  • Neck Deep are about to release their self-titled record in 2024. Let's chat about my unfairly high expectations for this band and this album. Will it be as good as life's not out to get you? Will Neck Deep become the biggest pop-punk band of all time?

    How are we feeling about the new record??

      Listen in progress! Just looking at the artwork, it jibes with what you say here, speech bubbles with "Generic Pop Punk", "F**k Neck Deep" etc. But it won't disappoint I'm sure.

    I can relate to a lot of what you're saying in this video, and I went into this album with moderate expectations. I'm thrilled to report that it's very good, and a top 3 Neck Deep album, in my opinion.
    3. Self titled - it's a ton of fun, and while the singles make up most of the songs I'll be consistently going back to, there are a couple gems that hadn't been released already
    2. The Peace and the Panic - an album that would get so much more love and credit for being as great as it is if it wasn't following the album that it does
    1. Life's Not Out To Get You - not only is this the standard for Neck Deep, this album sets my standard for pop punk as a genre. The reason I don't think Neck Deep will ever top this album is because I don't think any pop punk band ever will. It's the closest thing to a perfect pop punk album I've ever heard. I've even got a tattoo of June, the funky-looking dude on the cover.
    I absolutely agree that it's silly to hold the band to the standard and sound they had nearly a decade ago. We can still enjoy new music from our favourite artists even if the new stuff doesn't quite live up to whatever project we deem the best in a catalogue. I'm perfectly happy with the new album as it's cleared my expectations, and is a solid improvement on All Distortions Are Intentional, which is all I really wanted.

      You know I think we might have identical album rankings. I still need to listen to the album a few times but I agree with the points you made, especially what you said about LNOTGY

    I did the same with blink. For me, their run from Dude Ranch through Untitled was perfect. I use to think that me not enjoying Neighborhoods or the Skiba era somehow tainted those previous records. But it's much easier to just be happy that they're still together and making music and I'm thankful I connected so much with those previous 4 albums in the first place. I don't need to love everything they release. I can still enjoy songs here and there; it doesn't need to be perfect.

    kinda crazy that neck deep, glass beach and green day release an album on the same day. completely agree with your opinion on it right, like there are albums that were released by bands that will always be held high, like lifes not out to get you, or pwcepatlpitw by ajj, or the albatross or even please be nice by camping in alaska, but when a group puts out a new album after they've already peaked in your eyes it's like you're already setting the gold standard for the new content to live up to when they're never going to release the same album again.

      Good point. It must feel like a blessing and a curse for these bands to release an un-toppable album

    I appreciate the new record for what it is. They are all fun songs and I love that they seemed to go back to a sound that most fans have been asking for. The departure of key members of the band have really impacted the songwriting and maybe direction(?) of most of their new music and that has been so strikingly evident as the records progressed so there's no point to prattle on what could have been. I'm still not sure why Ben decided to forgo singing in a lower register for his more high-register twang that I do miss from Wishful Thinking and LNOTGY but if he's happier this way and they're putting out this record then that means this is what feels right for the band. I'll always look back at LNOTGY and WT (which was my gateway record from them) with rose-colored lenses and how much impact they had on my life during that time. That will always be Neck Deep to me. But this album is also Neck Deep. I guess it's just a matter of reconciling these two versions of them I have in my head. Appreciating the old without discounting the new, appreciating the new without it taking away from how much I love the old. Great point of discourse you brought up in this video.

    I would love to know why Ben chose to progressively sing an octave higher with each album? It’s so weird to me, surely it’s harder to sing as they tour more and more and the deeper voice from LNOTGY sounds so much better. I’d love to know any theories behind this vocal choice

    • @PopPunkApologist
      @PopPunkApologist  Před 7 měsíci

      Do you think this new album sounds higher pitched too? I was thinking it’s closer to LNOTGY vocally than ADAI or TPATP

      @@PopPunkApologistsome songs have sorta LNOTGY but its not even close
      Its all higher octave.
      In my opinion i wish they would switch up the singing styles
      Sum songs lower some songs higher
      And even sum songs mixed vocals

    I have no idea who Neck Deep are(is?) but I think the mindset of “oh nothings gonna top this record” is just weird way to say that’s your favorite record. Like it’s okay to have a favorite record but when it gets to the point where you start comparing it to other record is a bit odd. Like the beauty and uniqueness of that record is that it’s its own record. It’s not gonna sound the same or have the sane energy as any other records because it’s not them. Comparing records to one that you are already biased to shows that you just wanna get spoon fed the same stuff and don’t want the band to evolve and grow. I think this is kinda similar to the point you were making but I definitely agree with it.

    Is this new album the best album Neck Deep ever made? No? Is it a really good album? Yeah! Neck Deep is great! Their albums in the future will never top Life's Not Out to Get You, but they will still be making awesome music!

    Damsel in distress is one of their best songs imo. Easily top 10 for me. This record though is fantastic. I’m not going to place it in any order right now because it’s only been out a week and I’ve had 10 years to sit with their other records and that isn’t fair, but I do genuinely love the new record

    Hi. Recently discovered your channel and have enjoyed it a lot so far. Regarding the self-titled, I found myself enjoying a few of the songs but it wasn't all killer no filler like LNOTGY. I ended up seeing them on their US tour and thoroughly enjoyed all of it except for one song they played off their new album that didn't really do anything for me, but most of the singles and some of the album tracks are really catchy and caught on with me from the jump. Having given this album a few months to really digest with me, I think it is solid and wasn't as disappointing as maybe I had initially thought, but it really is so hard to not compare anything they release to LNOTGY.

    • @PopPunkApologist
      @PopPunkApologist  Před 5 měsíci

      Thanks for tuning in! Totally agree that it's solid, but I haven't felt much pull to come back to it since release. For me it's perfectly serviceable pop-punk, with a couple of gems sprinkled in.

    I’m a pretty new fan of these guys, I found them as All Distortions was released, so my opinion is probably a little different to yours. Without a doubt LNOTGY is my favourite from them, but I have a soft spot for Wishful Thinking and TPATP too, and actually quite enjoy a lot of what they were going for with ADAI… so hearing this new album pulling bits from all their prior records, I was excited. It sounds familiar yet new, and it sounds like they had a blast recording it. Definitely not their strongest overall but I think it’s a consistently great album with tons of nice little instrumental moments. Sam especially seems to have gone above and beyond for this album, the guitar riffs and solos are some of the highlights.
    Overall, with my “new fan” perspective, I really liked it. It was nice to experience a release with a sound similar to albums I wasn’t there for when they were new.
    …and Dumbstruck Dumbfuck is a banger. One of their absolute best for me.

    idk man to me it’s just bad. it’s not the worst thing ever, and i don’t not like it because it doesn’t live up to life’s not out to get you it’s just overall not good. every single song is verse chorus verse chorus bridge chorus, sometimes with a little riff at the beginning, and either about a girl, the government, or how life’s not that bad. not that any of that’s wrong or inherently bad, stfu is like that and and most of the old songs are too but it’s executed so well on those and with this it’s just all so vague. imo lyrics are good when they highlight very specific emotions because you can either relate to them or hear a new perspective. idk it just sounds like what pop punk sounds like to people that hate pop punk. no hate to anyone though, still gonna support the band. i’m just complaining bc i’m bored and on the internet. maybe i should take bens advice and go outside lmao
