(Length X width X height, divided by 231) is the formula to tell how many gallons a square or rectangular aquarium is. This won't work on aquariums with curved glass or curved acrylic.
Thanks for the vid...you're dividing the product of your total dimensions by 231 because 1 gal of water = 231 cubic inches. You're right though, it does work!
THANK YOU so much! I was told is was thought to be just over 25 from the seller. But it's a 55 gallon. Talk about a nice surprise! I bought two more koi. :)
I just got a 8x2x2 240 gl tank that I will keep about 3/4 full for my turtle. I'm using tap water so I needed to know exactly how much conditioner to add to the water. You helped big time! Thank you
I know this is like a year old, but anyone setting up a new semi-acuatic turtle tank, turtles absolutely love swimming, and no matter how big the turtle is they are naturally strong swimmers. Do not be afraid to fill your tank as high as possible leaving just enough room for a basking area or two. Res, painteds, and other basking turtles will spend upto 85% of their time in water. Dont be afraid of them drowning. They won't. The more swimming area they have the more exercise and mental stimulation they get. I have raised multiple juvenile turtles of many species up to maturity and this is one of the biggest misconceptions I hear in the hobby.
If you calculate in feet, say a 1'x1'x2' tank, then you take the product of the three numbers(cubic feet, in this case 2 cubic feet) and multiply by liquid volume per cubic feet. There are 7.48 US gallons per 1 cubic foot. G(gallons) = V(cu.feet) x 7.48(7.48g/cu.foot) so in a 1x1x2 foot tank there are 14.96 gallons. Your inch formula works! but make sure you convert to inches for it! Otherwise, use the cubic foot method! It is the scientific way!

This may sound stupid but do you measure the length and with and height from the bottom and top black trimmings? Or from glass to glass (not measuring the black trimmings)?
All About DIY yea i have my gallon for my hermit crab but i just finished watching a vid bout them and i need different ground in it but my mom is always working:(
Use the metric system: 1 cubic decimeter holds 1 liter of water. Length x width x height remove 3 ceros and that’s the liters. A 100 x 20 x 30 cm tank can hold 60, and since the average density of water is 1, then 60 liters are roughly gonna weight 60 kilos.
I agree that the metric system is much easier and makes a lot more sense. I suppose this video is for my American audience. Thanks for the metric equivalent 👍
My tank is 2 feet (2 feet x 1 feet x 1.5 feet) ? I always find my water cloudy, i'm using internal powerhead filter currently. Is this top filter is good my my size tank? If yes, which top filter do you recommend for me? Please suggest. Urgent. Thanks in advance!
That’s a loaded question really. My advice would be, get rid of the internal power head filter and go with an aqua clear 30 hang on the back filter. It will move and filter a lot more water. Next I would change 50% of the water and gravel vacuum the entire tank. Clean the glass and see where that takes you. Keep changing the water every few days after that and don’t over feed.
This formula doesn’t work exactly for bow front tanks. Because of the curve of course. But if you take those dimensions(20x18x13, divided by 231) you get about 20 gallons. Then you can probably add about 1 maybe 2 gallons to account for the curve. So you have roughly a 21 gallon bow front tank. Give or take.
Anita Peitz your welcome! Glad I could help. I just saw that it’s 13 inches at the front of the bow and then curves back to 12 inches at the corners. So your tank is probably considered a 20 gallon bow front tank. Have a nice day!
