    Had my first VR session the other day, I played for almost 2 hours non stop and started to feel it about an hour and 30 minutes in, absolutely love my VR but definitely suggest limiting your playtime

    • @liveopenmike
      @liveopenmike  Před 6 měsíci

      The fact that you went 90 minutes in your first session is admirable. I think I got about 45 minutes before I had to stop.

    Also, if a person wears eye glasses for distance, there are prescription inserts that can be purchased from various vendors. If your distance vision is good but you wear glasses to read, then you don't need these inserts, normally the focal point in VR is 3 meters to infinity. Make sure you have your IPD (distance between your eyes pupils) is set as close to perfect as you can and make sure your eyes are aligned with the sweet spot of the HMD's optics for the best clarity, also, the closer your eyes are to the HMD's optics, the better the FOV (Field Of View) will be for any given HMD.
    As mentioned in the video, start slow and don't stay in the HMD for too long, if things don't feel right, you can always close your eyes while in VR. I don't agree with not starting with a roller coaster ride, the trick is look straight ahead, do NOT look to the sides or up and down, my 1st few VR experiences were roller coasters and as time went on and I got use to it, I started looking to the sides, I can't say it felt great at first but after a few times, I got use to it and now it doesn't bother me at all.
    I've been into VR since 2017 and love VR, sometimes in VR, you just have to tell yourself "This isn't real" LOL :)
    Also, if the HMD supports 90hz refresh rate, go with that, any lower for VR newbies can help accelerate the ill feeling, once use to it, you can lower this if you wish.

    • @liveopenmike
      @liveopenmike  Před 9 měsíci +2

      Your description of how you handled the roller coaster is specifically why I don't recommend it for a first playthrough. To enjoy the experience, you have to limit what you do. One of the great immersive things is VR is to look around at the world you've been transported to. So it feels like a waste. I'd rather stick a newbie in something where they can take it all in. Thanks for watching!

      @liveopenmike  Před 13 hodinami

      Mods are notorious for having some shakiness with motion controls. Obviously the modders don't have direct code access, so they can't do optimization at the base level to ensure a smoother experience. I never recommend mods for new VR users for that reason.

So this is super helpful - any reccs for motion sickness proof games is welcome 😅

    • @liveopenmike
      @liveopenmike  Před 7 měsíci +2

      The less artificial motion, the better. That’s part of Beat Saber’s success (and other rhythm games). You’re totally in charge of any movement. Resolution Games are great games that are easy for new users to start with. Cookout, Demeo, Blaston, and Ultimechs are all free and fun games to play. If you’re wanting a shooter, try Hyperdash (also free).

      @@symoneallijohn6241I have the WORST motion sickness of maybe anyone and sadly have to skip most of the best games until someone finds a cure. 😭 but Beat Saber is definitely awesome, Red Matter, Moss, ForeVR Darts, The Room, Tetris (amazing) and Creed: Rise to Glory are some no-sickness games with teleport and snap turn if you need it. And Horizon Worlds is a fun place to explore (also has teleport, snap turn options) with pretty much endless content to check out and meet other ppl. 😁

    I just got my Meta Quest 3 a little over a week ago. Was excited for Asgards Wrath 2 and I was fine my first play session. Last 3 have made me feel motion sick so I backed off. Like you said games like Pistol Whip, or rhythm type games are fine. Anything with snap turning seems fine so going to try to stick with those types of games for now. But I really want to play Asgards Wrath 2. Patience patience patience.

    • @liveopenmike
      @liveopenmike  Před 5 měsíci

      Yeah, as much as I LOVE Asgard's Wrath 2, it's a terrible first VR game. Hope you can build your tolerance up and get into it properly in a few weeks. I believe it has snap turning, but then there's the wall running and follower mount riding.
      If you're looking for some RPG flavor that may be easier on your vertigo, check out Journey of the Gods (aesthetically not a masterpiece, but a great 4-6hr adventure) or Ruins Magus.

I am doing research for my master's thesis and even though your info sounds valuable, it's unusable without any sources right now. So, in console and PC gaming, a narrow FOV in FPSers can make me super nauseous (non VR). Interesting that vignetting would reduce nausea when it essentially reduces FOV. I wonder if a larger FOV headset would create less nausea when playing FPS games or increase it, whereas in flat gaming, a large FOV reduces it.

    • @liveopenmike
      @liveopenmike  Před 9 měsíci +1

      I think the vignette helps specifically because of foveated rendering. Blurring the things you're not directly looking at (this doesn't include eye tracking foveated rendering) is essentially another form of motion blur.

    • @liveopenmike
      @liveopenmike  Před 9 měsíci +2

      Also, for FPS specifically, which is more fast twitch reaction than any other game, narrower FOV is absolutely a bad thing because you're TRYING to look everywhere. For a flying or racing game, the motion blur especially as you're turning quickly will send folks loopy. I've seen it personally.

      Can I ask what you played? Most people starting out in VR tend to pick the wrong games. I know Quest 3 was packaged with Asgard's Wrath 2 and that's a horrible first VR game.

      @@liveopenmike oh literally everything. I started with beat saber and walkabout mini golf. Then moss. I tried rec room and the movement killed me. Even the minigolf gives me delayed migraine which sucks. I tried resi 4 before and even with snap movement I get instantly nauseous. I get car sick very easily so I think VR is not for me. Also tried the room vr and half life Alyx. My brain is always just like wtf. Thumper I felt like I was going to have a seizure.

      I go on deep sea fishing trips, long car rides never once gotten motion sickness until I just today got a quest 3. I’ve always wanted to play ghost of Tabor and other games but I’m almost tempted to return it as I got so sick playing for about an hour. I had so much fun playing but like the video said it’s tricking my brain into thinking I’m moving and looking. It just feels strange moving with a joystick and then trying to look or look and use the joystick to also look more quickly. Great video will keep trying and to build up a tolerance and go slower at first.

    • @liveopenmike
      @liveopenmike  Před 7 měsíci +1

      @@logan039 Tabor is an AWFUL first game to try in VR. Check out some on rails shooters if you really want some VR gunplay while you get your sea legs.
      Zombieland, Drop Dead Dual Strike, Dead Second, Superhot, and Hyperdash are all going to be a bit easier to handle and help build that tolerance up.
      Good luck! I hope you do stick with it.
