Making A Smoky Quartz Triangular Pendant: A Silversmithing Tutorial
Vložit
- čas přidán 6. 03. 2023
- This video tutorial shows me making a setting for a large triangular faceted Smoky Quartz. This is an improvement on a design I made my wife years ago. The materials I used were: 18 gauge sterling silver sheet, 8 gauge sterling half-round wire, and 14 gauge sterling round wire This one includes the basic steps to build a setting for a large triangular faceted stone. As always I am using exclusively hard silver solder, and I use My-T-Flux from Rio Grande. I would rate this one as an advanced project. This video is a bit longer, but is a detailed tutorial, so I think it is worth the watch time. I enjoy sharing my knowledge with others, as I've taught people for most of my life. This hobby turned into a fun side gig for me for years while I taught public school. I love suggestions and hearing about others' experiences. What is your favorite project? What kind of tutorials would you find useful?

Another brilliant tutorial chad, thanks so much. It’s unusual and unique, thanks again for sharing 🤩
Thanks Karrie! I've been meaning to update this setting style for a while. Glad you liked it:)
That was a wonderful tutorial! Definitely not a beginner project but one to strive to accomplish!
Glad you liked it Tammie!
That turned out great. Excellent thinking on improving on the first design. I may have to try this one.
It really shows of a big faceted stone well, and having a rounded back helps it to move and sparkle more:). Thanks Beto!
Really cool! You make it look so easy. Maybe one day it will be for me, too!
❤Thank you Wendy! Just keep practicing. It’ll get easier as you go! I appreciate your donation!
Stunning piece, I’ll have to try this one day. Thanks so much for sharing.
You’re welcome Pat!
Really interesting 3D style pendant, thank you as always for your genius
Thanks Chris! I appreciate your kind words!
Very unusual stone and setting. Looks great.
Thanks Gillian!
Great pendant! Great bwork with that saw today buddy! 😆
Thanks Sheri:). I like my new saw. Perhaps I will learn to like doing it!
Thank you so much for sharing information like this!
I'm really glad it was useful for you Stormy! Thanks for the nice comment:)
That is an excellent way to do the prongs, thanks got an idea for my large stone
I hope you'll show us over on Patreon Nikki! Thanks for the nice comment:)
I have the same saw. I finally made a version of your off centre square pendant.
You should send a picture to my Instagram so I can see your version. What stone did you pick?
@@chadssilversmithing i have to do a final scratch remonal and polish.
Love this! Might be difficult to shine up under the stone.
That is an issue with this design. I set it higher this time in order to allow better access to those surfaces. It helped, but still a little challenging.
Thanks so much for your videos❣️
Thank you Brenda for your generosity! I’m glad you like them:)
Beautiful!
Thanks Carol. I really like how this one turned out!
Well it looks like I bought you 5 coffees. When I was sending you 5 the site froze so I hit it 5 times not realizing that it was counting each one, because it was not doing anything. I had to back out and when I came back in it counted all the others! But oh well! Your videos are worth it!🙂
I think I can have it refund you if you like, but I’ve never tried it. Would you like me to try to figure it out?
@@chadssilversmithing no no I want you to have it! I wish I could do more! Drink coffee and enjoy!!! I so enjoy your videos! I really do learn alot from them! Your a really good teacher! Thank you!
@@tammiehonican76 Thanks Tammie! You’re awesome!
I love that you are ok with not liking sawing- right on! I find that sawing on the biggest piece of metal I can is helpful. I saw out the inner shape (triangle) first and then cut/saw the outside frame shape. It's still a challenge no matter what! I like this setting. I also like the first one. It has a bareness, a clean look. 🌺
What do you mean by "firecoat"?
Just a term for mild fire scale. Sawing is growing on me:)
Another great video. You are the master with the torch. What is the torch and gas you are using? Thank you for sharing.
Thanks Gordo! I use an acetylene/air torch by Smith. It used to be called the Handi-heat or Handi-torch, but they rebranded it The Silversmith Torch:)
The one thing I hate about sawing, other than breaking blades which I tend to do cos I’m impatient lol, is the whole put an indent, drill a hole, undo your saw, REdo your saw and tension your blade, cut the piece, remove your blade, replace the blade and tension it again palaver, all just to cut one negative space. This I must admit is mostly because my saw is very old and was very cheap lol. The reason that matters is that when tensioning it, unless you position the blade just right, the screw won’t grip it, so you have to do it again…..did I mention “impatient”? Lol Lesson to those starting out in jewellery making, buy a decent saw. A cheap one WILL drive you insane. That’s a really pretty stone btw.
My sawing experience has drastically improved since I got the C shaped saw:). Thanks for the good comment!
Beautiful pendant, I love the look and shape of it! Did you file the prongs at all to prepare them to set to stone and or did you cut them to size?
I both filed an indented horizontal trench for the girdle to rest in and thinned out the half-round significantly to make it possible to bend them down without putting too much pressure on the stone so as not to risk cracking or chipping it. How was that for a long awkward sentence? I really like the pieces you’ve been posting lately Andrea!
@@chadssilversmithing Thank you Chad, your videos have been inspiring me!
Wow, that's a big stone. I was expecting it to be around 1/2". Best thing I ever did to help my sawing was to raise my bench peg to chest height. I screwed it to the end of a piece of 3"x4" about 5" long that I'd drilled a hole through so I could clamp it to my bench. Fantastic work as always and thanks for sharing.
That’s a good idea. I’ve been meaning to make myself an actual nice bench pin:)
