    People forget that West Germany reached the 1966 World Cup final only loosing in extra time and in the 1970 World Cup they reached the semi final loosing in extra time. That was before they won the 1972 European Championships and the World Cup in 1974, in the 1976 European Championship final they were loosing 0-2 to Czechoslovakia coming back to 2-2 and loosing at the penalty shoot-out to the famous Paninka chip shot !... So that shows how good they were before and after 1972 and 1974.

    Franz Beckenbauer came to Mexico around 1977 and I got his autograph. There was a long line of fans outside my school (he was in a sports shop), and he took the time to write my name, smile and look me in the eyes. Danke Kaiser!

    Gunter Netzer was one of the profound magicians of football - one of the greatest of the great of all time. Of course, he was a bit flash for Helmut Schoen, but my goodness he was a player.

    • @attk177
      @attk177 Před 4 lety +8

      One of his greatest moments was when he had a dispute with his coach Hennes Weisweiler at Mönchengladbach going into the German cup final against Köln and his last game for the club. Netzer had already an agreement with Real Madrid for the next season, which was treason in the eyes of Weisweiler. So Netzer was benched for the final and Köln scored an equalizer right before half time. Weisweiler wants to substitute Netzer for the second half but now Netzer refsuses to play. Even the other players try to encourage him to play.
      So right before extra time a player from Mönchengladbach gets injured and Günter Netzer just substitutes himself without even asking Weisweiler. With his very first touch of the ball he begins an attack, plays a onetwo and hammers the ball into the left corner of the goal, winning it for Gladbach.

      Disagree...the team of 2014 might be even better, with Neuer (the sweeper keeper), Lahm (one of the best defenders), Klose (top scorer in WC of all time and a true gentlemen in football), Schweinsteiger aso. And those are just some of the names we already recognize as great players, some of them still have a great career in front of them. Plus, the bench was never so deep. The 1972 team would have most likely had problems if they had lost as many players for the same position as the team did in 2014.

    Definitely one of the greatest national teams to play football. However, the team clearly threw the game against East Germany to avoid playing Holland, Brazil and Argentina in the other group. Another interesting fact is that Breitner took the penalty in 1974 final because he said "there were no penalty takers on that team". It's interesting because Germany, after losing the next Euro Championship to the Czechoslovakia two years later on penalty kicks, went on to become the deadliest team on PK shootouts where they have not lost a PK shootout since both in WC and Euro championships, and they have been involved in about 7 or 8 shootouts since 1976. Now, if you play Germany in extra time, you better win before PKs, or the game is over.

    Everyone always leaves out the fact that in the second half, despite Holland's dominance, it was Gerd Müller who scored another goal. It was not given due to offside, but that was not correct. He was VERY clearly onside, not even close. Like they said in the beginning of the video: always at the right place at the right time. But hey, in the end it doesn't really matter...

    • @MrDekkert
      @MrDekkert Před 8 lety +11

      The 2:1 was in the first half.
      There was no dutch dominance in the second half, if you study the videos. It was even. With another foul on Hölzenbein, which not got the deserved penalty, and a goal of Müller, not given because upside, wrong again. So it could have been 4:1.

    • @henrydupont9181

      Really strange to say that there was 'no Dutch dominance' in the second half when West German player who actually played in that final say that the Dutch laid siege on the West German goal. In fact at least one of them said that they got a lucky goal - Muller's. No the Dutch lost due to complacency and unlucky finishing by Rep, Neeskens and co. Mind you West Germany were a great team but the Dutch were better.

      It depends what one values in a striker for their team.
      Muller was better than Van Basten and Ronaldo in the box.
