or Death" (E-le-fthe-ri-a i Tha-na-tos in Greek), the motto of the Greek Revolution. The cross symbolises our Orthodoxy! A flag of spirit, ethos and pride!

I’m a history lover and have some knowledge of Greece. For some reason or another, I haven’t had a desire to go to Greece. This is probably good because you get a lot of tourists. However, this video changed my mind. Now, I want to visit Greece! Hopefully, I can travel there one day. What a beautiful country that has a fascinating history.

Thing is it didn't use to be little. It was significantly larger in a time when all other civilizations were significantly smaller. Then it ceased to exist as a country for centuries, before miraculously coming back in the modern day. Greece could have very easily ended up like the Sumerians, Egyptians or Romans. A sidenote in the history books.
Yes, but Greek civilization itself was also inspired by the Phoenician and Mesopotamians. For instance, the original Greek writing system in which both Latin and Cyrillic have derived from was adopted from the ancient Phoenicians.

Amazing! 😃 The Phoenicians giving the Alphabet to the Greeks is comparable to someone teaching you how to start a fire & you end up developing a Space Rocket 👍 NOTE: Greeks also had a writing System (that they adopted from the Minoans) called Mycenaean Linear B. The oldest found (so far) writing in that system (which is 100% Greek) is currently dated at 1,500 BC. That number will probably go back a little further. This is written Greek that is hundreds of years older than anything Phoenician, and even older than any Proto-Sinaitic. Would you mind sharing with us what the oldest Persian inscription is that can be understood using your language? I’m curious to know. I hope this info has helped you! You are a true Philhellene, my friend. The Greeks always stride to present to people of other ethnicities the various contributions of the Hellenic Civilisation to humanity, even when they are incapable of eloquently or accurately describing this multifaceted offering. It is, indeed, indescribable the feeling of being able to understand a text that an ancestor of yours carved on a piece of marble 2500 years ago, as if it was written by you yourself sometime in the near past. It is, indeed, impossible to put into words a History so wide that it covers a space from Albion to Bactria and a time from Minos to Papanikolaou. To add to these, the Hellenic Civilisation was probably the first to include people from all backgrounds on the criterion that they speak the Greek language, a medium of communication abounding with the words and ways of the Hellenes. These are truths that we, Modern Greeks, tend to forget, or obscure even, focusing on our misfortunes. This is why the Philhellenes have much to offer to us, Hellenes. Personalities like Marguerite Yourcenar, Peter Mackridge, Mario Vitti, Jacqueline de Romilly are highly respected by the Greek people, for they remind us and the world that the Hellenic Civilisation moved humanity a step further, by revealing to us this step's cultural, sociopolitical and scientific footprint. Thank you so much for these two amazing videos on Greece, and as you requested your viewers to leave comments, I will oblige. I was born in Athens in 1950 and my family emigrated to South Africa in 1963 where I have lived ever since. Obviously, Greece has been a huge influence in my life and the older I get the more I miss the country, the mountains, the sea, the food, the language and the music. Which brings me to a point I'd like to raise regarding important Greek musicians and artists, and that is that I expected the name Maria Callas to be mentioned along with Nana Mouskouri and Vangelis. Also, there is a "new" Greek tenor that is taking the world by storm and that is Mario Frangoulis, and I would encourage all people who read this to look him up, read about his accomplishments, and listen to his amazing voice.

@@alperenbaser7952 The WORD is etymologically Turkish…YES. But I’m afraid that the Ancient Greeks had it as well & called it Oxygala (ὀξύγαλα, literally meaning: sour milk. Also known today as xynogala (ξινόγαλα and ξυνόγαλα). It was a dairy product consumed in the cuisines of ancient Greece and Rome. Oxygala was a form of yogurt and was usually eaten with honey. It was also known among the ancient Persians & the Mesopotamians. So Yogurt, the concept, predates all of us! In closing, the Yogurt itself depends on the type of cultures used to make it, along with the way of preparing it. The Greek one usually tends to be very strained & very creamy. This method is also shared since Antiquity as well by many Ancient Peoples..👍

Yes, this little country is blessed. The Greek spirit goes through thick and thin. There is a Greek saying that goes like this: Greece will never die! I honestly hope that this jewel in the East-Mediterranean sea will be just there for us to come and witness this beautiful country and the famous Greek hospitality.

Vangelis' full name is "Evangelos Odysseas", literally meaning "Odysseas who brings good news". Vangelis composed my all time favorite score, unsurpassed to this day, the score for Blade Runner. Thank you for this video!
@@Geodiode And I guess he lived according to his name too, which, if you ponder on it, it's a very ancient Greek thing. Take for example Leonidas the King of Sparta: his name literally means son or descendant of a lion (leon in Greek), and he proved himself equal not just to the occasion, but to also his name (a lion indeed muchmore considering that at Thermopylae he was at the age of 60). Aristotle (Aristotelis in Greek) literally means the one who reaches/finishes his goals perfectly, which he absolutely did the best possible way. Alexander (Alexandros) literally means to repulse men (enemies) or to protect men, who with his abilities he was a shield to his men doing both repulse and protect, but also in a way considering the Hellenistic period he caused, he became somehow the guardian of the cultural progress for man generally.

Great video I think I missed part 1 but will definitely check it out Greece is top on my list of countries to visit. I didn't know that song was from ancient Greece I am also a big fan of the civilization game. I even have a youtube channel covering the ins and outs of it but I have become busy with work and there has been less content coming out for me to cover for the game.

The modern Greek flag in essence is much much older as they existed some very similar once during the revolution. When the Greek revolution started, it happen in many pockets of Greece because of this every place that revolt had its own flag with many common symbols with most important the cross. Also many fighters and chiefs had also there own flag. The personal flag that was flying by kanaris( Κωσταντίνος Καναρης) in 1821 was very similar with the modern one but with five strips and the one that was flying by Miaulis ( Ανδρέας Μιαουλης) was with 8 (or 9) strip but the colors reverse ( blue cross with first white stripe) but both of them are based of the flag of Kallergi ( Καλλεργη) brothers of Crete which it was used much earlier in there fight against Venice and it was base of there family crest which was 9 parallel blue and white stripes with a the first blue and a cross in the corner which is pretty much the modern Greek flag but with the motto Εν τούτο νικα ( which is what Constantine the great had on his flag) But, as many of these Greek revolution flags are very obscured and many used these flags aren't well known to many.
North Macedonia is not the area where Alexander the Great originated from. North Macedonia is too far north and the people are Slavic, not Greek. That was why Greece protested. These other people were trying to assume Greece’s heritage.
In any case, the video doesnt claim that "North Macedonia's" citizens are decendants of the ancient Macedonia. It just mentions the tendency about the name. In a previous video of this channel, he did included Macedonia as a part of Greek history. He doeesnt deny that. But yes, its important to note that they dont only want the name of Macedonia, but they also want to claim its heritage and this is at least illogical...

I would just like to note that the number of the stripes of the greek (Hellenic) flag does have a meaning: each one represents a syllable of the known expression during the 1821 war of independence: "Ε-λευ-θε-ρί-α-ή-θά-να-τος", that is, freedom or death. You have done a very nice work, attempting to fit the history in two videos!

Of course, not everything can be said in such short introductory videos and prioritization is inevitably subjective. For those who read our comments, however, I would mention Dimitri Mitropoulos, one of the most prominent conductors of the 20th century. I would also draw attention to the Byzantine and Rebetiko musical styles, both listed as UNESCO World Heritage; and to the highly influential Byzantine art in general (painting and architecture). A modern tradition, the unique 'artistic popular' music married to poetry was pioneered by poets such as the Nobel laureates Odysseus Elytis and Giorgos Seferis, and composers such as Mikis Theodorakis and Manos Hadjidakis, to mention only the most widely known. Specimens of modern Greek culture and vanguard productions in any artistic domain are presented in numerous festivals occurring practically everywhere in Greece during the summer and in big cities throughout the year.

After the first episode ("8 ages of Greek stuff"), I can't help but read "Geodiode" as "Γεοδιόδης" (which is not a real word, as far as I know), but I'm guessing it's meant to be read as; "Jee-oh Dye-ode"; like one of those rocks with all the sparkly crystals inside, but with electrical components hooked up to it?
You have been thinking! And since you made the effort, I'll grace you with a bit of backstory to the name. I needed something completely unique on the internet, firstly. And I wanted something that began with "geo" because it would be about geography and the earth (greek "geo-"). I settled on "diode" as the suffix, because it was going to be electronically created and disseminated, and also because the name sounded, as you spotted correctly, like "geode". It's not a perfect name, but once I'd committed to the first video, it had to stick. Anyway, I hope you found that useful! :)

A very minor correction: the output of tourism in the Greek GDP is less than 10% in nominal, and less than 6% in purchasing parity terms. The 9 stripes on the flag are the 9 syllables of the phrase "Freedom or Death" in Greek (Ελευθερία ή Θάνατος).
5:15 also, the Ionian islands have a much higher development, population density and economic significance than their size would suggest, probably as a result of avoiding the wars and slaughters of the rest of Greece during Ottoman times
Very nice and well researched video. About the modern flag of Greece. As a Greek/Hellin (or Éllin) the stripes we were taught at school that blue is for the see and white for the snow of the mountaintops. And their number is for the syllables of the frace eleftheria í thanatos (freedom or death) that comes from the greek revolution
I found both parts most informative and thorough! I would like to thank all the people who contributed for this piece of work! Just a small contribution regarding the Greek flag. The cross on the upper left corner, does indeed refers to the Greek Christian Orthodoxy, which as quite correctly mentioned, prevails in Greece. Regarding the stripes though, although it is noted that they may refer to the Greek revolution moto, "Elefteria i Thanatos", i.e. "Freedom or Death", another alternative passed on to me when I was a child is that they symbolise the Greek seas and sky. In fact I was told that each blue stripe symbolise a Greek sea (Pelagos), for example, Aigaio Pelagos, Ionion Pelagos, Ikarion Pelagos, Kritiko Pelagos, Thrasian Pelagos. Some other commentator might correct me if this is entirely wrong. However, I have never heard that the Greek flag has anything to do with the flag of the United States. By the way, there used to be two Greek flags! One was the "land flag", which was a white cross with four blue corners (same as the national coat of arms, but different proportions) and the other was the "sea flag", which is the one that is now formally the Greek flag.

Yogurt is actually a Bulgarian invention but is also well know in Greece. The bacteria that yogurt is made of is called "Bacillus bulgaricus" for a reason. But I guess food traditions are sometimes overlapping in countries that share common borders.

Great videos! Thank you! FYI, the stripes in the flag do have meaning though. There are 9 which is same as amount of syllables in the National “phrase” which is ελευθερία η θάνατος, which means freedom or death. And the colors are the blue seas and the white froth on the waves.
With regards to the flag, the bars represent the first lines of the national anthem and the layout is based on an ensign used by Henry VIII of England. The flag was created in Samos and the blue represents the sky and sea whilst the white is the of the surf. Otherwise, nice docu.

I’m a history lover and have some knowledge of Greece. For some reason or another, I haven’t had a desire to go to Greece. This is probably good because you get a lot of tourists. However, this video changed my mind. Now, I want to visit Greece! Hopefully, I can travel there one day. What a beautiful country that has a fascinating history.
I regard greek culture as the cradle of our western european culture and civilisation - wonderful :)

We are a little country because Greece lost it's capital Constantinople and the other half of Greece to Turkey,
Thing is it didn't use to be little. It was significantly larger in a time when all other civilizations were significantly smaller. Then it ceased to exist as a country for centuries, before miraculously coming back in the modern day. Greece could have very easily ended up like the Sumerians, Egyptians or Romans. A sidenote in the history books.
Yes, but Greek civilization itself was also inspired by the Phoenician and Mesopotamians. For instance, the original Greek writing system in which both Latin and Cyrillic have derived from was adopted from the ancient Phoenicians.

NOTE: Greeks also had a writing System (that they adopted from the Minoans) called Mycenaean Linear B. The oldest found (so far) writing in that system (which is 100% Greek) is currently dated at 1,500 BC. That number will probably go back a little further. This is written Greek that is hundreds of years older than anything Phoenician, and even older than any Proto-Sinaitic.

The Greeks always stride to present to people of other ethnicities the various contributions of the Hellenic Civilisation to humanity, even when they are incapable of eloquently or accurately describing this multifaceted offering.
It is, indeed, indescribable the feeling of being able to understand a text that an ancestor of yours carved on a piece of marble 2500 years ago, as if it was written by you yourself sometime in the near past.
It is, indeed, impossible to put into words a History so wide that it covers a space from Albion to Bactria and a time from Minos to Papanikolaou.
To add to these, the Hellenic Civilisation was probably the first to include people from all backgrounds on the criterion that they speak the Greek language, a medium of communication abounding with the words and ways of the Hellenes.
These are truths that we, Modern Greeks, tend to forget, or obscure even, focusing on our misfortunes. This is why the Philhellenes have much to offer to us, Hellenes.
Personalities like Marguerite Yourcenar, Peter Mackridge, Mario Vitti, Jacqueline de Romilly are highly respected by the Greek people, for they remind us and the world that the Hellenic Civilisation moved humanity a step further, by revealing to us this step's cultural, sociopolitical and scientific footprint.
Your nuanced documentaries are a contribution of this sort, and I as a Greek appreciate them deeply,

I was born in Athens in 1950 and my family emigrated to South Africa in 1963 where I have lived ever since. Obviously, Greece has been a huge influence in my life and the older I get the more I miss the country, the mountains, the sea, the food, the language and the music. Which brings me to a point I'd like to raise regarding important Greek musicians and artists, and that is that I expected the name Maria Callas to be mentioned along with Nana Mouskouri and Vangelis. Also, there is a "new" Greek tenor that is taking the world by storm and that is Mario Frangoulis, and I would encourage all people who read this to look him up, read about his accomplishments, and listen to his amazing voice.

The WORD is etymologically Turkish…YES. But I’m afraid that the Ancient Greeks had it as well & called it Oxygala (ὀξύγαλα, literally meaning: sour milk. Also known today as xynogala (ξινόγαλα and ξυνόγαλα). It was a dairy product consumed in the cuisines of ancient Greece and Rome. Oxygala was a form of yogurt and was usually eaten with honey. It was also known among the ancient Persians & the Mesopotamians.
So Yogurt, the concept, predates all of us!
In closing, the Yogurt itself depends on the type of cultures used to make it, along with the way of preparing it. The Greek one usually tends to be very strained & very creamy. This method is also shared since Antiquity as well by many Ancient Peoples..👍

Take for example Leonidas the King of Sparta: his name literally means son or descendant of a lion (leon in Greek), and he proved himself equal not just to the occasion, but to also his name (a lion indeed muchmore considering that at Thermopylae he was at the age of 60). Aristotle (Aristotelis in Greek) literally means the one who reaches/finishes his goals perfectly, which he absolutely did the best possible way. Alexander (Alexandros) literally means to repulse men (enemies) or to protect men, who with his abilities he was a shield to his men doing both repulse and protect, but also in a way considering the Hellenistic period he caused, he became somehow the guardian of the cultural progress for man generally.

The modern Greek flag in essence is much much older as they existed some very similar once during the revolution.
When the Greek revolution started, it happen in many pockets of Greece because of this every place that revolt had its own flag with many common symbols with most important the cross.
Also many fighters and chiefs had also there own flag.
The personal flag that was flying by kanaris( Κωσταντίνος Καναρης) in 1821 was very similar with the modern one but with five strips and the one that was flying by Miaulis ( Ανδρέας Μιαουλης) was with 8 (or 9) strip but the colors reverse ( blue cross with first white stripe) but both of them are based of the flag of Kallergi ( Καλλεργη) brothers of Crete which it was used much earlier in there fight against Venice and it was base of there family crest which was 9 parallel blue and white stripes with a the first blue and a cross in the corner which is pretty much the modern Greek flag but with the motto Εν τούτο νικα ( which is what Constantine the great had on his flag)
But, as many of these Greek revolution flags are very obscured and many used these flags aren't well known to many.

North Macedonia is not the area where Alexander the Great originated from. North Macedonia is too far north and the people are Slavic, not Greek. That was why Greece protested. These other people were trying to assume Greece’s heritage.
In any case, the video doesnt claim that "North Macedonia's" citizens are decendants of the ancient Macedonia. It just mentions the tendency about the name. In a previous video of this channel, he did included Macedonia as a part of Greek history. He doeesnt deny that.
But yes, its important to note that they dont only want the name of Macedonia, but they also want to claim its heritage and this is at least illogical...

I would just like to note that the number of the stripes of the greek (Hellenic) flag does have a meaning: each one represents a syllable of the known expression during the 1821 war of independence: "Ε-λευ-θε-ρί-α-ή-θά-να-τος", that is, freedom or death. You have done a very nice work, attempting to fit the history in two videos!

Of course, not everything can be said in such short introductory videos and prioritization is inevitably subjective. For those who read our comments, however, I would mention Dimitri Mitropoulos, one of the most prominent conductors of the 20th century. I would also draw attention to the Byzantine and Rebetiko musical styles, both listed as UNESCO World Heritage; and to the highly influential Byzantine art in general (painting and architecture). A modern tradition, the unique 'artistic popular' music married to poetry was pioneered by poets such as the Nobel laureates Odysseus Elytis and Giorgos Seferis, and composers such as Mikis Theodorakis and Manos Hadjidakis, to mention only the most widely known. Specimens of modern Greek culture and vanguard productions in any artistic domain are presented in numerous festivals occurring practically everywhere in Greece during the summer and in big cities throughout the year.

After the first episode ("8 ages of Greek stuff"), I can't help but read "Geodiode" as "Γεοδιόδης" (which is not a real word, as far as I know), but I'm guessing it's meant to be read as; "Jee-oh Dye-ode"; like one of those rocks with all the sparkly crystals inside, but with electrical components hooked up to it?
You have been thinking! And since you made the effort, I'll grace you with a bit of backstory to the name. I needed something completely unique on the internet, firstly. And I wanted something that began with "geo" because it would be about geography and the earth (greek "geo-"). I settled on "diode" as the suffix, because it was going to be electronically created and disseminated, and also because the name sounded, as you spotted correctly, like "geode". It's not a perfect name, but once I'd committed to the first video, it had to stick. Anyway, I hope you found that useful! :)
Came here from Part 1, thank you for showcasing the country as it is! A very minor correction: the output of tourism in the Greek GDP is less than 10% in nominal, and less than 6% in purchasing parity terms.
The 9 stripes on the flag are the 9 syllables of the phrase "Freedom or Death" in Greek (Ελευθερία ή Θάνατος).

Very nice and well researched video. About the modern flag of Greece. As a Greek/Hellin (or Éllin) the stripes we were taught at school that blue is for the see and white for the snow of the mountaintops. And their number is for the syllables of the frace eleftheria í thanatos (freedom or death) that comes from the greek revolution

I found both parts most informative and thorough! I would like to thank all the people who contributed for this piece of work! Just a small contribution regarding the Greek flag. The cross on the upper left corner, does indeed refers to the Greek Christian Orthodoxy, which as quite correctly mentioned, prevails in Greece. Regarding the stripes though, although it is noted that they may refer to the Greek revolution moto, "Elefteria i Thanatos", i.e. "Freedom or Death", another alternative passed on to me when I was a child is that they symbolise the Greek seas and sky. In fact I was told that each blue stripe symbolise a Greek sea (Pelagos), for example, Aigaio Pelagos, Ionion Pelagos, Ikarion Pelagos, Kritiko Pelagos, Thrasian Pelagos. Some other commentator might correct me if this is entirely wrong. However, I have never heard that the Greek flag has anything to do with the flag of the United States. By the way, there used to be two Greek flags! One was the "land flag", which was a white cross with four blue corners (same as the national coat of arms, but different proportions) and the other was the "sea flag", which is the one that is now formally the Greek flag.
Thanks so much! In doing my research I found it frustrating that there was no confirmation of the meanings that you described *at the time the flag was created*. It is possible that the meanings were added later.

I didn't know either until I did the research for this video! And it was probably my most favourite variation in all of Civ 6.
Yogurt is actually a Bulgarian invention but is also well know in Greece. The bacteria that yogurt is made of is called "Bacillus bulgaricus" for a reason. But I guess food traditions are sometimes overlapping in countries that share common borders.

Another popular musician who follows more traditional greek music would be Mikis Theodorakis. Many would know him from making the Greek 'Zorbas'.
But Mikis' genre isn't traditional Greek music. It's entechno.

Great videos! Thank you! FYI, the stripes in the flag do have meaning though. There are 9 which is same as amount of syllables in the National “phrase” which is ελευθερία η θάνατος, which means freedom or death. And the colors are the blue seas and the white froth on the waves.

With regards to the flag, the bars represent the first lines of the national anthem and the layout is based on an ensign used by Henry VIII of England. The flag was created in Samos and the blue represents the sky and sea whilst the white is the of the surf. Otherwise, nice docu.
