Excellent contest, I don't have any ideas at the moment, but if I think of something, I will for sure join in on the fun.
Nice! I just saw this video. Thanks for doing the contest, Ed. I always missed the previous ones and it will be fun to design and build a WTF plane. Your max lift plane is a very cool idea. I hope it works well, flight vid please!
RC meets advanced fluid dynamics can only be a good thing. Looking forward to some wacky and brilliant results.
Cracked up when I saw the 'All Purpose Buckets' being used to hold a plane up !
Yep, that qualifies.
Getting one of those in the air would be another idea for a WTF Plane.
As always a great video . But I have enough trouble getting standard designs to fly .This is the BEST site for learning how to scratch build with foamboard.
You really got my attention with the Coandă effect, your approach looks promising.
awesome Ed, can't wait to see you again it Flite Fest
You have the best channel. Wish to see new videos!
I'm curious to see how that last plane flies, the one with the boundary layer control.
2:14 source of the electric power can come from anything?
I'm going to put a nitro engine with AC generator plus rectifier and charger into it. A small battery to buffer. Throttle control of the nitro engine will be automatic and based on battery state of charge. Flight control of the electric motor(s) will be by pilot and ESC, as normal.
Full disclosure: Not gonna do it, I don't actually fly anymore and hate the sound of high-revving nitro engines anyway. I was thinking of using a lowish-rev regular fuel engine to get more run time out of radio control earth movers in the above-described way. But haven't found anything suitable yet. Basically, if it sounds okay, it's too large. :-/
Sounds pretty cool. I might modify a design I have been sketching simply called the boat plane so it can use the required parts.
I'am looking forward to see what type craft folks will come up with.(This morning I started taking scrap from some of my builds to see if I could Make something out it that would fly ,well see what happens )You inspire me Ed.
+Dan Ogle Going into this with a FrankenPlane mindset is probably a great advantage.
+Dan Ogle....I gotta say, Dan...I've been a huge fan of Ed and his EA methods. Based on the previous contests that Ed has offered, I can assure you that there will be some interesting new models in the near future.
Very imaginative as you most often are.
One technical point I would like to bring to your attention, however. To obtain the desired Coanda Effect for the model shown you are going to have to modify your flap/aileron hinge design. The single point hinge on your prototype will cause upper surface flow separation. The needed shape to achieve the laminar flow for Coanda Effect is a smooth radius upper surface. Hard to do on a small model, especially using your building methods. Also, it will be interesting how this principal will work at the low Reynolds Numbers involved.
+Ted Hammond That is absolutely true. I expect the airflow to mostly depart from the surface at the flap hinge. But with low Reynolds number to my advantage I believe it will work better than in a scale craft. I may try adding a diverting member over the length of the flap hinge, to deploy as the flaps are engaged.
Darn it, I had a plane perfect for this contest half way built from your last contest, but I've moved and left it behind. Rats! Not to mention new FAA regs. have put a hold on all my projects :-(
this should be pretty good,I cant make FliteFest but hopefully I'll have a entry
May want to consider increasing the hole diameter as you go further down the wing. Pressure will decrease as you get further out.
Edit: Pressure will decrease, but the fix may not be bigger holes, as that will slow the airflow coming out of them, and this concept relies on the flow velocity. The best way would be to leave the holes alone, and reduce internal volume of the forward wing section duct, as you go from the fuselage to the wing tip.
miss u so much
will there be another contest this year
I am in! That radio looks awesome!
I also just want to let you know that for a lot of people wtf has another meaning that is not appropriate here.
I m not trying to be a hater and I love the channel, but I just wanted to give you the heads up.
Colin
+Crash and Burn RC I am aware. People can take it either way they want.
Hey, Ed ! I've been experimenting with the KfM airfoils and have come up with a badass design I'd love to enter in this contest. it does include a folded foamboard fuselage, although it is far different from anything you've built. The wing is based on the Armin wing design, but I've morphed it in to a KfM airfoil. Can I still participate in this contest with this airfoil?
I was going to put a saito 40 on the back of an Ansley peace drone I would like to see a nitro foamie in this contest. My plans also include a .25 nitro ducted fan f4 phantom.
Entering!
Is the contest still going. I have a really silly idea that should fly like a bat outta Dante's Inferno.
Ed... Are you sure you know what "WTF" on the internet actually means...
Maybe mixing up the letters might change the first impressions unless that's what you were going for ;-)
BTW... sounds like a great contest. Can't wait to see all the entries.
+lasersbee I do.
Anyone know a supplier of lead covered foamboard? I'm going for the nuclear reactor powered approach. Lipos are so yesterday.
+28th St. Air Land & Sea I think you would earn a Nobel prize and 20 years in the federal pen on the same day if you pulled that off.
I have to agree with Ed but maybe Kapton tape would help some lol
Use this instead of packing tape. www.mcmaster.com/#lead-foil-tape/=13gyi57
Lol
I'm in ;)
do you watch formula 1 .? what you are trying is similar to an s-duct
Hey the second plane you shows has an insane wing profile !!! I love It !!!
Is it your own idea or someone already did it ?
Did you simulate it with a professional tool like Solidworks Flow ?
oh god, i forgot about this.... welp, maybe next year.
Hi Ed great channel, and I look forward to participating in the scratch build contest! Do you have any general design rules-of-thumb or can you point us in the right direction to: 1. determine the right CG, 2. calculate the stabilizer sizes 3. picking which airfoil cord size/control surface size, 4. understanding lift created by wing sizes, 5. picking the right power plant (I use www.ecalc.ch/ for quads) - maybe a general design video series would be a good complement to the ExperimentalAirlines channel
I think this will be interesting.
Is it okay if I do a micro plane? i can't afford enough parts for anything larger than a foot, but hopefully if I win the transmitter it will cut down the cost for a fullsize and I can stretch for enough money for other parts
+Luke Gibson No size limitation at all. Just be creative.
Are you allowed to use 1 section of armin wing but cut in half to make a backward sweeping wing?
+Rc Aviation Not just allowed but encouraged! Use as much imagination as possible.
Thanks:)
+ExperimentalAirlines Are we allowed to use more of a Flite Test style wing design with creased sections when folding over or do we have to use the Armin wing construction method? Do we need to cover the foam sections with tape like you normally do or can we leave them just bare paper? Great contest idea!
i ll sponsor a build
I will be wonder what happened to this guy.
At first, I thought this was an April Fool's prank.
Have Josh from FT be a judge.
Get Peter, he has more experience doing experiments
True
well i have the best design..ive told you it..but its classified haaha
Is this an april fools joke? jk :)
