    She will be in Pyeongchang in 2018 and she will rule. She's still very young and she's got a long career ahead of her. She is a skater that hopefully did not peak too early, like Timothy Goebel did. Fingers crossed she will keep being amazing and kick the holy crap out of her competitors and get the title and the spot to the Olympics that she deserves.

    i think the worst part about this whole situation is that usfs's decision was completely contradictory to the spirit of the olympics, where it doesn't matter if you're an unknown, complete underdog or the overwhelming favorite with world championships under your belt, it just matters how you skate in that moment. i also have to point out that mirai looked much more elegant on the ice than any of the girls, including gracie. she has something about her that is reminiscent of (although not as refined) michelle kwan and sasha cohen. i mean, get this new generation of girls in some ballet lessons; nobody looks graceful anymore!

    • @locomadre3520
      @locomadre3520 Před 10 lety +15

      mwright166 She doesn't have to PROVE she's worth anything....she is a lovely young woman, an awesome skater, and she had already PROVEN herself as an athlete and serious Olympic contender at Nationals....then this greedy conceited heavily made up wannabe steals her dream....now, I suppose that every move Mirai makes will be scrutinized to justify the ugly wrong done to her AND the USA....I don't care if it is considered making excuses....she was heartsick at 4 continents and that's just as bad as skating with injury....interesting that Wags is in Sochi after two poor EXCUSES for programs at the Nationals...and lapping up the press...making a name for herself...she already has a name but I don't think it's quite what she had in mind....I truly believe that Mirai was grieving and having this come up so soon after she was knifed/robbed/slashed/demeaned/thrown away/insulted/snubbed....well, again.....try doing your best....if this had been Wags she wouldn't have even deigned to skate or as another poster said... if she had deigned she would have been sobbing and sniveling and all over the news with her sob story about how she waited 4 years...(and the others...they didn't?).....hard to come out with guns blazing when some dirty THIEF has stolen your bullets!

    • @BarsQUEEN16
      @BarsQUEEN16 Před 10 lety +7

      loco madre You know what, I've spent enough time arguing this issue with other people that I'm tired of it already. You believe what you want. I believe Ashley is the better contender and a better skater that Mirai. That is my opinion and I'm entitled to it. Why is Ashley not allowed to have bad skates but Mirai is and should still deserve to go to Sochi?? 10th at competition full other skaters not going to Sochi and she can't even beat them. I'm sorry, but if she went to Sochi she would place worse than Ashley and hurt the team performance. You're analogies are quite pathetic, skaters train everyday learn to get over unfortunate occurrences. The fact that she couldn't only proves her weakness. Just to let you know, you can reply if you want but what you have to say is pointless to me because my mind will not be changed.

    One of the most heart-breaking performances I've ever seen. I think it worked out for the best. Ashley did deserve that spot and Mirai got another go.

  • @twentysevenand
    @twentysevenand Před 10 lety +85

    I think it's easy to blame Ashley Wagner and say she took Mirai's spot. But Polina Edmunds have had no international experience before the Olympics. Though she won 2nd in Nationals, she had no body of work to compare with. No offense to Polina, but I think she should've been the one left off the Olympic team. Polina is still 15 after all.

    • @indysk8r32
      @indysk8r32 Před 9 lety +11

      My thoughts exactly. I think Polina certainly skated very well at Nationals and the Olympics, but I think it should've been Gold, Nagasu, and Wagner. I still can't believe they decided between Nagasu and Wagner and not Edmunds and Wagner simply because of experience.

    • @brendaizquierdo5695
      @brendaizquierdo5695 Před 9 lety +13

      I CAN'T BELIEVE THIS, Polina Edmunds skated her heart out in Nationals, she was a little girl, without experience and yet she got higher scores than many seasoned skaters. She EARNED her spot in the Olympic team, just like Mirai did. Ashley Wagner fell on her butt twice in a single night. Fuck all her previous accomplishments, Figure Skating is NOT a cumulative sport. It's all about how you skate for a few seconds. It should have been Gold + Edmunds + Nagasu for the Olympics. Period.

    • @twentysevenand
      @twentysevenand Před 9 lety +11

      Brenda Izquierdo Wow, chill. I said my piece according to the same logic USFS used against Mirai. If USFS was gunna bring up Ashley Wagner based on her year's results, why didn't they do the same with Mirai? Between Polina and Mirai, Mirai at least had more senior experience. By the same logic that brought Ashley over Mirai, Mirai would've beaten out Polina.

  • @gtomao
    @gtomao Před 10 lety +10

    Absolutely BEAUTIFUL performance, and a true highlight of the week in Boston. I was there, standing up for Jason Brown before he finished his free skate, watching unknowns like Polina rise up etc...here's my take, and it's been mentioned below already. The USFC is corrupt. period. They have always snubbed Mirai and it shook her confidence after her incredible journey in Vancouver where she had I believe the 2nd best free skate, behind Queen Yuna. She came into Boston determined and in my opinion, skated better than anyone. They downgraded a few of her elements in both performances but then came the kicker...during the awards ceremony, both Nancy Kerrigan, and the old hag who is the head of FS spent close to 30seconds each talking to Ashley Wagner, who by the way was standing RIGHT NEXT to Mirai...apparently telling her she will be ok. Bottom line, in my opinion, if you want to bitch and moan about the results (as I have for over a month now), be upset that they took a 15 year-old with less than a full year in senior level skating under her belt. Why, you ask? She was great...blah, blah blah...HERE'S WHY: The hag herself told the skating-loving crowd that Ashley was being picked based on her WHOLE PACKAGE and EXPERIENCE. Ok...so logically they would want to take the girl who placed FOURTH in the Vancouver Olympics over an unknown girl who has a chance at 2-3 more Olympic experiences, right? Wrong. It was sooo sad, and left a very bad taste in most of the crowd's mouths...USFC was hypocritical in their reasoning and THAT'S what hurts. I can't believe Mirai had the courage to come out and do this exhibition performance less than 6 hours after hearing she was snubbed. She was not under contract to do it, nor did she get any money. This is PURE LOVE, STRENGTH, and GUTS here folks. As I sit down to watch the ladies battle it out the next two days, I will be thinking of Mirai...my heart truly aches for her.

    • @locomadre3520
      @locomadre3520 Před 10 lety +8

      Well said! The only thing I disagree with is leaving Polina off the team...she earned her spot and Wagner should have been left off....totally trashed the credibility of figure skating as a true sport and it had been hanging by a thread as it was....Wagner's snotty attitude came through loud and clear at the team competitions and wasn't she a credit to our country..NOT!!

      If not for the reeking era of Kwan I might buy the racism angle...I am of the firm belief that the team was already chosen before Nationals...commercials made...hype in....so, this was imo more about money and pre selection....corrupt, disgusting, rotten, dirty, mean, gut wrenching but I don't think it was racist...I, too am angry and Wagner is a selfish arrogant snobby greedy and totally lacking in honor, ethics or integrity. I have been accused of racism because I loathe Kwan but she's just a Chinese American version of Ashley Wagner...cheats and liars come in every race....as do awesome courageous people like Mirai.

    Taking Wagner was a slap in the face to an athlete who worked hard and did what she needed to do to make a spot on the team. When moments are taken away as being on the Olympic team it does something to an athlete. Mirai could have brought home a medal, but Federation made 'their' decision and not the right one.

USFS is pretty close to being the Mafia....that's why Mirai didn't dare protest....how much more they could have hurt her I don't know....so wrong on every single level....hold you head high Mirai....you are loved and respected....class act all the way:)

      One thing spriinkles1000, the year of the Olympics is the end of that 4-year term! The next season is the beginning of the new one! Soooo, the body of work began in the Fall of 2012 until Nationals 2013. And, for a medal here and there and I think a silver or bronze at Nationals sometime in between, can you mention who was Mirai's coach for that season going into the Olympics? Would really appreciate if you can remind us as some of us don't remember seen one. Thanks.

    • @shellbee6735
      @shellbee6735 Před 9 lety +8

      Everyone likes to pretend that Mirai didn't get a bronze at COR less than a month or two ago as well. (I believe that Caroline Kostner and another high ranking skater placed ahead of her, when Ashley was given easier locations to medal in.) Everyone also likes to pretend that Polina's non-existent senior competition is somehow irrelevant too. But don't worry guys, Polina's TOTALLY gonna get us gold in the 2018 Olympics because we let her go to Sochi. Because putting the pressure of an entire nation on a 15 year old has always helped us in the past. (Remember how Kwan got gold at the 1994 Olympics? And how Tara Lipinski didn't shatter her hip and retire at 15? And how Kimmie Meissinger got us all those gold medals after 2006? No? Me neither.)

    • @MsJubjubbird
      @MsJubjubbird Před 9 lety +1

      There was no pressure on Polina at Sochi. Just to do her best and get experience. Which she did. And Gracie came 4th at worlds. Mirai didn't even make the team. And Ashley had a 4th at worlds and a 3rd on the GPF. Mirai didn't even make the team for one and didn't make the final for the other.

I don't see her moving. all her friends and family are in America. also I think Japan is already loaded with talent more so than the U.S. we need athletes who can put their training over all else, especially social life. look at Yuna. she has close friends but I don't think she's ever been on a date. her heart is 100% figure skating. even her mom says she never needed to force Yuna to practice. she motivates herself. but nobody would blame her if she moves after how they treated her at USFS.

      MsJubjubbird yeah you can but it might be harder on her to go back and forth. in order to be the best, she would have to breath, eat, sleep figure skating. forget about social life for now. prove to those USFS idiots that she is committed to figure skating and determined to be the best.

      No, because the Japanese field is deeper than the US in both women's and men's. Even if Mao retire's next season it'll still be harder in for her Japan than the US to fight for a spot. The only thing she can do is kick ass next season and shove it in the USFSA's faces. =\

    if I could I would place the final standing as 1. Gracie Gold 2. Mirai Nagasu
    3. Polina Edmunds. 4. Ashley Wagner. or maybe even fifth spot for Wagner who fell twice. that was such an embarrassing performance. I wish Ashley had dealt with pressure and skated better but she didn't. she choked. that's the bottom line. many may disagree but I thought Mirai had the second best free skate behind Gracie but they gave her a low score almost like to ensure Edmunds finish ahead of her so she wouldn't have to deal with the controversy. I'd be very disappointed if that was true. if they had planned to put Ashley on the ticket no matter what, they shouldn't have let her skate at Nationals and embarrassed herself like that. why don't they just do it like the Russians? top 3 finishers go to Olympics. everyone must bring your A game. end of controversy.

      Can't agree with you more! Mirai was never treated fairly! I was so disgusted by the commentators so openly wishing Mirai to make mistakes during her FS. After Mirai ended up doing a great job, they just happened to mention that the Olympics team is not certain until the next day right after Mirai's performance, but didn't mention it at all during the pairs, ice dancing, and men's competitions. I'm so happy to know that majority of the audience find it unfair.

      I like Mirai, and heart breaking as it was, I feel like the decision is fair. Basically, Gold and Ashley already earned their spots base on World and past international competitions. Gold/Ashley are the reasons why the US earned 3 spots for the Olympic. So the decision was between Polina and Mirai. They gave the spot to Polina just like they gave it to Mirai back in 2010. Sasha Cohen was the reigning Olympic medalist, but Mirai was chosen because she was the future of U.S figure Skating. Something that Mirai was not able to prove over the past many years. But she is only 20 and still have a chance to prove that.

    • @dhom100
      @dhom100 Před 10 lety +7

      trung pham thousands of people disagree with you, even those who are not fans of Mirai. traditionally top three finishers always get picked. few exceptions due to injury but never anything like this. if the decision was between Polina and Mirai, they could also use "body of work" to justify taking Mirai over Polina. but they clearly showed that they don't want Mirai. she probably embarrassed them showing up without a coach, no sponsor. I'm sure they all were convinced she was not going to skate well but she proved them wrong. I wish there were 4 spots. then there's no problem. they all deserve to go. most people just don't like the dishonesty and backroom deals. maybe USOC directors need to look at this case and see if corporate sponsors had any influence in their decision. right now, that's what it looks like.

      I dont' know all the rules, but I think only national champ is guarantee a spot to the Olympic, the rest maybe base on their international competitions' average? The japanese were doing the same thing. Back in 2010, Miki Ando was the GPF Silver Medalist,former world champ, going to national, she placed 4th but was named to the Olympic team. Had Mirai even made it to world or GPF in the past 4 years, she would had earned her spot, even if she placed lower than 3rd here.

      Figure skaters actually earn very little, highly doubt she would be able to bribe considering most skaters barely can barely cover their training costs. Ashley won 2 medal at the Grand Prix final, both times Mirai wasn't even close to qualifying. Also she hasn't qualified for Worlds in the last few years, she's just not the same skater anymore.

    The skipped Mirai at the 2014 Olympics mainly because they she's unpredictable. When she's on she's really good. But when she's bad it's really bad. I think they put Ashley on the team because of her so-called consistency hoping that she does enough to put the US on the top 10 and send 2 skaters rather than one. But Mirai is a much better skater overall in comparison to Ashley. Now, at the 2018 championships they've finally righted the wrong that was done to Mirai. Ashley's never been able to compete with the likes of Kwan and Cohen and now these younger skaters. Ashley just hangs in there and does enough hoping the BETTER skaters make enough mistakes for her to move up the ranking.

  • @noisookgia
    @noisookgia Před 10 lety +15

    I was an Asian American and a devoted Mirai fan but had to admit that she did not do good after the last Olympics where she was obviously the heiress apparent and it was Ashley Wagner's consistent good finish in the International competitions the last three years that earned the American Team three spots. So the decision is fair and square. Ashley deserves to go to this Olympic.

  • @sandyvale1038
    @sandyvale1038 Před 8 lety +3

    Ashley Wagner should be so embarrassed and ashamed of herself for not accepting her defeat and given that spot to Mirai and yes, she could have. **Body of Work** is bs.Mirai has more character and courage than little miss covergirl can even dream of and I think that her **body of work** is more impressive, in fact had it not been Canada and Joannie's mother hadn't died she would have and **should** have been on the podium in Vancouver. It seems that in order to justify their stupid ignorant vile decision that Mirai is still getting shafted and Wags is still the golden girl. Nationals lost any credibility they had left, after the mk dog and pony show it was for ages, at least as far as I'm concerned.

    • @dbulc5171
      @dbulc5171 Před 7 lety +3

      And don't forget that Mirai also deserved the US gold medal in 2010 over the awful Rachel Flatt, who under rotates most of her jumps. If they were going to call Mirai for under rotating in that competition, they most certainly should've called Rachel for the same.

    • @sandyvale1038
      @sandyvale1038 Před 7 lety +1

      I completely agree. So wrong and that Flatt girl did nothing for me in terms of grace and style. Mirai has been so robbed. I simply can't take figure skating seriously as a sport, too much room for favoritism and while I understand that subjectivity is a factor it really is abused, in my opinion. And that subjectivity and the way it is used is what makes the sport less than credible. I know this is about Mirai but I think Kim Yuna should have won in Sochi.

  • @MsJubjubbird

    If I were the olympic selector I would want Gracie, Ashley and Polina too. Gracie is the best in the country. Polina is a trainee with a big future ahead of her at only 15- the olympics would be excellent for her development and may help get her on the podium in 2018. Ashley is a warhorse with great recent international success and is the reason we have 3 spots. Mirai has no coach, hasn't produced anything amazing in the past two years, already had that new development opportunity four years ago but didn't follow it up with the expected results, in figure skating world is now too old to be a trainee and the only reason why she won is because Ashley fell rather than Mirai skating brilliantly. If Mirai had done an amazing skate and made a statement like her 2010 olympic long program I might have thought otherwise.
