  • The Jim McLean Years video. A must-watch for any Dundee United fan young or old. This was when Dundee United used to show the rest of Scotland and Europe how it was done.

Celtic fan but grew up at that time and used to love watching Utd in Europe. Incredible team and miss when the standard was this good across the league and we produced world class players.

As an English guy most of us normally have a favourite Scottish team, mostly Rangers or Celtic. However I've always been Dundee United, best team in Scotland comes from Dundee as well as the best Indie Band too, "The View". And this comes from an English Man

as a celtic fan of a certain age, I remember utd from the 80s, what they should have achieved, and what they did achieve is there in the books, they were a great team. Ask any young football fan in Scotland have they heard of Alex Ferguson, they know who he is and rightly so, ask them if they have heard of wee Mclean, and they have no idea, football life as in real life is about fine margins at times. Cheers Jim for your great team.

I was there at Dens Park with my Dad when United won the League Title in '83! But my favourite "United" moment was when Dave Narey hammered the ball into the Brazil goal during the '82 World Cup in Spain.
However, even as a United fan, I have to admit that Aberdeen were the most successful Scottish team in Europe in the '80s (under Alex Ferguson).
No surprise that when we had a strong domestic game (not dominated by two teams) and where teams worked to bring their schoolboys/youths through, instead of buying foreign talent, the national team was decent too...

Dundee United did brilliantly, especially in Europe in the mid 80s, but I think the pre-Bosman era and players overwhelmingly playing in their own countries meant that there was much more of a level playing field than nowadays. There was no seeding in the European club and no weighting towards the big leagues. Also as only the league champions could enter, you were more likely to face an easier side than now (ie. the winners of the Austrian or Belgian league as opposed to the 3rd or 4th place team in Spain or England. Yes United did brilliantly to get to the semi finals in 1984, but who did they have to beat to meet Roma in the semi finals? Hamrun Spartans, Standard Liege and Rapid Vienna! Not exactly teams to make you quake. Of course they did brilliantly to beat Roma at home, and the pinnacle was to beat Barcelona. But Barcelona were a shockingly poor team at the time.United had in Narey, Sturrock, Malpas et al. a group of really classy players who were loyal to the cause. The Souness revolution at Rangers ended all of that. Subsequently top players would only be loyal to the old firm teams. Eventually the top Scottish players would be moving south before they could be loyal to anyone.

@@mrkipling2201 - but all leagues- even the very top leagues like the Italian one- have peaks and troughs. Our league is no worse than the irish, Belgian, Norwegian, Croatian, Swedish, Finnish, Romanian, Bulgarian, Hungarian or danish leagues! I never understand why English people always snobbishly slag off other countries football leagues - particularly Scotland’s. We know it’s crap, but it’s not any worse than those listed above
