  • 6 Times Football Teams Have Lost A Game On Purpose
After gameweek 37 in the premier league, the question on everyone's mind is the same - Did Manchester United and Tottenham lose intentionally to dent their rivals' chances of winning the league?
This has inspired us to look at 6 times football teams have lost a game on purpose.
And yes, we'll start from the double header that was United vs Arsenal and Tottenham vs Manchester City.
With nothing to play for, the Red Devils welcomed Arsenal to Old Trafford. They would have remained in the same spot on the league table with a victory, defeat, or tie. Therefore, it was a welcome surprise when they gave a really good performance. Even though they lost 1-0, it was a significant improvement over their previous performance.
The same though, can not be said for Tottenham who were actively fighting for a spot in the top four.
Infact, Tottenham had won each of their last four Premier League home games against Manchester City without conceding a single goal. So imagine our surprise when their defense let a feeble pass run through for Haaland’s first goal.
To make matters worse, Son Heung Min shot right at Ederson when he could have just rounded him up before finishing.
From the reaction online, Spurs fans seem happy that their loss will prevent Arsenal from winning the league. We can't help but wonder if the team also came into the game with the same mindset.

Honestly you’ve got to admire the planning involved by Man Utd and Spurs to try and deflect any suspicious of throwing their games. Spurs started playing like crap 5 games ago to cover up their plan.
The real credit goes to Man Utd though, to play like garbage for a whole season just to avoid suspicion of throwing the Arsenal game to hurt City is next level stuff, kudos Man Utd, kudos.

Man Utd play like garbage because their players are not very good. Last season they over performed as Casemiro and Ericken had their last Indian Summer. This season they have bought very bad. Mount is finished, the keeper is not an improvement on what they had, Amrabat is not fast enough for the Prem and the less said about Hojlund the better.

"Me" right now, at present, at this age, a grandad, would never have allowed Foden to pass that ball which resulted in the first goal; plus Spurs fans in a standing ovation, happily cheering as their team is being thrashed at home turf, to the detriment of losing a Champions League slot?.....uh? Honorable Mentions:
1.Thailand vs Indonesia in 1998 Tiger Cup (now AFF/ASEAN Championship): Indonesian player scored an own goal to seal a victory for Thailand in a deliberate way, as the winner of this match must face Vietnam, the host of that tournament. Both countries were punished by FIFA as a result of match-fixing allegiation.
2.Peru vs Colombia in 2018 World Cup qualifiers: Both teams decided to play a boring draw on the final day of the World Cup qualifiers that would have denied Chile's spot, though this proved meaningless, as Chile also failed to beat Brazil at the same time.
3.Borussia Moenchengladbach vs Borussia Dortmund in 1977-78 Bundesliga: Gladbach scored 12 goals during that game, knowing that the result would have sealed a Bundesliga title, but in the end, the title went to 1.FC Koln on goal differences thanks to 5-0 victory over St.Pauli. The Dortmund manager at that time was the same guy that led Greece to the historic Euro 2004 win, Otto Rehhagel.

It was Ortega who saved that and not Ederson . Plus, Tottenham defense didn't do that on purpose because they have been passive this season like last season in terms of conceding goals . Romero isn't that good defender and if they wanted themselves to lose why did Dragusin save that City chance off the line in the first half and why did Vicario smother that close range shot from Foden? . Your opinion that Spurs let themselves lose is not correct. City are powerful and they don't need any gifts. They're just smashing their opponents and they deserve to win. Stop trying to overthink about matters.
