- Honey Boy: Shia LaBeouf, Noah Jupe, Alma Har'el, Byron Bowers Interview
Let me start off by saying how much I loved director Alma Har'el’s Honey Boy. The fantastic film was written by Shia LaBeouf and the semi-autobiographical drama pulls no punches as he draws back the curtain on his childhood in Hollywood and his complicated relationship with his father (who LaBeouf plays in the film), told across different time periods. One part sees Lucas Hedges playing a character named Otis Lort (it’s clearly LaBeouf), who has landed in rehab after a traffic accident. The other part has Noah Jupe playing the younger Otis when he’s working on an unnamed TV show (it’s most likely Even Stevens) and living with his abusive father (LaBeouf), who is also his acting coach. One of the many reasons why I loved the film is Har’el’s feature narrative debut always feels authentic and every performance is pitch-perfect. I can’t recommend this movie enough.
A few days ago at a Los Angeles hotel, I sat down with Shia LaBeouf, Alma Har'el, Byron Bowers, and Noah Jupe for an exclusive interview. Usually, when you talk to a large group it can be difficult to keep everyone engaged in the conversation, but it was clear right from the start that they all loved working with each other and share a special bond. They talked about fun moments from filming, how they prepared for their roles, how difficult was it for LaBeouf to tell his story, what it was like for him to play his father, what they were most concerned about with the limitations of a 20-day shoot, and so much more.
If you’re curious how Honey Boy was made or just want to watch a really fun interview, you’ll enjoy this conversation. Check out what they had to say in the player above and below is what we talked about.

Shia is quite possibly the most underrated actor of our generation
not for long! I hope he keeps shining
Agreed. Hopefully there’s an Oscar in his future
his personal life, often times, get in the way of his talent
obi was here now he is using his personal life to show his talent in a new way. Can’t wait to watch this movie
obi was here that makes him bonafide
watch out, Noah Jupe is gonna kick Hollywood's ass , in his career.
I just want to give Shia a hug after this film.
I love Noah's style! He's so confident. What a fantastic actor too; Wonder, A Quiet Place, Honey Boy, Ford vs Ferrari. If he's this good at 14 just imagine him in 10 years.
Ur forgetting Super 8
@evan mack Oh lmao, damn. My bad
if you like Noah then check out The Night Manager; an adaptation to the John Le Carre book. Think it was the first 'big' production he was in... His character is not central to the plot, but nevertheless The Night Manager is so so good that it's worth mentioning. [Must have Amazon Prime though].
oh good i cant get enough of him hes so fantastic and i want the best for him!
Ikr
Who else came for Shia, Alma and Noah and stayed for Byron? Dude's hilarious. "You ever been bit by a mosquito?" lmao
Puberty hit noah like a truck, he looks so different from Wonder and then his filming of Honey boy
He still look baby-ish in Quiet Place
I like Noah before Noah he hit puppetry
@@randommovieedits5829 really??? I think he looks more attractive now but oh well he was really cute back then too
@@ayannah-sabrinayao8732 same . i love him . its an obsession really
@@chloe-dh8ii frrr
Noah Jupe is- literally, perfect.
Then there’s me
Always had a soft spot for Shia, especially through the antics. Glad he's got back some control, and that he's so open and embracing of therapy. Everyone needs help sometimes!
Alma’s absolutely correct, trauma never happens like... as it happens? i didn’t know i was traumatized until i went to therapy and Alma does such a good job at displaying that dynamic and how it feels to be abused and especially processing that idea. Shia putting his life out there and having to re-live it, especially as his father that’s such an incredible feat and it’s so wildly impressive that he didn’t break down. You can also see just how he connects with Noah, on and off screen, and how he respects Noah’s dedication to his craft. It’s so incredible. And Byron does such a good job at weaving himself into that dynamic as not being part of the family dynamic which is hard to navigate in real life so i can only imagine how difficult it is in film. A honest thank you to everyone involved this film is a masterpiece and it’s worth so much to me.
I couldn't agree more. Beautifully said.
Yes. Trauma is not an event. It’s a bunch a stuff adding up. And one day. It hits you. Over time, it hits you over and over. Soul injuries.
Shia is so real and very respectable. I truly think he will be one of the greatest artist of our time. Maybe all time. Love him
He's definitely going to end up being super respected by his peers. He's clearly changed his ways and gotten a hold of his demons. Let's hope the demons leave him alone for good.
well this didn't age well...
@@lizzzies what do you mean?
Puberty is no joke, goddamn.
I just finished this movie and I cried my eyes out when he is talking to his dad at the very end of the movie when his dad says "just make me look good" omg! So powerful! I'm 32 so I'm an even Stevens fan. I just admire Shia LeBeouf so much!🥺🥺🥺
What’s the movie about
@@eyeshadow4829 The movie is about Shai LaBeoufs childhood and the trauma his dad put him through
That mosquito bit was so on point lol
joaquin phoenix gave a very dramatic performance of an abused-to-abuser in 2019. shia gave the most grounded and convincing performance of an abused-to-abuser in 2019
Lmfao “I ain’t even got no lotion” 😂😂😂😂😂 when I tell you I cried💀
This is the first interview I’ve watched of Noah, after two viewings of Honey Boy, and I had no idea he wasn’t American. He did an amazing job in the film, I’m so excited for his future films
"just roll with the sincerity of this interview for 5 seconds for crying out loud... " I love the reality of this interview and chemistry bt shia and noah
Noah gave an amazing performance in Honey Boy. His emotions just came through so easily that I was constantly moved. However, I wish so much that he had that deeper raspy voice that Shia had in his Stevens days. I know he can’t help it, but his high pitched voice made him seem younger (like 10-11).
This was supposed to be set right at the beginning of his Even Stevens days. He wo7od have been young and squeaky...
Shia's speaking voice that time wasnt as pitchy-high as Even stevens..that was him stay in character, along with that nostril. I remember his early interviews on disney, he had normal pre-teen voice. If you watch Project Greenlight season 2, his speaking voice also normal. I believe he used different pitch for acting purposes. But I do agree Noah should impersonate Loius Stevens in some of Even stevens shooting scene.
i love noah’s style. his acting and everything is SOOO GOOD at his age. since he is sooo good know imagine him in a few years time!
As the father Shia played, I also loved this film. All of the performances were wonderful, and the crew from Alma to craft service can be proud. As I am proud of my Son. A word for Noah, if you ever need a parent on the set I am available.
that is very touching! Thank you for allowing to see your story!
Ptsd sucks bro
how did u feel seeing Shia play your part and not Mel Gibson lol
Wait, you're Shia Labeof's dad?! Tell him I couldn't stop rewatching it.
It's hard to believe this is his dad but Okay..... I highly doubt it...
How did the kid age like 7 years since filming?
He's 14. That's growth time.
I know right when I saw Noah in the trailer he looked so young
It's called puberty. It happens in your teen years.
brittyn It’s called a joke. It went over your head.
Puberty and movies take time to make and release.
This film made me APPRECIATE Shia soooo much more. Beautiful. Raw. Thank you for letting us in. Thank you!
The explosion metaphor @16:35 is beautifully said.
Her empathy for Shia makes my eyes teary ...
I’ve watched A LOT of interviews related to this movie and this has to be my favorite
Excellent job Frosty getting these expressive responses from the interviewees.
I just got done watching it for the 1st time and my god. I teared up at times. He wrote what I think is a masterpiece
My absolute favorite interview for this film. Hands down.
Shia is a rockstar! so happy to see beautiful talented people keeping the art and originality in film today...
I would have to say, this is the greatest script ive seen in a long while. Shia, please post the video footage you illuminated regarding the precipice of this movie. I loved this movie , although painful and dark at times, all the way through. My favorite part was the ending. This was a very insightful doc piece, Thank you
He must be protected at all costs. This man is a gem. His movie opened up a scab I never even knew I had with my own father. I cried almost the entire film. I wish I could thank him in person for sharing something so intimate with me and everyone... I know it helped me accept so much. I wish I could shake his hand or hug his neck. I love him...
That was a great interview
Love this so much, and I love everything about Shia, including his sincerity. This interview was great-I definitely think it was overlooked how incredibly Lucas played adult Otis / Shia going through his breakdown and recovery process (and maybe just overlooked for timing purposes). Even though they look almost nothing alike, he portrayed his antics, almost frantic speaking style, his nervous tics, his internal explosions so beautifully that you would’ve thought it WAS Shia. This was such an incredible film, it literally rips your heart out-and it’s my opinion that it especially speaks to the soul of any emotionally abused child who is now an adult who also very much loved their parent/s and just wanted their love and affection in return. CATHARTIC is what this movie is, for Shia, for us... Shia taught me that word in an interview long ago, and it keeps coming back to me with this film. I love that man.
Thank you for making me cry as much with this comment as I did after the film was over. This film was cathartic for me too, for a whole multitude of reasons. It fucked me up so bad and it was in a way that I think will ultimately be really good for me in the long run. It's a masterpiece.
Thank you to all involved for making this film. Sincerely.
This is brilliant Frosty!!!!
noah reminds me of matty healy
4:35 LMAOO HE LEFT HIM HANGING
Cheeky mug lol
Hahahahahahaha 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣🤣😅😅😅I just laughed so hard my cheeks are hurting
omg I'm soft for Shia and I can't believe Noah is grown up so fast, They practiced a lot for this film and the effort are just amazing
Thank you for sharing something so personal. God Bless and keep moving forward.
I relate to Shia with his story in a parallel way. I've lived what he lived with his father. Exploitation, grief, being the parent, parenting the parent, losing childhood, wanting to see your parent step up and be one... waiting for it. As an adult now I still wait, though I love her very much I come to terms that she will never be what I want but... I still wait. I don't tell my family much about her, they know a bit of what she's like from what they see but I can't bear to paint her badly with the people she calls family. "Just make me look good", Ma, I'm tryin'. Only children are aliens, but only and alone make you one hell of a misunderstood child-adult. Oh, Shia. I feels.
Outstanding!! 💗
This is so adorable.
only shia can make you watch a 25 mins interview!!
Shias answer was so powerful how he casted Noah and the journalist responded with “sure” I know they are there to ask questions but that was way too powerful to dismiss . @5:02-7:24
Omg Noah is the cutest boy in the world I wanna give him a hug 🥰 he’s a adorable
Noah is so Adorable♥️♥️♥️
i will deff be seeing it.... Always loved shia
You're cute
Where is Lucas Hedges though? I just adored his performance in Honey Boy
It's all about honest communication
and Shia is truly honest!! i love it about him...
Thats way the movie is so good... cheerz
It’s weird hearing Noah swear now lol
Yeah what time
He swore in the movie a ton aswell.
He also swore at 14:00
Alma is a goddess, i love her
“I dont even got no lotion”😂😂😂
10:40 noah playing with the guy's shoe
I wanna see this movie so bad but they aren’t playing it at any theaters where I live😪
GHOST BUCKLEY I KNOOW. I check every other day. I never wanted to go to the movies so bad lol
It's on Amazon. I wish it was in theaters haha
I traveled 2 hour to see it last night
I traveled 40 min to watch it lol. They play it in select theatres
GHOST BUCKLEY bruh I drove an hour to go see it. It was playing no where near me while at school or back home. Ended up making the trip while on xmas break. WORTH IT
Shia makes everything great! Such a good, honest, deep movie, heartbreaking too. Whats next? I want more Shia movies! ❤
I love you more Shia♥️
He’s so good at speaking
Shia is gorgeous, and such a talented actor.
A light in the darkness that life can be............
7:20 "sure." That's all you have to respond to that?? Bahahahaaaa
Casandra Lopez I thought the exact same thing! Shia’s going in depth explaining this process of this beautiful chemistry between their team, and dude doesn’t even seem interested. Beautiful movie.
Im astonished there's not more comments on the interviewer, during the answers he doesn't give many non verbal responses or acknowledgement. The questions are delivered abruptly rather than being dynamic based on the responses, very dissapointing.
exactly !
MrChickenCottage Based on Shia’s comment at the beginning about how the interviewer had never been this nice to him, it seems they don’t like each other very much.
@@klc7275 yeah I noticed that. Surely someone grabbed that line he copied from the film which the dad said to Tom “I appreciate you man...”
When noah did that eyebrow raise though.... LOL 😂😂😂😂
Shia. This guy! I'm a fan.
GOD BLESS U SHIA
MY BROTHER❤❤❤❤
6:33 "He was never an Even Steven's fan" lol was this kid even born when Even Stevens was on the air!? That was my shit growing up!
Noah was born in 2005 2 years after Even Stevens ended. And by the time he knew movies and TVs, Shia's no longer appearing in blockbuster movies. Most of Shia's movies after that not suitable for kids.
3:11 ladies first 😩💍💖💖💖🛐🛐
Alma Har'el looks a bit like Princess Merida. :) :)
can you please post the scene that was cut ? the one non-linear scene? thank you..
Love how the interviewer has painted nails
no bc noah is literally perfect
Loved this film.
im fucking excited to see this movie.
From a writer's perspective, writing about childhood and adult trauma can be cathartic but only short term... Its best not to dwell on it further for mental health issues... Trust me... Every time i go back to trying to write new material of my past, it doesn't work out and i realize that it never will... I need therapy... That being said...i hope we can see more films from shia since hes a really good writer and actor. I support you!
I love this comment. Thanks a lot, helped me more than you know
fucking amazing and inspiring... damn
Phenomenal
can someone explain this? i mean the red girl hair was in the cast but i didn’t see her in the movie
"Man, I wonder what them people in Dunkirk went through" LOL!
Love Shia so much but is Alma even real?!? She seems like such a light of a human, so beautiful ✨
Shia is a great actor :)
Go watch this movie. One of the best movies I've seen in the last 10 years.
Is this movie on CZcams?
noah is so adorable stop
Why was the director not comfortable saying that the movie was rewritten in some parts? Even shia's dad recently said in an interview that the script that he saw was changed just like shia said in this interview.
3:11
It's the "ladies first" for me
Loved the film
this is dumb but I love where Shia says Noah was beautiful in the car smashing scene at 11:55 because he really is such a beautiful boy, and the scene he's talking about he really is so beautiful in it
Noah is like a young Matty Healy from The 1975
I JAVE WATCHED TJIS INTERVIEW TO MANY TIMES🌝
This interview has piqued my interest in this film, now. Way to go Honey Boy and especially Shia LaB eouf for carrying it brilliantly and yet with so much humility 💙
really bugs me how shia answered his question about how they found their chemistry with a long in-depth answer just for the interviewer to say “sure.”
Same!
Also, there was no need to constantly cut back to the interviewer's reactions to the answers being given.
Where can we watch this movie?
blueflash1374 prime video
I don’t understand who the girl with red hair is, I have never watched Honey boy before but She isn’t in the cast on google so who is she??
Shia is on the right track. Stay healthy dude!
if i could only quote that gunna song "oh okay"
I love the interviewers shirt. (Fight club)
with van gogh’s painting
Good save kid good save 😂
look at his hand this is so sad @4:34
Frosty seems super nervous lol. Almost like facial tick nervous.
If you like Noah Jupe, check out the adaptation to John Le Carre's book entitled THE NIGHT MANAGER. It's on Amazon Prime and is one of the best shows I've seen in years. It is also the first big production Noah was in, [albeit his character is not central to the plot].
Noah reminds me of a younger miniature version of Matty Healy.. anyone else?
I. LOVE. NOAH😃
What's noah wearing on his feet they look like high heels?
