Magicshine RN 3000 Bike Front Headlight Review - feat. 3000 Lumen + Dual LEDs + Garmin Mount

  • If there is one thing you can count on from advancements in Lithium ion and LED technology is it brings down the cost of batteries and increases light output. Case in point, the new $159.99 Magicshine RN3000 bike front headlight which is the topic of this review. As the product name hints, the RN 3000 is capable of an impressive 3000 lumen output. Although that isn’t the brightest light Magicshine offers (the 8000 lumen Monteer 8000S takes that title), it’s the brightest all-in-one light Magicshine has offered to date. The RN 3000 is able to achieve that output thanks to a 10,000 mAh battery capacity from two integrated 21700 Li-ion cells. Dual Luminus LEDs provide a uniform and wide beam for road cycling and off-road use. Modern touches such as USB Type-C charging, powerbank functionality, and quarter-turn Garmin style mount help offset the premium price of the light.
    As with most of Magicshine’s recent front lights, the RN 3000 utilizes a universal Garmin quarter turn style mount. The simple design utilizes a circular base with two tabs to securely mount on a variety of available accessories on the market. It’s a secure mount style that works on or off-road and a big improvement over proprietary mounts other companies use. The RN 3000 also includes a simple handlebar mount with multiple strap lengths to accommodate aero bars and different diameter round bars. It’s the same mount that comes with the Monteer and MJ-900 series of lights that requires an allen wrench to install. We highly recommend using an out-front mount such as the Magicshine TTA or other Garmin compatible mounts on the market instead of the included mount to place the light directly in front of your handlebars.
    We were quite surprised by the size of the RN 3000 when we first took it out of the box. Also, wfile videos and or photos of the light make it look visually identical to the Allty or RN 1200 lights with its black rectangular profile, rounded corners, and aluminium housing, in person, the RN 3000 is quite large so as to house the high-capacity 21700 Li-on batteries. The 10,000 mAh battery capacity is on par with the MJ-6118 battery pack that comes with the 4500 lumen MJ-906S wired light. Thanks to the all-in-one commuter style design of the RN 3000, you don’t have to worry about mounting bulky battery packs on your bike. Recharging the light is also easy with the rear mounted USB Type-C port that can also be used to recharge other devices.

    @12:10 confusion clarified below:
    The RN3000 light has two 21700 3.6V 5Ah cells in parallell = 3.6V * 10Ah = 36Wh.
    The Battery Pack house exactly the same 21700 cells, but four of them and in parallell/series = 7.2V * 10Ah = 72Wh = twice the capacity.

    So, I have RN1500 and I'm maybe looking for a RN3000 or 906s.
    RN1500 is great for rides up to 4 hours if you have some street illumination where you can use low or mid settings. Riding in highways or off-road, in complete darkness, at least here in Brazil, demanded the full 1500 lumen settings, and so a short usage time.
    So for my next bikepacking travel, I'll buy an powerfull light.

  • @Blacklighting
    @Blacklighting Před 2 lety +3

    You should try and get some Nitecore bike lights to review. BR25 seems to be the perfect commute/road safe light as it has a beam cut off and it shines light back at the rider. You can see the rider coming towards you and not just a bright spot light with a black background.

    • @BlairAir
      @BlairAir Před 2 měsíci

      Yes, but Nitecore are just about the ugliest, mixed bag of styling queues all drawn from 1950 sci-fi flicks. When I want a light to look like Captain Silversheilds Death Ray Gun, I'll go directly to their website 😂

    • @TheSweetCyclists
      @TheSweetCyclists  Před 8 měsíci

      I would say the RN 1500 and RN 3000 are for different types of riders. The 3000 lumen RN 3000 is quite a bit bright and great if you spend more time in the dark while the RN 1500 is a bit more commuter friendly and has the fun colors. They have nearly the same features though with similar mounting and user interfaces. If you're doing more riding on bike trails I would also suggest the Magicshine EVO 1700 which has a beam cutoff.

  • @twosix_00

    Taking into account that there is only a 10 dollar difference between this model and the Ray2600, which one do you think is a better option? Is the light sensor or higher battery capacity preferable? What should be more important?

    • @TheSweetCyclists
      @TheSweetCyclists  Před 2 lety +1

      Good question - I think it comes down to runtime vs. smart features. If you spend more time cycling on the road or commuting then the Ray 2600 is the better choice (better beam + easier to use interface + smart sensor). If you do trail riding or gravel riding the bigger battery of the RN 3000 is a better option.

      @TheSweetCyclists  Před rokem

      @@JitinMisra It depends on the type of rides you do. As you can see, the RN3000 has a bigger battery so if you need more runtime you can run it at half power for longer than the RN 1500. It is quite a bit more expensive though.

    • @TheSweetCyclists
      @TheSweetCyclists  Před 2 lety +3

      Personally I would go with the Ray 2600 - it has an auto day/night mode thanks to the light sensor so you can just leave it in the smart mode. The Allty 2000 is a good option if you want the OLED display which shows actual remaining runtime which is very handy. The Ray 2600 and RN 3000 both just have 3 level battery status indicators which aren't as informative as a screen.

      I think the Ray 2600 in the low beam mode might be a little more friendly for oncoming traffic with it's multiple diffusers on the lens. The Ray 2600 also has a simpler flash mode selection which I prefer over the RN 3000.

      @TheSweetCyclists  Před 2 lety +1

      I'd lean toward the MJ-906 / Monteer 3500S lights if you're doing bike packing as they have an external wired battery pack. That means you can carry a second battery if you plan to do very long rides or re-use the battery packs to charge your other devices. The 3500S has a wider 5-LED lens that might be better for off-roading.

    It's bright and the battery lasts a while but the light is too heavy for the mount. Mine sheared off on the second ride (on smooth roads, not even anything rough!). Customer service from magicshine is very poor. They are refusing to honour the warranty and have been quite unhelpful really.
