An incredible display of the power of the human brain you can try at home is to catch an object (ideally, soft, especially if you haven’t practiced) with your eyes closed. Believe it or not, watching the first 50% or so of an object’s trajectory allows your brain to very accurately predict where it will be . This means you can close your eyes, reach out and grab the object out of the air without even seeing it (with surprisingly high success rates). So not only does your brain predict where the object is, but also knows exactly which muscles to move and how far in order to make the catch. I really encourage you try this at home and really get a sense for the amazing capabilities of the brain. There are a couple of ways to explain this. For physicists, you can say it’s like the ballistic motion equations are hard-wired into your brain. For biologists, you can say that we have an instinctive reflex for determining if we are in danger from being hit by a projectile.
