Synths are what got me interested in pedals in the first place. Overdrives and reverbs always sounded like "something the amp did", but the thought of pressing a pedal and suddenly you're playing a different instrument, always fascinated me. Thank you for the episode!
I own 3 Meris pedals and though the initial learning curve might be a bit steep they're incredibly musical and forward-thinking. They sound fantastic too.
Agreed - and though the alt function settings are a little tricky it does a good job of being tweakable without midi but then fully programmable with midi. Only disappointed they didn’t dive into the Dry Mode on the Enzo - it’s a sleeper!
Meris is awesome but crazy annoying. In fact so infuriating it's a waste of time, presets is another pedal, plus 100€... The scammiest tactics do not get my recommendation. Meris could be amazing, but practical/functional design is a disaster.
The SY-1 is fantastic with its 121 possibilities, compact size, and flawless tracking, but the Enzo... SO much under the hood that can be used in a variety of ways. Chorus, Delay, Filter, Arpeggiator, Octave, Fuzz... AND midi preset capabilities!
It's so great to see Meris' Enzo discussed. Hell, it's great to see this category discussed and thanks guys for doing so. If viewers are looking for proper demos of what synth pedals, and especially those by Meris can do - which is a hell of a lot! - you will need to look elsewhere. Yes, the learning curve is steep. But once the basics are mastered there is nothing like it. These pedals take you places you have never been and will not want to return from once you're there. e.g., Guitarists like Ed O'Brien, Kevin Parker, Andy Othling et al live for these types of sounds. Btw, The Enzo can be controlled wirelessly via Bluetooth MIDI. As Mick notes Enzo can be used with anything - keyboards, vocals, bass, etc.
The Swarm has me totally inspired, gotta say. Will get one. I have the AM Envelope Filter and man, it's easily the best Filter pedal I've ever ever played. So many uses (lead searing sound, up and down, subtle, in your face but never sounds bad). Just is so awesome, Mike made his masterpiece in that one, but not a ton of people have noticed
I finally plugged in my SY-1 (had been busy), and I'm absolutely blown away. I've had various pickup-based guitar synths and honestly they were all crap. I've always loved the idea, but it just never pans out. I'm really into modular synthesis, but this is just fun. The articulation and tracking on it is absolutely flawless. I can't believe how good it is. Sure; the sounds are limited, but that's ok. It's also so simple and small. I'm a fan.
It's finally time for the best moment of the best day of the week ! Yaayy Thanks to you guys, I decided to finally get a tube amp and some pedals (TC Flashback 2, Digitech Nautila and Maxon OD-9). So much fun. Having a Nice sound is so inspiring, you are right. Keep up the videos !! Awesome work, love you guys.
Such a good episode. As one of those annoying multi-instrumentalist types, I've always used keys for my synth sounds, though I do like using pedals to get some weirdness going. Not sure I will go down this route, but again, your show has inspired me to experiment further. I always remember an interview with Tony Banks saying he was constantly trying to make his keys more guitar like, and Steve was always trying to make his guitar more synth like. The extent to which this worked is such that I confused the two, particularly on Return of the Giant Hogweed. Keep on keeping on, you are often the reason I pick up a guitar to try something new.
One little tip. If you use a pedal with horrendous frequency spectrum, try to add mid focused overdrive AFTER that pedal. It works beautifully and concentrate your sound in the place of guitar
Much love to you Gents for giving it a go. Considerably less love for that batch of pedals. I had to turn on the Rattler and play Soundgarden riffs for an hour just to make my ears stop itching. 😉
You realize you have just made it to #1 on Future Music's 10 most wanted list. Send them a coffee mug as a peace offering. I want to see you both alive for next weeks episode. :D
So if I can ever get a D&M drive, I may have to get a second case made with special graphics and call it the Ocelots & Elephants. What a great show!! I don't know enough about synth stuff, mainly because I haven't taken the plunge into MIDI. Some of these pedals seem approachable, though. Especially the Swarm. I think a really killer fuzz sound that is controllable and plays well with other pedals could be dialed in, not to mention all of the other tones available. Feed that Greer into it and dial it in! Finally, I was streaming this episode on my good stereo system. When you kicked in the Analogman filter, it nearly took my head off!
I think the BeeTronics Swarm is officially the first pedal I’ve purchased before I saw it on your show...then this came video came out. I know I’m doing something right.
I saw a super fun vid on reddit, someone was demoing their pedalboard with pigtronix motherboard 2 and sy-1, really cool sounds, played some Miley. This SY-1 is amazing and I can't understand how I didn't realize it back when I watched this video. SO MUCH potential for experimentations. So many cool sounds. Even that 80's synth that could be in Arnold's iron pumping vid. Or his action movies.
How can there be people who watch you guys who DON"t like this! What the flipping flip! I love you both and can't imagine where I would be w/o this show - and your whole deal!!!! The most amazing thing is how Mick went from skeptical to total embracing of this fascinating musical thing. That all of us could experience that level of change under the influence of a moment's revelation. Who cares about pedals and if you ever actually use this! Them moment of "ah ha" is worth everything. Surely this is the gift of getting to be conscious. Most honorable mentions: Pat Methany, Adrienne Belew and 80's King Crimson -- and if Rush had these in the early 80's. . .
A subject close to my soul. PSA: The GK-1 was the first Roland add-on hex pickup module. I would love to help on the next one. I’ll bring my GR-300 rig. Full on Fripp/Metheny/Summers vibe. It’s what every synth pedal aspires to be.
Playing a guitar feels more expressive than playing a keyboard, and it allows one to move freely without playing a keytar and looking like a goofball. I foresee the synth pedal market continuing to grow. Fun episode, thanks!
Maybe basis for a second episode where you put on some fx pedals after the synths? These sounds really comes to life with the Strymons, Boss or other multi fx pedals, and thats where it starts to get inspiring.
Dan, I'd like to relate an experience I had a few days ago. I was working on finding my own "cheat code" for intervals, a la your second practice vlog, and had gotten to the fourth. After playing one-four several times, I recognized a melody, but couldn't place it. For the first time in my life, I played a melody full through without having to think about it, and I was half way through it before I realized what it was. It was Taps, and through my tears the final note was the best, truest note I have ever played in my life. That happened the evening of September 11. Your brief but on point tutelage played a large part in that simple yet deeply moving experience, and I would like to thank you dearly.
Cool episode. Funny how the episodes I least expect to like I like the most, and the ones I get super stoked for I like the least. Thanks guys for another solid hour!
I saw the title to this, and could almost guess what Mick's delivery would be. As always, you guys never disappoint. Personally, I'll keep my synth chops for my Moogg SubPhatty, but it's cool to see how devices in this area are developing. Thanks as ever Gents.
SWARM - I can definitely hear Brian May playing this for a Queen song. OR Adrian Belew, but then he plays all kinds of weird things! Two different styles to embrace the SWARM.
The SY-1 can do SO MUCH!!...and you barely scratched the surface!!...the only thing missing, is the possibility to store PRESETS!!...how come they don't include that on those pedals?...
Dan & Mick, if you’re not already aware of his channel, you must check out Stefan at The Pedal Zone, his demos of Meris pedals, and various “how to get synth tones” videos are about as good as it gets on here, can’t recommend enough
In the 80's I taught myself basic keyboard and taught others to program analog synths. MIDI came out in 83.I bought one of the first midi synths and Roland's MP401 to hook my synths into a sequencing program thru an IBM PC. (the PC only became available in Nov. 82) I retired my guitar at that same time. I was working for Ibanez as their product specialist. At the time they were loosing money and actually thought it was possible keyboard Synths were looking to replace guitars. No kidding guys ...I was there! The BOSS is the real deal! There is not the time or space to explain ...but it's competitors are NOT in the same league.
@@adamskold6395 What makes the big difference is that the Boss changes your guitar signal to voltage and the others simply put filters on the actual guitar signal. Or think of it this way others are very much more wah-wah then synth and the Boss changes the signal into a plastic keys on a keyboard. In theory with the Boss method they cold make a box so you could plugging into one of those giant Moogs with a hundred chords patching in and out of filters etc.
I am biased but I love the Enzo and I actually have the Infinite Jets as well as the Enzo. Great video guys, I learned a whole hell of a lot....Thank You Guys!

I don't normally add comments like "where's such and such a pedal", so I won't. I will say that the most perplexed people watching this must be the folks at EHX!
@@shckltnebay Yeah. most of them aren't, but I'd say that the Synth9 and Mel9 kind of fall into that category of synth/synth emulation. The C4 from source audio has full on modular synthesis, if you use the phone/computer editor though. I'm really intrigued by that one.
You guys often talk about pedals/sounds taking you away on a journey of inspiration, I bought the Meris Enzo earlier this year for just that reason. It's a very inspiring pedal that takes me out of my comfort zone. Vangelis and Synthwave sounds ooze from this lovely device.
Even though I would like keyboard players to play their own parts, I understand occasional parts played by guitar through pedals. I can't wait to watch this video. :-)
Man, I wish I could read Mick's thoughts during the intro. On topic, I saw Jennifer Batten during a demo for a new product from Fishman, guitar synth midi thing. It was amazing to hear her play a sax, piano, harmonica, strings over famous backing tracks and I could hardly hear the difference with the original track. And honk to Jennifer for signing my strat.
Ok I’m catching up on oldies here, but as an aside, Moog themselves also made a guitar/synth pedal, called the Freqbox. It is an unruly beast that perplexes everyone at first, bc Moog made such excellent clean sounding synths and all the awesome moogerfooger effects, but then there’s this Freqbox thing, that’s just a wall of heavy fuzz-like distortion with an autowah and crazy high frequency caterwauling, which just goes berserk as soon as you touch it. Guitar works best through the sine/triangle wave & minimal autowah settings, where it sounds great. The range of distortion settings are more useful when playing a subtractive moog synth through it, to add more fuzzy frequencies to your output for further filtering sweeps & phasing & whatnot. …good rule of thumb with other synth pedals too.
I had to watch this for the Beetronics Swarm, I love that pedal and I wanted to see what you guys thought of it. I don't need much in life but I NEED one of those!
Love the new studio look fellas! With all the gear set up like that I don't feel so bad about my music room anymore. Haha! In fact, I think I need more gear. Just don't tell my wife...
Love your channel. Just to add, "ocelot" is for ocelotl, nahualt word for "tiger", so it was the translation given for the frailes in actual México, for a european dictionary in 1579. Saludos de Ciudad de México.
Just as I was getting curious about guitar synths, you guys put this out - perfect timing, and an awesome demonstration! The possibilities seem really wide-ranging and inspiring.
When you displayed how the first one isn't polyphonic I really would expect to hear the following comments from you two: "It's not a BAD sound." "no, no it is definitely A sound." 'Perhaps not a very useful sound unless you're [x]" "Interesting though." "Moving on." I actually enjoyed the glitched chord haha
Wow, what an episode. The combo of the Beetronics Swarm and the AnalogMan Envelope Filter was magical. What an amazing sound! The synth chords on the Digitech under ballad lyrics, awesome. 27:57 Dan “a voltage controlled oscillator” Mick “Oh I see…” 😏 And the crowning jewel of this episode, “Stop manipulating me.” 😂🤣
bought a EHX Synth9 on a lark for something different...and weirdly i use it alot...love that thing...the Swarm has been at the top of my next pedal list for a while now..
I’m in hospital at the moment waiting for some rather unpleasant business. THANK YOU for this episode. Didn’t think I would be laughing out loud today. So appreciated and a great episode. To chip in a little for us 4 stringed friends. 1 - I have the AMAN envelope and is works incredible for bass and using the filter from a octave pedal gives amazing bass synth sounds. Also a big shout for Electro Harmonix Micro Bass Synth - an amazing analogue bass synth.
I think you need to check out the Source Audio C4. It's basically a cutting-edge modular synth in a stomp box... And from the demos I've heard, it's pretty amazing.
Man, the Meris stuff is really really interesting. Love that you guys tackled this. And I love that A-man Envelope filter. Man o man, gotta get one of those!
Whenever I see new synth pedals, I want them so bad.. I own the enzo, which is really good pedal but still wanting sy-1, infinite jets and so on 😭😭 Thanks for the synth pedal video!
Toska used synth sounds coming both from Moogs and bass effects as I recall while bolding guitar melodies, overdubing etc. It worked out great (Fire By The Silos album, watch 'The making of'). So, synths are great studio tool even if you do not use them live or compose with them. They add such a texture. By the way, that Meris Enzo is one of the most interesting pedals I've heard in a long time..it is like ultimate, original mod-synth-crush pedal, very inspiring even trough simple desktop speakers. Very impressed. Great show

@@JeremyKolassa aimt that the truth ...
Holy shit that Beetronics pedal. God damn!!
You should try the Source Audio C4.
this! how could you dismiss the source audio C4?! This pedal is THE state-of-the-art of synth pedals right now.
Do Noise I got in deep with that in their beta stage. It’s INCREDIBLE.
I was thinking they must have filmed this before it came out? Mad not to have the C4
As a fellow cat fan myself, I enjoyed Mick taking a moment to highlight the majestic Ocelot. Haha, fun show mates! Cheers from Michigan!
Just as I was getting curious about guitar synths, you guys put this out - perfect timing, and an awesome demonstration! The possibilities seem really wide-ranging and inspiring.
Can we get that ocelot on a t-shirt with “stop manipulating me”?
I really like pedals that deliver "fuzz on the verge of synth" sound.
The ehx microsynth is much more of a fuzz than an actual guitar synth, great example of that sort of thing
When you displayed how the first one isn't polyphonic I really would expect to hear the following comments from you two: "It's not a BAD sound." "no, no it is definitely A sound." 'Perhaps not a very useful sound unless you're [x]" "Interesting though." "Moving on."
I actually enjoyed the glitched chord haha
Wow, what an episode.
The combo of the Beetronics Swarm and the AnalogMan Envelope Filter was magical. What an amazing sound!
The synth chords on the Digitech under ballad lyrics, awesome.
27:57 Dan “a voltage controlled oscillator”
Mick “Oh I see…” 😏
And the crowning jewel of this episode, “Stop manipulating me.” 😂🤣
bought a EHX Synth9 on a lark for something different...and weirdly i use it alot...love that thing...the Swarm has been at the top of my next pedal list for a while now..
I've got EHX C9 and just last week I got a used 'Dirty Robot' by Digitech which is very much like the 'Synth Wah' great fun and can be very useful.
Digitech all day... love how I get excited at the first pedal... and on it goes.
Dan, "...... manipulating oscillators..."
Wow, very saucy!
All the best Mark!
Honestly the SY-1 was impressive and seemed genuinely useful in a band
I mean the bee thing was rad but stuck me more as a weird fuzz than a synthy synth
I own the enzo, which is really good pedal but still wanting sy-1, infinite jets and so on 😭😭
Thanks for the synth pedal video!
the digitech synth wah sound reminds me of the sound from Daft Punks "Human after all"
I'm always hyped to see some Meris on this show! The more, the *Mer-ier*! ;D
Nice. Meriser?
@@ThatPedalShow Merisier?
Never afraid to get Merisier
That Enzo is Boards Of Canada in a box.
these are absolutely your best digressions ever
Toska used synth sounds coming both from Moogs and bass effects as I recall while bolding guitar melodies, overdubing etc. It worked out great (Fire By The Silos album, watch 'The making of'). So, synths are great studio tool even if you do not use them live or compose with them. They add such a texture. By the way, that Meris Enzo is one of the most interesting pedals I've heard in a long time..it is like ultimate, original mod-synth-crush pedal, very inspiring even trough simple desktop speakers. Very impressed. Great show
I like that they didn't bother to say what amps they were using today...Because it really doesn't seem to matter!
